What are you doing for Christmas this week?

Disclaimer - yes I know it’s early, but this is the Christmas Board.

Over the years I’ve worked out a 12 week plan for myself so I can get it all done a little bit at a time. Last week was for reading back over my notes, starting my lists, putting aside money for gift cards (I don’t buy them until December but I put the cash in a card now), and dropping off a bag of unwanted Halloween bits from last year to the charity shop.

This week I have to have the who’s going where conversation so I can get stuck into menu planning. We typically host or visit one set of parents, and then have another family get together on each side too. I need those dates on the calendar so the teens can fit their much more exciting social lives around them.

What will you do for Christmas this week?

Unintentional Christmas prep here!
Both kids chose gig tickets so that’s one present each sorted.
I’ve made and frozen FIL’s favourite ginger pudding for Christmas. Plus a massive batch of Yorkshires and roast veg.
I may make some Christmas puddins although I fear I’ve left it a bit late.

Already adding to a presents to buy list & have got a few decorations ideas from where I work (we sell great Christmas stuff). Might book the panto ( oh no I won’t!). Want to look at snow globes in TK Maxx as they had some beautiful ones last year.

TheSandgroper · 05/10/2025 15:30

Bought DD’s gift last week. Am working on Df’s. I stood in my pantry today with pen and paper checking stuff out.

AuntieDen · 05/10/2025 15:38

I went IRL shopping in town, which I try not to do nearer Christmas as I hate crowds. Failed to get a lot of stuff I wanted but did manage to get a couple of bits and raided M&S for hamper goodies, so I have been able to gauge how much more filler stuff i need for them.

have started stacking stuff in boxes, and even wrapped one batch so its al ready to go.

i know it sounds early but our first family Christmas is beginning of December and we only have three weekends without plans now before actual Christmas so its going to get busy scarily fast :(

I'm trying out a new roast potato method with today's Sunday lunch. Obviously it would be insanity to leave it to the actual day so I'm testing it now and my husband is very happy to be a guinea pig.

Hiya, it’s like this Parkin recipe:

https://traditionalhomebaking.com/yorkshire-parkin/

You can adjust it to work without oats if you prefer a more ‘cakey’ texture. Sometimes I add a small amount of chopped crystallised ginger stirred through(my mum’s tip is to always use a small knob of lard in this recipe!!).

Served with a sticky toffee ginger sauce which is:

175g muscovado sugar
50g butter( I use salted, probably shouldn’t!)
225ml double cream.
1 tablespoon black treacle
Ground ginger

Melt sugar and butter with half the cream over a low to medium heat till all the sugar has dissolved.
Stir in the black treacle and the rest of the cream, add ground ginger to taste, and once it’s all combined, take it off the heat straight away.

I freeze or serve both separately but you could just pour the sauce straight into the cake tin.

Old Fashioned Yorkshire Parkin

This sticky old fashioned Yorkshire Parkin recipe contains oatmeal. It keeps really well and improves with time. Therefore, it can be made a couple of days before it's needed.

Let us know the method if it’s a success please?!

This week I'm going to be doing some Christmas shopping for presents,I've already got a list and some things chosen but I'll still have loads to do.

I'm desperately trying to make sure that I've got everything done by the first week of December this year so I can sit back and relax for a bit before Christmas day.

tinytemper66 · 05/10/2025 16:06

Bought some ingredients for our Christmas cake

Oldraver · 05/10/2025 16:08

I've bought a Christmas ornament some coasters for a friend and a wooden Christmas tree thing

MrsWhites · 05/10/2025 16:09

This week I have booked Lapland UK, planned a Christmas market trip with friends to York and I will be making a spiced apple chutney for family and friends hamper gifts.

DurhamDurham · 05/10/2025 16:10

Ordered three Look Fantastic beauty advent calendars for my two daughters and DIL.
Agreed who was hosting on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. I’m neither so that’s worked out well for me Smile

Pineapples123 · 05/10/2025 16:24

I’ve made my first batch of chutneys to put in Christmas hamper gifts- fig and candied orange, and a chilli jam. I’ve ordered a book to (hopefully) make some chocolates for the first time, and have also tested out a lino print to put in the hampers too.
I’ve unintentionally given myself a week off so might go into the city one day to do some shopping too.

Openmouthinsertfood · 05/10/2025 16:26

Put the decorations and tree up. 😊I couldn't wait any longer and I love the decorations and tree and want to enjoy them as much as possible. Last year I waited till November and it just seemed to whizz by too quickly, so I'm getting in early this year. 😁🎄🎁I've even wrapped all the presents I have so far and have put them under the tree.

CheeseWisely · 05/10/2025 16:27

I bought a couple of things for DS last week including an advent calendar, and have booked 2 Christmas events for us today. We don’t host and DS will only be 18 months so not masses to do!

AtLeastGo · 05/10/2025 16:31

Some reassurance, genuinely, for you.

Nothing.

Christmas still happens in our house without months of prep. Don't worry.

ComfortFoodCafe · 05/10/2025 16:32

Im near enough done, just need £150 for playstation vouchers for dc now. 🙄

YorkieTheRabbit · 05/10/2025 16:39

Allthings · 05/10/2025 17:24

Retiredearly61 · 05/10/2025 17:33

Gunna start shopping for Xmas stocking stuff later this week. Everyone is getting money for main presents so they can buy whatever they want.

luckylavender · 05/10/2025 18:07

I already have my lists sorted. And I have a couple of presents that I have left in my present bag. This week I bought the first presents. A local photography studio makes a local calendar, so I bought 3, one for me & 2 presents.
