Is it too early? I want to try a few new recipes this year so share your favourites with me please!!

I’ll start with the pie I make with Christmas leftovers:

I would say don’t bother making it. I did it one year and it was horrible. No one liked it and they are not fussy eaters especially where a Christmas dinner is concerned. It sounded nice in theory, in reality very different.

God we love it, it's fab in a sarnie with leftovers the next day or with cheese!

Can I ask a possibly stupid question wrt Nigellas Gingerbread Stuffing. I plan to make it today and freeze it. Looking at the recipe it says to make stuffing with the eggs and pepper and freeze. Does this mean it is cooked first and then frozen or frozen uncooked?

I puzzled over this too. I don’t suppose it makes much difference but I’d assume freeze before the cooking stage as it’s going to be reheated from frozen anyway.

SisterMaryLuke · 06/12/2025 09:01

prelovedusername thankyou. I was leaning more to cooking it first, then reheating once thawed, so I'm still not certain. I might go back to regular xmas stuffing as I know what I'm doing with that. However, that would leave me with 4 ginger cakes to deal with!

SisterMaryLuke · 06/12/2025 18:27

For anyone remotely interested - I asked on the Nigella website and they confirmed to freeze the stuffing before cooking. Hope this is helpful.

prelovedusername · 07/12/2025 07:05

Has anyone got a nice veggie sprout recipe? I usually steam ours and they are nice but a bit - boring. I don’t want or lose the lovely bright colour. If it helps, I have about five pouches of chestnuts I bought cheap last year and will still be useable.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/12/2025 17:18

I honestly think that sprouts are the best just lightly boiled, with chestnuts. Maybe a bit of butter - but there is so much rich food on the table at Christmas, I think it needs something fresh and simple.

BangingOn · 07/12/2025 21:12

I cook sprouts in the air fryer with a little bit of garlic and some balsamic glaze. It would work with chestnuts added too. The acidity and crunch works well with the richness of the rest of the dinner.

prelovedusername · 08/12/2025 20:07

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I kind of agree, I love sprouts as they are, seems a shame to mess with them. On the other hand I felt the same about broccoli till I was introduced to oven toasted broccoli with pine nuts, garlic and lemon juice so I’m very open to @BangingOn’s recipe.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/12/2025 20:36

That broccoli recipe sounds amazing, @prelovedusername!

That broccoli recipe sounds amazing, @prelovedusername!

I’m not even sure it’s a recipe @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius, DD knocked it up so there won’t be measurements!

Great thread!

IHeartKingThistle · 09/12/2025 14:44

Lisa Faulkner’s piccalilli. Nigella’s ham in coke.

And DH’s Boxing Day fry up with sprout bubble and squeak…. better than Christmas dinner!

HelloSkeletonFace3 · 09/12/2025 15:14

Gorgeous thread, wish I'd read it a few weeks ago!

My contribution is a Christmas cake. I normally avoid them as I find them too heavy and rich but I liked the idea of this one as you make it in the saucepan. It smells lovely and it's such a moist, light, festive cake.

@IHeartKingThistle do you have a rough recipe : item list for your fab breakfast? We aren’t usually at home on Boxing Day but will be this year and it feels like a nice thing to do! Do leftover pigs in blankets feature? Scrambled eggs with cream? Ooh I’m excited by the prospect!

TheOnlyMrsW · 09/12/2025 17:14

@MrsWhites @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius sorry for your losses Flowers

Can't believe I've only just seen this thread, so many look fab! Any ideas for a GF christmas pudding recipe all? I've made my own already but have been invited to a friend's for Boxing Day who is GF and is always complaining they can't get decent ones in the shops

Love this carrot recipe, can make ahead and freeze and just heat up in microwave on Xmas day…just remember it’s there! It’s so tasty!

I tried this recipe over Christmas and it is now a family favourite.
Thank you for sharing it.

I made this to use up some ham and turkey on Boxing Day. It was religious and loved by all.

These speculaas/speculoos cookies - I don't own proper speculaas moulds, I just roll the dough out and use a cookie cutter. I make a double batch of the dough and keep it for a day or two, then make the cookies a few days ahead of whenever I want them - they're amazing. BIL asks for these as his Christmas present every year now instead of anything shop-bought.

Also Nigella's chocolate shortbread cookies, but I leave off the icing, they're better without the extra sweetness.

For savoury things, Delia's parmesan sables are pretty hard to beat.

Traditional Speculoos Cookies

Whether you know them as speculoos cookies, speculaas, spekulatius or Biscoff, these buttery, crunchy, gingerbread cookies are delicious!
