I'm going to try the Delia Chocolate torte recipe this weekend. It calls for liquid glucose, which I don't have. Do you think simple syrup would work as an alternative? It's just sugar and water but I do have a bottle in the drinks cabinet for cocktails. Or does it really need to be liquid glucose?

girlmeetsboy · 07/10/2025 12:13

This is delicious with a selection of cheeses, great thread and ideas!

This is the mushroom Wellington recipe I use every year for the vegetarians in the family.

It is quite fiddly, and makes quite a large portion so I tend to make it ahead of Christmas, eat one and freeze one for Christmas day. This has led to having a 'fake christmas' tradition in late November - Christmas jumpers obligatory.

I think it will need to be liquid glucose - it's usually on the baking section of supermarket where all the cake mixes and sprinkles are - Dr Oetker one is about £2-odd

Nigellas gingerbread stuffing- it is not Christmas without it. Ottonleghi chocolate babka bread and his spice cookies also always get made.

I make marzipan fruits. They always take much longer to make than you think. Plus Christmas biscuit tree using the set of cutters that Lakeland do. I make enough to have two small extra trees. I used to do a gingerbread house but have given up on that. Plenty of Rocky Road.

Marzipan fruits make me remember very happy childhood Christmases making these with my mum. She had all the food colouring out in wee artist palettes with wee paintbrushes, cheese grater for texture and cloves for fruit stems. I love getting a box of them now as they give me that lovely feeling! Yours look fabulous.

These are my go to muffin recipie.

Christmas jam - raspberries, cranberries, and an orange, made to a normal jam recipe

Christmas tree, using ready made pastry, pesto and cheese. Have also made it with cranberry sauce.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/pestochristmastree53067

Christmas spirit - half fill a bottle with cranberries, a chopped up clementines a cinnamon stick, and some sugar. Top up with vodka (no judgement what you do with the left over vodka). Shake once a day for 2 weeks, then strain into a clean bottle. Bright pink and Christmassy. Lethal (in a good way) added to sparkling wine 😍

If anyone wants actual weights and a recipe for the jam or the spirit, let me know, they are written down somewhere!

Edited

would you mind letting me know the recipes please, they both sound lovely 😋

@keepincool thank you very much, off to Morrisons I go! I shall report back once I've made it 😀🍫

I make a chocolate tart every year. Super simple. Shortcrust pastry filled with dark
chocolate ganache. We started making it at Easter where it had mini eggs on top. Last Christmas I made a white chocolate igloo for the top.

Also; a Yule log. Cover a Swiss roll (bought or made - no judgement here!) with chocolate butter icing, and add coins, snowmen, or whatever festive decorations you happen to have.

MrsWhites · 07/10/2025 21:25

We have a Christmas Yule log day in our family, the children in the family all decorate a Yule log. We just buy cheap Swiss rolls and the children cover with buttercream and decorations.

I've made with both liquid glucose and golden syrup (separate occasions) and it didn't seem to make much difference.

Almost every Christmas, I make Nigella’s Parmesan shortbreads - I didn’t make them last year, but ds3 has already requested them for this year.

I make Delia Smith’s classic Christmas cake with home made marzipan and royal icing - but the last time I made it, I didn’t follow Delia’s recipe for marzipan - her recipe involves whisking eggs and sugar over simmering water for about 10 minutes, then whisking it off the heat until cool, before adding the ground almonds and almond extract - and frankly I am too knackered for all that. So last time I just whisked the eggs and sugar (no heat) u til fluffy, then added the rest of the stuff, and it was absolutely fine - no different to Delia’s labour-intensive version.

Parmesan Shortbreads

This is an Italian-inspired recipe that comes to me from Australia via Brazil. To explain: a Brazilian friend, and the best cook I know, Helio Fenerich made it for me, and I had to keep (rudely) asking him to carry on making it for me. Eventually, I be...

I always make these florentines at Christmas. I cut them into smallish squares and decorate with christmassy sprinkles and give as gifts (as well as scoffing a few myself). The recipe is from a book I found years ago in TK Maxx by Julie Le Clerc.

Thanks for this!

keepincool · 10/10/2025 13:15

Another recipe for parmesan shortbreads, this time with a hint of chili. My DNiece requests these every year at Christmas - they are really moreish:

Julie Le Clerc’s Mini Parmesan shortbreads
Place 1 cup flour, a good pinch each of salt and chili powder, and 100g of cubed butter in bowl of food processor; process until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Add ½ cup of grated parmesan and ½ cup grated cheddar cheese & pulse to combine into pastry.
Roll out to 5mm thick on lightly floured surface. Stamp out discs using 3cm cutter; place on lightly greased baking sheets, prick gently and chill for 30 minutes.
Bake at 190C / 150C fan / Gas 5 for 5-10 mins until golden

Your favourite Christmas recipe.
SisterMaryLuke · 10/10/2025 17:57

Agree with the Parmesan Shortbreads - delicious and very moreish. I also make Chorizo Puffs - puff pastry cut into very small rounds (maybe wine glass size), dampen edges with milk and then put a small amount of chorizo and manchego cheese chopped very small. Fold in half and press around edge (like a pasty). Brush with either egg wash or milk and bake in hot oven for about 10 mins. I make a big batch and open freeze uncooked and cook from frozen. Again, they are very delicious and moreish. Fiddly though, not one to do with little children about!

Isometimeswonder · 10/10/2025 18:11

I don't believe in special recipes for Christmas.
I make them any time I want!!
Cheers for the ideas folks!

MrsWhites · 11/10/2025 10:38

How long will the Parmesan shortbreads keep for? I’m thinking of making them for food hamper gifts I make for family and friends.

They do last a few days, if you can keep people from snaffling them at once!

FurForksSake · 11/10/2025 12:37

Does anyone have a cheese twist recipe? I’m thinking a warm cheese twist and a chocolate twist and a cinnamon twist might be a nice festive breakfast.
