Year round Nigel Slater discussion thread Part 2

Hello, all and welcome to this lovely space for our continued chats.

A bit of background for anyone not familiar with this topic:

The Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles readalong usually takes place here between November and February each year (the Christmas Chronicles being a book written by Nigel Slater full of winter recipes and anecdotes) It's been running for a few years, and the contributors have collectively decided it would be nice to have it running all year round.

So here it is. It is a place to appreciate all things Nigel-esque. Think seasonal food and recipes, enjoyment of nature, gardening, appreciation of the weather, and sharing of news and small moments of joy. It's a calm, cosy space for gentle chat and merriment so pull up a deckchair, grab a drink and relax.

A very hearty welcome to friends new and old!

Bugger. Left it just a tad too late 🙄. Ah well, lovely blooms for the house. The other stalk is still fine and flower heads attached - it’s in a very sheltered area of the garden.

I also left it too late, Bimbles. Most of my pots are all over already, but the dinner plate dahlia is standing strong so far as it's so massive and in a heavy pot (and at the very bottom of the garden path; they are all in a long row) Contemplating dashing out and cutting a few more blooms, but they are already soaked, so maybe not.

They look beautiful, BTW and I also ❤️ your windows!

foul weather here so cresting a fug up here. New candle too which is spiced bergamot and ginger. From Sainsbury’s

Bimblesalong · 03/10/2025 21:55

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior We have the surviving stem in its pot on a bin bag on the back door mat.

Just back from the superb evening of flamenco, with three super sweet and incredibly talented artists from Andalusia. I feel awfully embarrassed about the weather!

Who was it last year that mentioned having one of these candle lamps? I just decided to get one and I love it. Thinking of buying a second one for my conservatory (for when the roof is eventually done and it's an actual usable room) For £10 from Amazon I think I just might.

I think that might have been me @RainbowZebraWarrior. They're lovely, aren't they! And very good for ekeing out a candle (and not getting smoke on the walls).

CrushingOnRubies · 04/10/2025 18:52

i want a candle lamp for that price! Just need to figure out where it would live.

made apple crumble filling this afternoon to freeze and use when dp is back and it’s worth making a pudding.

dog was clipped today and smells gorgeous

I've been pondering about the candle lamp too but I'm not sure where i would put it. I also have 3 large Victorian brass church candlesticks that I am pondering. They are supposed to be part of my antique business stock, but they might have migrated into my house and now I'm thinking that I might just keep them!

CrushingOnRubies · 05/10/2025 20:25

Weather was much calmer here today. So went for a 7 mile walk along a local creek.

now at my parents for a roast. Nothing beats a roast cooked by your mum

Thank you for the link, I’ve been thinking about one of these for some time. Such a good price and It looks as if I got a further £3.40 off the candle warmer (promo) but I can’t be sure as I had other items in the basket and it might have been for those.
Anyway, now I just need to find somewhere for it to live. Can’t wait to try it out!

Do people mainly use it to melt candles back to flat or for the fragrance like a wax melter?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 06/10/2025 08:12

@Chesticov I bought it for the fragrance element, however, the fact that it flattens out the top of the candle is a bonus and I'm now looking around the house for any wonky / tunnelled candles that need s tidy up!

Just a quick note to say that I'll be creating the Christmas Chronicles thread proper on 24th October. This is to give notice to any newcomers and allow us all some time to indulge in the introduction (which is always longer than I remember)

If this thread runs out sooner, I'll sort something but I think we will be OK.

Still windy here...

Just taken delivery of the candle lamp you recommended @RainbowZebraWarrior and I love it, so thank you so much! I’m sure Dd will love it, so I’m going to order another one for a Christmas present. Still enjoying all the posts, such lovely and interesting people on this thread, and looking forward to the CC thread proper later this month.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/10/2025 14:13

Pleased you're happy with the candle lamp @Seasidebubbles I'm still over the moon with mine.

Bright but windy here. Had the cobwebs blown away earlier going to visit our local seal population and then a slightly more sheltered walk around the Nature reserve. Things are looking nicely autumnal

Good morning all and Happy Friday!

It seems rather quiet so I hope all is well with everyone.

I've been for my usual jaunt around my local National Trust property which I do mist Fridays. Asked what they did with their apples from the walled Gardens to be met with a chorus of "oh help yourself, we haven't been as organised as usual this year' Bag for life duly whipped out of the boot and filled up. I cannot help myself! So I now have more apples. They look like good ones, mind. Might make some chutney and take it back for the volunteers. I've also applied to be a volunteer there myself.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good Friday. Here's a dahlia from Delaval Hall Gardens and one of said apple trees.

Is that St Mary’s Island @RainbowZebraWarrior? We visited in the summer. Loved watching the seals! The DDs spent a long time naming them. My personal faves were Neil and Barry 😂

Ps, should add that I think that’s my first post to this thread but I’m a longtime lurker and as others have said, this thread gives me a lovely warm feeling, sometimes much needed! So a big thank you from me to all the regular posters.

It is St Mary's island mummysandwich. I've been going there since I was a kid and visitors often seem to think I work there (I must look keen or something) I chatted to a lovely lady from London this week. It's my happy place ☺️ Tell your DDs I shall be sure to say hello to Neil and Barry!

I am about to check out on a fancy new camera as my old DSLR of 20 years has gone to camera heaven. Now I shall be able to get lovely close up photos of my beloved Northern Lapwings. (I apologise in advance if I bore you all rigid with bird and nature photography)

@RainbowZebraWarrior bring on the photography! Never boring, looking forward to seeing pictures as soon as you're ready Grin

Chilling on the sofa after my Covid jab. Flu jab next week - getting coverage for autumn indoor fun 😀

candle: white co winter. My ds gave me a substantial white co card for my birthday and I look forward to choosing some indulgent smellies soon - hoping they’ll have a 20% off event as previous years.

Nothing to report here! Although the heating has gone on for the last couple of nights. Only turned it the thermostat up to 21degrees which is room temperature, but it does take the edge off the cold which is starting

AccessSaver · 11/10/2025 15:58

The heating has been on for a while in my house 😁. I'm going to dig out my CC book in preparation for 24 October

Seasidebubbles · 11/10/2025 18:53

That looks so cosy @Bimblesalong , enjoy your WhiteCo spend. I’ve treated myself to their advent calendar, an expensive treat but a lovely way to sample their different candles and indulgent lotions and potions.
