What cheap afterthought gift has ended up a massive hit?!

For us, it's two 'mummy bunnies' who have babies that appear in their toy hutch (some weird mechanism where they drop down from the roof). They were mega reduced on Amazon last week so I bought one for each DD, even though it is really tat and I try to avoid tat mainly.

Well, the absolute amazement and joy when DD1 checked her hutch to find four babies in it. She's been playing with them for 30 mins now. DD2 about to be awoken from a nap and will see what she makes of it.

Anyone else had some surprise hits?

A little soft toy dinosaur in a plastic egg from the Natural History Museum. DS6 has been cuddling it pretty much all day and has gone to sleep cuddling it (inside the egg! 😅).

RobinEllacotStrike · 25/12/2024 19:33

Chicken leg socks!

13yo chuffed to bits with them.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 25/12/2024 19:36

Previously - Blu Tack 😆

This year - mini Simon game. Boop, beep beep boop.

Laughingmole · 25/12/2024 19:37

A light up Santa wand for £3 has been DS age 2’s favourite present by far!

Monkey4444 · 25/12/2024 19:39

A £14 cockapoo soft toy pillow from eBay and it’s massive hit with my DS. Best present of Christmas!

Fluffypiki · 25/12/2024 19:43

The teen got up and told his sister after poking all the gifts that the soft ones were generally crappy, well turns out the basic black beany hat in it's soft packaging was his favourite gift 🙄.

Reduced jumper from Tesco (DS age 17!). Proper last minute and he loved it

Chocolategirl19791 · 25/12/2024 19:48

Our generation vet clinic - got the other day on the local bartering site in exchange tor a bottle of Prosecco. Knew she'd like it but didn't want to give it just before Christmas so kept for the big day. It's obviously played with and pre loved but she hasn't commented and was pleased at it all up ready. Even I'm cool for school DD1 who is 11 and just wanted an iPad and skin care has been playing with her younger sister with it

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/12/2024 19:56

In 2018, I picked up a £1.99 soft toy that was in one of those baskets by the till while I was in the queue to buy something else.

It instantly became my son's favourite thing in the entire world. He's now 8, and Gingerbread Man still goes everywhere with him.

I honestly thought it would just be a cute teddy decoration we got out every year.

Cryingatthegym · 25/12/2024 20:03

A couple of tiny £1 squishy dinosaurs which neither DS (3 & 2) has put down all day.

A really cheap remote control monster truck that I picked up in the range at the last minute. The 3 year old has spent all day telling me 'it's perfect mummy'.

Shame it's probably going to break in 2 days!

NameChanger407 · 25/12/2024 20:11

I dont know the name of it, but some weird slime/sand type thing, was maybe £2 & DD has been obsessed with it all day

A gymnastics bar which was cheap off TikTok shop so I didn't think would be great but DH built it earlier and DD has been hanging off I since. It seems solid and folds up so I'm happy and she's delighted

Any chance you could send me a link? I was considering getting my daughter one for Christmas but wasn't sure if the cheap one would be sturdy enough. Thanks!

A remote control poo!

Where can I get one of these?!! DS3's birthday is coming up.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/12/2024 21:39

An afterthought skipping rope that counts your skips for Gdd 9. Major hit!

CalliopePlantain · 25/12/2024 21:40

Funnily enough, I came to post the mouse version of what you’ve put in your OP! DD(5.5) has been playing with it all day. I only ordered it on Monday as a last minute twitch.

for DS(7.5) it’s a Costa reusable babycino travel cup that he’s proudly been drinking from

CheeseTime · 25/12/2024 21:44

Roll of 500 stickers of Jesus.

mammaCh · 25/12/2024 22:11

Coloured hair mascara!

OooPourUsACupLove · 25/12/2024 22:20

For my dad who was becoming disabled, one of those sofa arm organiser things. I saw it in passing at a local shop and thought it would help corral all the odds and sods he had around him. He was so pleased with it and made it a core part of his growing sofa centre of operations 😂❤

DonningMyHardHat · 25/12/2024 22:20

All the random bits in their stockings (stickers, putty, needoh, new toothbrushes, bath bombs, pens etc - nothing much over a fiver). DS announced ‘I didn’t ask for ANY of these things but they are the BEST PRESENTS EVER’.

He was equally as delighted by a slinky from his aunt.

Also the £30 bundle of secondhand dressing up clothes (mostly princess dresses) has been thoroughly loved by DD. She has worn about 8 different outfits today.

kittyycatt · 25/12/2024 22:36

£3 dinosaur snapper from The Works. DS6 said it was his favourite present and was very upset when he broke it by bending the mouth the wrong way. It lasted 6 hours maybe and now we need to go into town to replace it!

bringonyourwreckingball · 25/12/2024 22:46

Dd2 stocking gift of pastel highlighters, she loves them.
Several surprise hits this year of varying cost - best of all was a print I bought my mum which was a bit of a risk but she LOVED it.
Very happy with the presents all round this year, everyone loved what they got and both children bought me very thoughtful gifts as well.

Flustration · 25/12/2024 23:05

Rechargeable electric arc candle lighter (<£6) for hard-to-buy for DS (16). He's always taking my matches so as a complete afterthought I ordered one to go with the two candles he'd requested.

His face when he realised what it was and what it did! Best present ever apparently.

Adult step son arrived later, saw it in action and immediately requested one too.

The box of fragrance samples from Notino that was recommended on the Christmas bargain threads also cost under £6 and was exceptionally well received.

A Fart Box that you plant behind something & you activate with remote control- £4.99 in Home Bargains, been played with more than the Switch games/ VR headset/requested board games 🙈

My grandson had that, drove us nuts all day 😁

MojoJojo71 · 25/12/2024 23:12

A multipack of fluffy socks from shein

hellohellooo · 25/12/2024 23:16

wwyd2021medicine · 25/12/2024 16:42

Depends what you mean by cheap?

I bought DD1 a £25 air fryer from Asda at 630pm yesterday as an afterthought and she's over the moon 😊

That airfryer is the greatest thing I have ever purchased
