Do you do your own stocking or does your dh do it?

We’ve never done adult stockings and my parents stopped when we grew up. I love the idea of doing them now and will do one for my dh this year. Question is - do I ask him to do one for me or shall I do my own? 😉

He actually did one for me many years ago but stopped as it was always with my family who didn’t do adult stockings, so I know he wouldn’t be obtuse to it.

What would you want in yours?

We don't do adult stocking but I buy all my own gifts "from DH". It's an absolute win for me. I get precisely what I want, not similar to or thought you'd like this (but i hate it) etc. I despise wasted time and money on gifts for me that aren't 100% right. DH is great at lots of things but gift buying is definitely not his forte and I'm so ridiculously fussy that it's just not worth the risk.

Wait for the 100s of disappointed threads on Xmas Day about MNers receiving shit gifts especially after giving expensive and thoughtful gifts.

I do my own!! I buy all the bits I want and put them in a drawer over November…for DH to wrap on Christmas Eve. I will have forgotten what I’ve bought by then 😂

Forgot to answer the question of what’s in it…

Laneige Lip Sleep Mask
Tangle Teezer hair brush
Kitsch scrunchies
Neom Christmas Wish oil
Diptique hand cream
Waitrose choc orangettes
Fluffy slippers
x2 books I want to read

Will add socks, Lush bath bombs and maybe a pair of earrings.

Edited

I never knew adults having stockings was a thing tbh

Stockings for kids, adult presents under the tree

Do your children think santa brought the adult presents too?

Chipshopninja · 21/11/2024 23:16

Oh and doing my own would be very depressing

Autumnweddingguest · 21/11/2024 23:22

DH does mine and I do his. We both do adult DCs. But I do DC's partners.

Doublepresents · 21/11/2024 23:22

My DH puts together a stocking for me and vice versa. I had never heard of doing your own. Always nice to treat yourself too of course but I love our stocking tradition, we go all out and exchange them on Christmas Eve as I'm originally from a country where the 24th is the main day and that way we get two days of presents.

Scutterbug · 21/11/2024 23:30

We do them for each other. You can’t do your own surely, it’s supposed to be a surprise! Plus it absolves your partner of any responsibility when they should be showing you that you are important and worthy of gifts!

mondaytosunday · 21/11/2024 23:33

Don't see the point of doing your own.

Teeh · 22/11/2024 06:26

Do most people do adult stockings? Do the children think Santa brings for adults too? I thought stockings were just for kids

LittleRedRidingHoody · 22/11/2024 06:42

I do the stockings for my family (because I love it!) ~ both parents, siblings, a few friends, and DS. I've always (before this year) let my DM pick the bits for mine and then been a bit disappointed, so this year I'm giving her a little bag of bits to go in mine 😂

I will have:

Lindt reindeer
Giant, and smaller, chocolate coins
A fancy, mini Norwegian candle
White company socks!
A beanie
Aesop hand sanitiser for my work bag
Starbucks gift card
Lush Super Milk conditioner (now basically my signature scent!)
Bag of Terrys chocolate orange minis - the popping candy ones
Whittards hot chocolate powder
Possibly a new perfume ~ jury's still out on if I can justify that one 😅

TENSsion · 22/11/2024 08:16

For the first few years of having kids, I did everyone’s but didn’t do my own. Then the kids started noticing I didn’t get anything in mine and started asking what I’d done so naughty that Santa missed me out 😂😂
So now I do my own too. But our stockings are only a bit of chocolate and something small like socks or little soft toy and my husband’s gifts to me are always thoughtful and very wanted so I don’t mind that he has this area of “development”

V weird

Why? She’s buying herself a few nice bits. So what?

MeanderingGently · 22/11/2024 08:23

Gracious, I stopped having a Christmas stocking when I was about 13 or so. I love Christmas but there are some things I've grown out of and have no wish to regress. But if it's your thing then crack on....!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/11/2024 08:25

I've never heard of adults getting stockings! Is this one of those things people don't mention and then you find out your family is odd for not doing it?

DieStrassensindimmernass · 22/11/2024 08:27

I don't see the point in adult stockings tbh, but if you're doing them as a family then you cannot do your own!

twentysevendresses · 22/11/2024 08:30

What is the actual point of doing a stocking for yourself?? 🤦‍♀️ Utterly bonkers! You either have one done for you, or you don't have one!

(And as I'm so petty, if my partner was the type to not do one for me, he wouldn't be bloody getting one either!! 😂)

StillAtTheRestaurant · 22/11/2024 08:31

niadainud · 21/11/2024 22:02

so I know he wouldn’t be obtuse to it

What does this mean?

I assume the OP means he wouldn't be "averse to it".

zaxxon · 22/11/2024 08:31

Stockings for adults?!? Is this a new thing?

As if Christmas needed any more consumerism....

tattiescone10 · 22/11/2024 08:33

My husband does mine. It's always small useful bits. Usually some phone cables, bath bomb or bubble bath, some chocolate, lip balm etc.

In his this year he is getting:
Phone cables
A hot sauce keyring
Phone case
Lighters
Bath and body works men scented hand sanitizers
A boxed pen
Chocolate
£5 Greggs gift voucher

VeruccaSalty · 22/11/2024 08:44

It wouldn't be Christmas without the faux Mumsnet surprise that people have different traditions to them....

We all open our stockings in our bed then go downstairs for presents. My husband does one for me, used to be terrible (pack of super noodles anyone?) but now he keeps it simple, for example a mascara, some socks, something chocolate, a mini bottle of prosecco.

SilentSnow · 22/11/2024 08:47

My DH chooses my gifts, I really wouldn't want to buy my own, what would be the point of that?

Shinyandnew1 · 22/11/2024 08:50

I can see why single parents might do a stocking for themselves if they have young kids, but otherwise that really odd!

Do you buy your own ‘big’ presents as well?!

ShoeJunkie · 22/11/2024 08:52

I love Christmas stockings! I’d rather have stocking presents than a main one.
DH does mine.
I also do DSis for her - DBIL transfers over my ‘budget’ every year as she was doing her own which is no fun at all.

ChristmasCwtch · 22/11/2024 08:52

It’s not weird. I put together stockings for 6 other people, adding a pile for myself of little gifts I’ll love makes sense 😂 All money’s shared anyway. There’s usually a techy surprise from DH too… like a hairdryer, kindle, iPad hahaha!! Generous, but anything that needs electricity isn’t my idea of a good gift 🤪

Always sad on Boxing Day how many people on here receive nothing from awful OHs who can’t be arsed at all. Please buy yourself something lovely if that’s the case.

yukikata · 22/11/2024 08:53

MrsSchnickelfritz · 21/11/2024 21:49

I honestly don't see the point in doing your own? I find the idea really depressing actually! It sounds like he'd be perfectly willing and capable from what little you've written so just ask him to do it.

This. Why would you do your own stocking? 😕The whole idea of gifts is that people give them to one another.
