First one I’ve seen is from Sainsbury’s featuring the BFG.

What is racist about the Boots advert?

Webbb · 12/11/2024 20:49

Baffled. How can it possibly be racist?! And sexist. For gods sake.

Monkeybutt1 · 12/11/2024 20:52

No idea, boycott boots is trending apparently. I thought it was great. Love the Barbour one too

JewelleryCat · 12/11/2024 21:05

I’m not keen on the Boots advert but I can’t see how it is racist or sexist

JenniferBooth · 12/11/2024 21:17

I love the Aldi advert...........always love Kevin the Carrot I love the Boots advert.

And ive just seen the Tesco one and think its really sweet

RainbowZebraWarrior · 12/11/2024 21:24

There's nothing racist about it at all. The problem lies in people prefacing a statement with "I've seen or read this.. " and perpetuating it without thinking.

IamChipmunk · 12/11/2024 21:34

Tesco was cute.
Link to the long 'English' version here!
Like how the two versions have two different corresponding accents and names!!

I wonder why this version was longer than the version posted above earlier. I did prefer this one because there’s more detail and you could follow the story more imo whereas the one earlier, only snippets were taken to make that version if that makes sense

The actress in it pointed out that the Royal family are'terribly white' which is er, true but sparked accusations of racism towards white people.

Because clearly the British Royal family are a downtrodden marginalised bunch we must defend from prejudice that might leave them disadvantaged.

And that's exactly what it is. It's a disgrace that Adjoa Andoh is in this ad to be honest. The ad is wrong on so many levels for a number of reasons. And there have been many complaints about it. Nearly 10,000 so far to Ofcom, making it one of the most complained about ads ever, and the most complained about ad on TV this year.

I am hoping they pull it soon. I won't hold my breath, but it has hardly been shown in the last 2-3 days. So fingers crossed it's thrown where it belongs. (In the bin!)

Frankly, I don't see enough people who look like me in it.

StarSlinger · 13/11/2024 21:01

I love the Boots Ad.

StarSlinger · 13/11/2024 21:14

The Royal family are terribly white. What's the problem with saying that?

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 13/11/2024 21:45

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway

Racism is defined by the OED as "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior".

Pointing out that the royal Family are white, even 'terribly white' isn't prejudiced or discriminatory, it's a valid observation, especially in light of the accusations that they weren't exactly inclusive of Meghan. I'd argue the 'terribly' is just a posh turn of phrase.

But given 82% of the Uk is terribly white it hardly comes across as an offensive thing to say.

And given it was about the Royal family I don't think they're at much risk of feeling discriminated or downhearted about it.

JenniferBooth · 13/11/2024 22:02

I love the blue dress she wears in the Boots ad

Myattention · 14/11/2024 06:33

I quite like the JL ad this year. Particularly as there is no toy or stuffed animal gimmick with it.

David Beckham is in the Ninja ad.

John Lewis!!

Love the Verve so extra marks for the sound track.

I prefer it to all the sad ones, but there’s a bit too much talking for my liking.

GrumpyCactus · 14/11/2024 06:39

Maybe it's because it's only just past half 6 and I've already been up a while but the John Lewis ad was very meh. It didn't make me smile, feel sentimental, nostalgic or even remotely Christmassy? It felt very flat, thrown together and forgettable.

Shoobidowhop · 14/11/2024 06:44

VillageFete · 04/11/2024 21:30

In what way will the food ads be different? Oh, I don’t like change! 😥

Unhealthy food restrictions including ads, you'd still be able to show a table of xmas dinner but not focus on e.g. a mince pie or party food. We might be seeing a lot of sprouts....

Whinge · 14/11/2024 06:51

Well compared to the Robin advert, the real John Lewis advert was a letdown.

...when did gnomes become part of Christmas?

Gnomes are Asda's thing! They have Pride Gnomes, Festival Gnomes, Christmas Gnomes... they even did Jubilee Gnomes!

Oh! I didn't know that, fair enough then 😀

StarSlinger · 14/11/2024 07:22

At least the JL ad uses the original track this year and not some slowed down breathy version.
