First one I’ve seen is from Sainsbury’s featuring the BFG.

At least the JL ad uses the original track this year and not some slowed down breathy version.

You spoke too soon apparently they are looking for someone to cover the song...

On November 15, a nationwide search for aspiring musicians to cover Ashcroft's melody will be launched and the winner's version will be released on TV on Christmas Day.

I'll try and give the Christmas day ad a miss then.

Not a tearjerker this year; I was expecting the sister to have died, or something. Sorry, but I prefer a boxer dog on a trampoline.

rolloverbeethoven · 14/11/2024 08:00

I've just watched the ones I could find on YouTube (Tesco, John Lewis & Boots) and now I feel a bit scared and want to go back 50 years.

tealdrop · 14/11/2024 08:32

I wasn’t impressed by the JL advert. I have a sister and I’m sentimental so it should appeal in theory! My DC (11 and 9) enjoy watching the Christmas adverts each year but they didn’t get it. They enjoyed the Aldi and Argos ones (they even remembered the names of the characters in the Argos one, from last year!). We haven’t watched the others yet.

JewelleryCat · 14/11/2024 08:37

I’ve just watched the JL ad, wasn’t a tear jerker. I was quite confused with it to be honest, I didn’t really understand what was happening. There was walls collapsing, different scenarios and I wasn’t impressed

My favourites are: Aldi, Argos and Barbour

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 14/11/2024 08:54

Not feeling JL advert at all. I think Aldi’s and Lidl’s adverts are good but so far Sainsbury’s wins for me.

YorkieTheRabbit · 14/11/2024 09:27

Love the JL advert, I may have shed a tear while watching it this morning

GinnyPiggie · 14/11/2024 09:39

I didn't understand the JL advert - I thought it was her daughter that she was shopping for! I didn't like the nightmarish/Labyrinth vibe to the collapsing rooms. I had to read the press releases to discover what it was actually about.

The actress in it pointed out that the Royal family are'terribly white' which is er, true but sparked accusations of racism towards white people.

Because clearly the British Royal family are a downtrodden marginalised bunch we must defend from prejudice that might leave them disadvantaged.

When someone is racist about a family the wealth of that family is beside the point.

When someone is racist about a family whether you like that family is beside the point. (I despise the institution of the monarchy)

When someone is racist about a family it doesn't even matter if they saw it or not. The problem is the racist damaging our society.

I cannot stand these Christmas ads. With their 'feel good' factor and stories of losing hope and then faith being restored with a loving family. The tone and style of the voice overs they all have, trying to make the jingle rhyme - . yuck, yuck, yuck and totally and utterly false representations of true family life in the UK.

and then there is the competition between the leading competitors to produce the best Christmas advert. Most of the advertisers don't even promote their goods, it just about getting the brand name out there as being the lead Christmas ad for the year. Urgh.

Webbb · 14/11/2024 10:55

I don't 'get' the John Lewis advert either. Felt nothing. Didn't understand. Daughter, sister? Forgettable after the brilliant Boots and Aldi ones.

Myattention · 14/11/2024 11:02

The John Lewis advert says sister as she walks through the wardrobe and looks inside the chest.

I still thought it was her child as a sibling... also thought she was talking to her pregnant self to reassure her... well I was just thick

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/11/2024 11:17

I don't mind the new JL advert. Not the best ever, but better than some of their recent efforts. Interesting how certain things become traditions and feel like they've been around forever. JL only did their first one in 2007.

Here it is - quite simple but clever.

Agree with all this. ^ Many people don't have a family, (or much family,) and even those who do, are estranged from them. So yes, I am also sick of the ads with the BIG happy families - often 15-20 people, as it's not representative of most people. They also promote spending a lot on luxury foods and gifts etc, and many people are on the bones of their arse.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/11/2024 11:23

I haven't seen that horrific Boots ad for a few days now. Looks like it may have been removed whilst Ofcom investigate the complaints. I'm hoping it doesn't return. I bet it does though. Hmm

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow

Pointing out that the royal Family are white, even 'terribly white' isn't prejudiced or discriminatory, it's a valid observation, especially in light of the accusations that they weren't exactly inclusive of Meghan. I'd argue the 'terribly' is just a posh turn of phrase.

But given 82% of the Uk is terribly white it hardly comes across as an offensive thing to say.

Nice try. Not having it. If the shoe was on the other foot, and a white person had said something similar, they would have been annihilated by the media and the public, and cancelled. Don't tell me that wouldn't have happened because it would.

Yeah, the Royal family is pretty much almost all white. So what?

GinnyPiggie · 14/11/2024 11:53

I had assumed from the furore that the Boots ad said the royal family was very white. Was it just that the black actor involved once said it?! IS THAT IT?

Yes, how OTT. If a white person remarked that the Royal Family is terribly white, who would care?

She's a brilliant actress and the advert is fantastic. All the furore surrounding it just gives them more press and engagement.

Chersfrozenface · 14/11/2024 12:43

The BBC has a "feature" on the UK news page about Christmas adverts.

It talks about Aldi, Asda, Greggs, Morrisons, Waitrose, M&S (food), Argos, Amazon, John Lewis (non food). Not a peep about Boots.

You'd have thought the Beeb, with its obvious agenda and obsession with drag acts, would be all over the Boots ad. But no, complete tumbleweed.

The JL one is her searching her memories for the perfect gift, then past child sister whispers to her and she find the perfect thing…. BUT THEY DONT TELL US WHAT?!?! What’s in the box JL? It could be anything from diamond earrings to her deceased childhood pet hamster!!

StandingSideBySide · 14/11/2024 17:01

Love the Aldi one with the
Bit of adult humour thrown in 👏👏🥳

Was it meant to be her sister (as a child) whispering in her ear at the end?? It wasn’t clear. I find it all rather confusing too!
