Hi all. So for the first time ever I will be hosting Christmas Day dinner in my home.

And to that end, I've decided to give my house a massive clean, declutter & reorganisation (very badly needed!).

I've worked out there are 16 weekends to Christmas (well actually 17 but I want to use the last one for food prep) so I'm dividing my house into 16 sections & going to spend one day every weekend on a different section.

I'm starting this weekend. Would anyone like to join?

Only managed to hoover downstairs and do one load of washing today...
Had friends here for lunch 🍽
It's just too hot to do anything else 🫠

it's still improvement....

swampwitch0 · 14/08/2025 17:00

Cleaned the kitchen and recycling bin lids and the tumble dryer filter.

Honestly?
I've given up. I've tried so mant products - I've eben resorted to naling my own 🙄
I now employ an oven cleaning business - they charge £50 and my oven looks like new! They totally took it apart to clean.
I have just found a brilliant - if expensive - product for shower screen glass...
I've tried everything over the years...we live in a very hardwater area and I was so fed up I was thinking of replacing the shower screen!
It's called glass guard. Its made my manky shower screen look like new again.
I paid £20 for 500ml 😬
Do any of you have shutter blinds on your windows?
Would you recommend?

In the past I have felt like getting a professional to do. Maybe need to bite the bullet!

I use Elbow Grease spray on the oven shelves and a wire wool scrubber and a good spray of it overnight on the base . I use one of those blade thingies in the plastic handle on the glass door where the splatters get baked on. I was very Hmm at first but they work really well and don't scratch . Then a rub with Astonish paste and buff (love that stuff but it dries out if the lid isn't secure so I need to wrap in a tight plastic bag )

Some people use dishwasher tablets not tried it , I think you need the solid ones and I only have the capsule ones .

It's one of my unfavourite jobs , especially the getting myself comfy on a stool and wedge the door to keep it steady .
But it's great once it;s done .

I've just ordered one of the scrapers! Hoping that helps. I can usually get the door lovely but it is the base that never seems to come up great.

I haven’t got so much deep cleaning done as I’d hoped, but I have sorted a lot of papers and managed to dump a large bag of unneeded bits. Patterns for jumpers I will never knit (I’ve kept plenty that there’s a vague hope I might), magazine articles on managing young teens (she’s now left home for Uni), recipes that include a lot of spice/heat (I like a bit but not fiery hot)….so there’s a full lever arch emptied out, half a shelf of books gown to charity shop and another big pile of paper gone as well.

swampwitch0 · 16/08/2025 16:14

Replaced the broken light shade in the conservatory.
Stripped the beds and washed the sheets (duvets done last week..)
Another load done, too.
I think that's me done for today!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/08/2025 01:08

Eurgh , I had an unpleasant cleaning experience today (I;m sure you;ll all sympathise Xmas Grin ) but GROSS WARNING :

I usually vacuum round on a Friday but did it today as I did a Costco shop on Fri.
DH has the (frankly bloody useless ) robot vacuum set to pottle round the bedroom and landing . It is rubbish , misses loads and gets stuck.

Today it was off on it's round ( about two hours after I vacuumed ) . I went upstairs "Weird Smell" then saw a load of debris.
One of our cats had chucked up under the bed and the Bloody Useless Robt Vac churned it up all under the bed .

Yes , it would've been worse if it had come out of the Other End .

I;ve told DH he can move it downstairs as it's mainly hard floor and it might picl up cat hair and crumbs .
Cleaning the vacuum was not the highlight of my day either !

@70isaLimitNotaTarget
Ooof 😣
I agree re: robot vacuums..I had one and it was rubbish

Between yesterday (teamwork on the ivy) and today (solo just tidying up), I’ve managed to get almost all the jobs I usually do in the back garden around this time of year, done. DH replaced the outside lights and together we strimmed back the ivy on the 10’ back wall (it’s a once every 2 years job). There were 15 massive armloads to move to the neighbourhood compost area. Today, I finished tidying up after that job, cut back the individual strands of ivy escaping onto the shed and under the tree fern and gave the patio and side passage a proper sweep and weeding. So another 3 big tubs of compost stuff gone.

DH also identified another couple of things to bring to BIL next week - so more decluttering happening.

Then, while having a shower to clean up, I noticed the mechanism for the door was stiff - some sludge was building up so that also got a clean. So a satisfying couple of days.

We have emptied the garage and are sorting out what to keep, what to get rid of.and where it should all go. Looks as though it is going to be much better by this evening.

Thulpelly · 17/08/2025 15:10

This is batshit, sorry

No you're not, else you wouldn't have posted.

You know you can just ignore the thread and / or not post on it?

I'm guessing that 100% of us who enjoy this thread don't give a shit what you think! 🤷‍♀️🤣

I'm lurking rather than doing at the moment although I have made my list of things to sort around the house in late summer / autumn. A couple of painting jobs have been parked while DH is WFH. Not his fault - his office buildings having a major refurb and staff have been asked to work elsewhere if they can. But I want to get my moving!

I'm trying to tidy up the garden instead. Some plants in pots are suffering in the hot and dry weather (and neglect while we were away)so I want to plan for some winter colour and also empty the garage so that I can fit my car in once the weather gets properly cold. At the moment I have a pile for household waste site and a smaller pile for charity donations which is fine but they won't move of their own accord!.

FoolShapeHeart · 19/08/2025 23:14

I've just been catching up on Christmas threads & saw this thread mentioned - I opted in last year and then promptly got distracted and forgot all about it 🤦‍♀️ This year we've had necessary building work done and we're taking the opportunity to declutter while it's a whirlwind of chaos here anyway. Surely, if we're deep cleaning and clearing out as we go, this year will be easier? 🙏

I hope to be all done by Advent, so I've marked out a few hours each weekend until then. We're already booked up for 1 weekend which leaves 13 afternoons specifically for the Christmas Cleanalong. Is it sad that I'm really excited?!

One of the advantages of getting older and offspring having long since flown the nest is that we tend not to gather as much ‘stuff’ as no one is growing out of clothes or toys etc and we have more time to keep things in some sort of order. Having said that it still amazes me as to how much lazier we are, so I will be trying to get to grips with some sorting out and deep cleaning as we head into the autumn months.

Clothes have been given a good sort out over the summer and I was ruthless in getting rid of things that no longer serve a purpose, but that period of sorting came to a grinding halt leaving a section of wardrobe still to be finished. Airing cupboard is next on the list as I am sure I don’t need as many sets of bedding or towels as I have. I have two further rooms I want to get rid of stuff from and then the focus will shift to deep cleaning. Most deep cleaning won’t be done until November, otherwise it will need doing again before Christmas.

autumnleaves8888 · 20/08/2025 12:30

Joining in ! I have had a huge sort out recently. Listed lots of my children's coats and toys on vinted which have sold! The rest will go to charity. I am hoping to tackle the kitchen cupboards and big larder cupboard in the next couple of weeks . Also have the big task of clearing out our conservatory/ play room! It's in desperate need of a deep clean .

frozendaisy · 20/08/2025 18:18

I need this as we look towards getting the teens back to school/college.
I will probably spring into action in September so am happy to follow anyone else's list if they put one up for that time about.

Before I spring into action I am going to totally declutter our bedroom. Ruthless I shall be.

Then onwards........

NoWordForFluffy · 20/08/2025 18:31

I have added painting the garden fence to my pre-Christmas workload! I have 4 massive tubs of paint coming tomorrow (£6 each on Amazon, so a bargain), so I can get going in the next few weeks.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/08/2025 18:45

I've done a list for the BH weekend , including cleaning the hall./stair carpet as otherwise I'll never get round to it .
The feeling of achievement when I tick things off the list <easily pleased >

If it's nice then some lounging in the garden is called for .

swampwitch0 · 22/08/2025 13:42

We've just touched up the painted walls in the study.
Cleaned the skirting boards.
Dd is starting a btec next month so we've moved her week table in there and moved the tv.
1 more bag of clothes/bags to the pre loved shops earlier 👍
I'm itching to get my autumnal decor out 🍂🍁

swampwitch0 · 22/08/2025 13:43

All dds clothes from her holidays washed and dried 👍
I've got quite a few Christmas gift parcels coming (taking advantage of the sales...) so I'll need my storage bags down from the loft 😄

swampwitch0 · 22/08/2025 13:44

Oh blimey @70isaLimitNotaTarget
Youve just reminded me I need to use my carpet cleaner 😬

swampwitch0 · 23/08/2025 12:49

Over bank holiday dh is off for a couple of days (unusual)
So we are going to blitz the conservatory.
Also the guttering.
<fun times>

NoWordForFluffy · 23/08/2025 18:24

I've sorted and tidied the kids' lounge over 2 days and it is now done (and I am done in)! It needed doing so their 🎄 fits in. They'd better keep it sodding tidy!
