It's been a blast, but I feel ready to de-Christmas earlier than usual this year. I'm over it 🤪

Won’t even think about taking it down until 12th Night, and I would have it up till Candlemas in February, but for the fact that the council tree recycling scheme only operates at a certain time. I have to say, taking it down before New Year seems very weird to me. New Year is part of Christmas-time.

Ours has been up a week, will stay till at least 12th Night. I guess Epiphany doesn't mean anything to all those who think Christmas ends at midnight on 25 December.

@MsGoodenough @SiobhanSharpe I believe you can avoid the bad luck from not taking them down on Twelfth Night if you leave them up until Candelmas (2 February). Our live tree won't make it that long but lots of people in my bit of France leave outside lights up until then, and the municipal lights stay up too. Really helps to cheer up January!

Ooh @WashItTomorrow simultaneous thought about Candlemas!

We’re atheists so 12th night has no relevance to us so we have our own traditions - seems like the majority of posters of this thread follow their own timetable.
My DSIL is in the US - they put their tree up the day after Thanksgiving and take it down the evening of Christmas Day.

People wetting their knickers to put their trees up in November and then taking them down on the 2nd day of Christmas really makes me laugh

I agree. They are ridiculous 🙄

CathyorClaire · 26/12/2023 16:27

Coming down New Year's Day along with the rest of the decs.

I have an early Jan. birthday and like a separate day.

Or they just do things their own way. 🤷‍♀️

Sneering at people who put their trees up (apparently 'wetting their knickers' about it, rather than just making a choice to put it up) just makes those sneering look pretentious and pathetic, frankly, who can't appreciate that some people have their own traditions / ways of doing things.

We don't have to be an homogeneous mass in relation to how we celebrate Christmas.

Tree and decorations down this morning. Christmas is over. Good day yesterday and nice build up but it's finished now. Gloriously back to normal now.

We took ours down today and put them in the loft because we also got the suitcases down from the loft for my son to start packing up his stuff over the next few days. (He is moving away to do his apprentiship in January). We have a big lounge so that is where he is going to lay out all his things and see what else he needs so it was easier to clear space by taking down the decorations. So it’s practical for us and what the kids wanted to do so what does it matter? For my children it’s not upsetting to take them down early. Some children may find it upsetting but if that was the case presumably you would know that and keep them up. I don’t think children are usually as bothered as adults think they are by things like decorations. Some exceptions to the rule.
I think if people want to keep them up until January that is lovely but it doesn’t work for everyone. What if people are back to work in a few days so want to get everything sorted and clean as they know they will be too tired once back at work. My opinion is it really doesn’t matter and people should do what suits them.

No only up a week or so. Do not understand why so many put tree up in November and take it down the day after Christmas as that seems arseways to do things. Take it down 8th January and could not imagine tree not up for New Year's Eve. So many just want to tidy. Weird behaviour and especially if have children as takes away the spirit of Christmas.

RandomUsernameHere · 26/12/2023 16:42

I will be taking it down either this evening or tomorrow. I'm working this week and we're going away on Saturday so just want it gone along with all the other Christmas mess! For us, it's all about the excitement and build up to Christmas and then Christmas Day itself. I don't see any point in dragging it on beyond that.

Totally agree.

It does seem that those people who are more fluid on timings are way less uptight! 🤷‍♀️

GlomOfNit · 26/12/2023 18:41

No, because I'm not joyless and need some twinkly lights and prettiness around in the middle of the Dark. We put up the tree on the 16th and it'll come down after DH'a birthday in early Jan because he likes to have the lights up for it. We have until the 9th when the kids go back to school and it's still bloody Christmas!!

I put the tree up mid December this year and that's early for me. It happened because I bought a new fibre optic one and wanted to try it out once it arrived. It has been lovely.

I'll be taking it down New Year's Eve or New Year's Day as usual.
