So many Christmas Trees popping up on FB already. I've had another 4 friends today 🤦‍♀️ I mean each to their own, but it's still November. When did Xmas start being a 2 month year of decorations? I'm fed up of seeing captions, 'It's beginning to look like Christmas'. Sucking the joy out of it. I'm not a Grinch, honest lol 😆

Not worked up, just answering a thread while I attempt to wake up.

I can never understand why some people get worked up over this.

No ones getting worked up. Just pointing out that it's starting earlier and earlier every year. Like I said on my original post, each to their own, but shops could start a bit later. They're the worse for it.

I think it's a reflection of how much people need a sparkle of joy in their life.

The lights and festivity of putting the tree up provides that joy.

Live and let live.

Ours went up this weekend. Kids have their school Christmas fayre on Friday (and advent of course), village fayre on Saturday. It would feel wierd doing all that with no tree up. Kids have had a great weekend so no regrets here 😄

Ours is going up within the next couple of days because we have Christmas events on Friday and it would feel strange without our tree being up.

I've put all our decorations and trees up and dont find it too early as it cheers the house up and makes it cosy on the dark cold nights. Theres many reasons why people put trees up earlier than december and it's an individual choice. For me personally xmas is not just one day on the 25th but a build up of december events and catching up with friends/ family and doing different xmassy things. This will be the first xmas without my mum this year and rather than dreading xmas I'm embracing it which is partly why I've decorated now

Many hugs to you.
I lost my mum in September and not sure how I feel about Christmas yet.

Xxx

When did Xmas start being a 2 month year of decorations?

I get not putting decs up too soon but yesterday was a month until Boxing Day. Saying 2 months is an exaggeration.

MinnieMountain · 27/11/2023 08:08

November is a birthday month in our house. Our decorations are going up on Saturday.

CreeperBoom · 27/11/2023 08:22

Im the opposite.

I don't put mine up until the second week in December (otherwise I need to start replacing batteries by new year). I'd selfishly quite like everyone else to put them up now though.

I was driving home yesterday and it was dark and gloomy, and every set of lights I passed made everything seem a bit more cheerful. I can't wait for everyone to have decorated.

I meant because it starts straight after Halloween.

Mine isn't up yet either, I always till December I have no room for my tree this year so who knows might put it up Christmas Eve. Grin

hiredandsqueak · 27/11/2023 09:31

Other people's trees don't bother me in fact I enjoy some of the nicer ones I see lit up when walking the dog but I don't put ours up before the 15th because I'm just not into Christmas. The house on the other side of the cul de sac who cover the front of the house with flashing lights and other monstrosities and fill the front garden with a load of tat annoy me though purely because it's an eyesore.

It does in the shops but I don’t know anyone who puts up their decorations straight after Halloween. Driving around, I didn’t even see any decorated houses for a good few weeks afterwards. No Facebook photos either until this weekend gone.

Lesvaillantes · 27/11/2023 10:32

I’m with you op! I absolute love Christmas and enjoy approximately four full days of festivities every year but I don’t put my tree up and decorate until the 19th and we actually celebrate from about 24th to 29th.
I think it dilutes and diminishes the excitement of it when the decorations are put up too early and taken down too soon.

Tbh though, I think it’s fine if it’s just about decorations … each to their own… I find indulgence in what I call the “cult” of Christmas far more worrying!

This is going to sound rude which is not my intention, and each to their own, but if I am being honest, I think this current unhealthy obsession with Christmas that has developed over the last five years, as evident on the pages of Mumsnet, where people think about it all year around and obsess about every detail, is driven by a combination of relentless commercial pressure combined with a lack of “substance” or balance in people’s lives.

I’ve noticed that , not all, but some people tend to obsess about Christmas as a diversion away from some sort of unhappiness in their lives or to compensate for unfulfilling or unsatisfactory or absent human relationships.

You see the same thing in people who obsess over their pets to an unhealthy degree. Now I adore my animals but I don’t adore them to the extent that they prevent me having happy relationships and friendships with other humans.

The same imbalance is seen in obsessive house cleaners or obsessive hoarders. It’s all a distraction from some sort of pain or an inability to face life’s realities.

<stands back and waits for flame throwers 😁>

Disclaimer: I don’t mean any of this in an unkind way!

Scruffington · 27/11/2023 10:32

It does feel like this year a lot of people are putting the decorations up much earlier. But I'm not that fussed about other people's decor choices!

I like a real tree so tend to wait until mid-December.

  1. It's not two months. Christmas is in 28 days.
  2. Other people choose to do life differently to you. If it's not affecting you, why do you have an opinion?
  3. Have you always been so joyless? If so, I'm so sorry.
Pistolpunk · 27/11/2023 12:47

My sons football coach has had his up for 4 weeks already. I know 2 other people who put theirs up 2 weeks ago as well. Crazy.

I think you know the unusual people. I literally know no one who has done this.

WidowedMum · 27/11/2023 15:53

It definitely seems more of a ‘trend’ this year. I put mine up late November about five years ago as I was going away and the people with the snarky comments then are the ones who put theirs up early this year!

As PP said I don’t care when people put them up but why then say you’re bored and take them down before new year? It feels like some people rush from one event to the next and for what? There’s no medal at the end of it!

tropicaltailwind · 27/11/2023 15:58

I put a few lights up outside, a wreath on the door and got the tree out the week of US Thanksgiving, since where I live (Caribbean) that’s when a lot of the action starts. The tree just has a string of lights on and we will put the baubles on this weekend when it’s December. I will also put the rest of the outside lights up this weekend. Lots of people do outside lights here and driving around looking at lights is a nice festive family activity.

OldTinHat · 27/11/2023 16:00

I've set my ring doorbell to a Grinch reply.

That's the limit of my festivities!

Take it down on Boxing Day???? That’s Christmas. The world’s gone mad I tell ye!

Haha ours is always down on Boxing Day! We go away on holiday on the 27th and are all back to work and school the day after we get back. No way do I want to be dealing with dropped pine needles and having to take down lights and tidying away the decorations then. Our cleaner comes when we’re away and it starts the new year with a lovely fresh slate.
our tree is only ever up for a couple of weeks which suits me fine.
