So many Christmas Trees popping up on FB already. I've had another 4 friends today 🤦‍♀️ I mean each to their own, but it's still November. When did Xmas start being a 2 month year of decorations? I'm fed up of seeing captions, 'It's beginning to look like Christmas'. Sucking the joy out of it. I'm not a Grinch, honest lol 😆

I don't get why it bothers others so much. We put ours up weekend before last as my kids were really excited and asked me to. They absolutely love seeing the decorations and it's made us all happy.

I didn't put pics in social media and no one would know unless they visited us or walk by the house. I had a friend scoff when I told her and I replied, 'it doesn't effect you at all, why are you so bothered?'

Each to their own I say!

Same - it really confuses me that people feel so strongly about others choosing to do things they personally wouldn't. I imagine them scowling to themselves if they go past a decorated house on the bus. It's weird.

If you don't want your tree up until December, fine. Why the urge to shit on other people's pleasure?!

Fluffyc1ouds · 27/11/2023 16:39

I know people have always gone early but it used to be unheard of to put a Christmas tree up in November, now I'm seeing it more and more. Personally I think November is far too early to be celebrating Christmas but live and let live I guess.

TinklingToadstools · 27/11/2023 16:40

It doesn't bother me at all, often when you speak to people who decorate early there's often a reason behind it, my neighbour has a terminal illness her decorations are up. It's never too early for the children, and adults who suffer with depression find the twinkle lights give them a boost. Obviously there's a lot of people who just love xmas.
Allow them to make their own choices and you make yours.

Do you know I think that's what it is. Even when the kids go back to school in September, the Christmas aisles start with chocolates and food in supermarkets. Then as soon as Halloween is over, Christmas Ads, decorations and music everywhere 🤦‍♀️ I'm burnt out by it all by the end of November. It's rammed down everyone's throat now from September. I honestly don't remember it being that way when I was a kid. Think it all started after Bonfire Night, which was early but okay.

I agree. We’ve started to totally skip autumn, which is such a lovely season.

By Christmas Day I’m totally over it.

Lovemusic82 · 27/11/2023 16:42

I won’t be putting mine up but have nothing against those who do. There’s already lots of Christmas events happening, light switch ones, markets etc, slits not like you can avoid Christmas until mid December.

Soj34 · 27/11/2023 16:47

I love it how it's almost a Middle Class stealth boast how late they can put it up. 'Oh, perhaps it will go up on Christmas Eve if we have time after church' 🤣
Ours went up two days ago. The kids absolutely love it and my son's birthday is Boxing Day so it'll be down then so we can focus on his birthday. Who cares what anyone else does? There's enough misery in the world without caring about when other people's trees go up.

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/11/2023 17:10

Why does having a Christmas tree up stop you focusing on someone’s birthday? Bet he’d love the tree up AND a birthday celebration!

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/11/2023 17:11

Taking a tree on down on Boxing Day is what I call miserable. Slap bang in the middle of Christmas fgs!

funbags3 · 27/11/2023 17:13

I absolutely detest the lead-up to Christmas. I did put my tree up yesterday though. I then take it down on Boxing day as by then I've had enough.

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/11/2023 18:33

That’s cos you put it up too early @funbags3 !

funbags3 · 27/11/2023 18:37

@43ontherocksporfavor You're right but even if I put it up later, I still take it down on BD. I have to do it when the mood suits and yesterday was the day.

It definitely wasn't like this when I was growing up in the 80's / 90's. Tbf Hallowe'en was way less commercialised too, more like "oh it's Hallowe'en this week!". We did dress up and do bobbing apples and some people went trick or treating. But there was no Hallowe'en wreathes or pumpkin mugs to buy from late summer onwards. I feel like nowadays autumn, and the winter weeks before Christmas are not appreciated or noticed (maybe appreciated is the wrong word as I hate the cold! "Acknowledged" is a better description) it is just all seen as the lead-up-to-Christmas-time as soon as it's midnight on the 1st November.
It's not even the people putting up trees and decorations early, there was always folk who went all-out with the lights etc very early on but that was sort of more organic; it's just I resent being made to feel like I should be in the Christmas Spirit for about 8 weeks with relentless television commercials, op-eds, Christmas partywear to buy in clothes shops, tableware, home decor, etc. etc. I bloody hate the obsession with the John Lewis ads and the Aldi ads and the M&S ads... It feels so forced and manufactured.

I also used to love the January sales, but these also start earlier and earlier 😖 it used to be A Thing to get some really nice and heavily reduced shopping from NY day onwards (Next was especially good iirc), now the sales are less dramatic and start before Christmas! Though I remember my mum, who grew up in the early 60s laughing at peoole who would camp outside Next and Debenhams and saying they were being too consumerist 🤣 so maybe being in your 40's, it's your role to criticise how things are nowadays!

LookingForABreak · 28/11/2023 00:40

I think it dilutes and diminishes the excitement of it when the decorations are put up too early and taken down too soon @Lesvaillantes you have nailed it on the head! Christmas trees go up in our city centre in early November. The "Christmas' lights are different as they represent Diwali and Channukah and probably other religious celebrations I am not aware of.

Speedweed · 28/11/2023 01:27

Hard agree @Lesvaillantes - there's something painfully sad about the rush from summer (sun! Beach! Happy!) to Halloween (Pumpkin! Spooky! Fun!) to Christmas (Lights! Decorate! Happy!), without having a pause inbetween to notice (or even appreciate) the darkening days, which is what made Christmas such a joyful contrast when it came. It's like we're trying to cut out all the dreariness but diminishing our own enjoyment in the process.

WhatNoUsername · 28/11/2023 02:19

It's literally always been in the shops since September. People gave moaned about it since the dawn of time (or for as long as I can remember anyway!).

And I'm not sure why you care what other people are doing in their own homes.

I don't celebrate christmas, but I used to live with someone who did. They used to go off to their parents on the 22nd, so the christmas cards cluttering my home got binned as soon as they were out of the door. 😛

Exactly. I think the rush between everything is exhausting. It's hard not to let it affect you when it's in your face everywhere you turn. Could do with a breather over November, then kick start Christmas on December 1st.

Yes exactly. November always gets overlooked now (apart from Rememberence Sunday)
My best friend, same age as me almost, gets very annoyed by all the Xmas stuff as it's everywhere when it's her birthday! She especially dislikes Xmas trees and Xmas decs in restaurants. It's her pet peeve

Pinkkisugarmouse · 29/11/2023 03:01

I don’t think this is new. Trees and decorations have been going up in November for as long as I can remember.

Personally I like the tree up at the end of November. For people with depression or SAD or just generally feeling low getting the decorations up can help.

Other people will see things differently to you see and celebrate Christmas differently to you because we are all different people. Just scroll past and read posts you are interested in.

Pinkkisugarmouse · 29/11/2023 03:05

I also don’t see why someone putting up a tree means they are participating in rampant consumerism. There’s no evidence to support such an idea. Perhaps they just like their decorations. It’s not like they are breaking into your house and putting yours up.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/11/2023 03:20

Yes, it's not even Advent yet!! And Advent is not Christmas. It just seems to go on and on.

39and · 29/11/2023 03:50

Anything before December is too early for decorations for us. I quite like seeing pics on social media though. I like seeing them happy and love Christmas decorations!

Gnomegnomegnome · 29/11/2023 05:36

Other people doing what they want doesn’t bother me. People do all sorts for different reasons.

We wait because we want to.
