Panettone.....just a big dry cake?

What do people do with this Italian fare?

I really want to like them but the only one I ever had, given as a gift, was very dry.

Are you supposed to toast it and add butter?

I don’t get what all the fuss is about....

Love them. Another reason to mourn Wilco, I used to treat myself to one of their mini panettone almost every time I walked through! Spread with butter, toasted or untoasted, heavenly. But not the chocolate ones, I leave those for others.

They look very inviting with the lovely packaging but the inside can be a big disappointment. I made my own a few years ago and it was much nicer

GettingStuffed · 04/11/2023 21:20

My in-laws used to give us one for Christmas. DH serves it drowned in marsala.

coldcallerbaiter · 04/11/2023 21:23

Drown in Marsala wine or make a boozy sauce with marscarpone and cocoa powder.

Panettone is, in my humble opinion, the best thing about Christmas!

I came here to say exactly this.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/11/2023 21:26

I have never had a dry panettone and I think I have eaten my body weight in panettone over the years.

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 04/11/2023 21:26

What are they, cake or bread?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/11/2023 21:31

Cake.

Tailfeather · 04/11/2023 21:34

I've never had a dry one. I think they are delicious!

Sarvanga38 · 04/11/2023 21:35

Team ‘Love It’ here, just sliced and as it is. My worst weakness at Christmas.

Never lasts long enough to get stale, so if I want one to make a B&B pudding, I have to buy extra for that purpose.

GunpowderGuido · 04/11/2023 21:42

I genuinely love them!

Big slice with a coffee in the morning. It's the relative dryness that I like!

I like panetonne, a dry one would be horrible, like stale bread, a traditional moist Italian one with lots of candied peel and vanilla is delicious. A few years ago, Heston made some Black Forest ones for Waitrose. I dont think they sold well as I was given one as a gift in my weekly shop. I viewed it with suspicion - chocolate and cherry panettone? - but eventually hacked into it in the dog days between Christmas and New Year. It was delicious. We ate it like cake with no additions.

coxesorangepippin · 04/11/2023 21:45

It's not the best

I thought pp meant tikka masala

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/11/2023 21:55

Our garden birds like it!

I ate my way through two of those. Took until April. Don't regret a thing.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 04/11/2023 22:00

Ok, so maybe not April.

End of January.

Sunsept · 04/11/2023 22:15

I don’t eat panettones as I don’t like the fruit but always buy a Pandora from Aldi, which is a plain one. Have it toasted with butter. Delicious.

BaconAndAvocado · 04/11/2023 22:57

Holy moly....what the bejeebers is a Pandora?

I assume they meant Pandoro. It's like a Pannetone without the fruit

JenniferBooth · 05/11/2023 01:02

Tesco is selling a limoncello one. I think the brand is Nomma

TWmover · 05/11/2023 08:11

The best thing I've done with panettone is Jamie Olivers bread and butter tart with dark chocolate and bitter orange. Easy dessert, lovely hot or cold.

Dammitthisisshit · 05/11/2023 10:52

Love it. But have only ever eaten it in Italy or Waitrose ones. Maybe they’re better than some others.

I had that one too, it was so good!

I always generally buy the mini ones and slather them in butter, delicious. Any leftovers get made into a bread and butter pudding. Top tier!

I have discovered a use for panettone.
you can cover it with a sheet of rolling icing, stick a Barbie in the top , stick sweets all over and voilà, a Barbie dress birthday cake in seconds.
you come unstuck when the slicing/ eating part comes, but if you use enough sweets and icing you can just gloss over that part 🤣
