Panettone.....just a big dry cake?

What do people do with this Italian fare?

I really want to like them but the only one I ever had, given as a gift, was very dry.

Are you supposed to toast it and add butter?

I don’t get what all the fuss is about....

Not a fan. I don’t even like them in bread and butter pudding as I find that too rich and prefer one made with ordinary bread, and yet they are too dry to eat plain.

They do come in lovely tins though so I happily let my family eat the panettone and I keep the tin.

Panforte on the other hand is delicious.

I bought one last Xmas from this lovely little bakery in a very quaint village. It had chocolate chips in and looked delicious.

WHAT a let down! It was vile and had a very unpleasant taste. I binned most of it.

WildFlowerBees · 04/11/2023 10:49

Try the Valentino ones, they are really moist and lovely.

JustKen · 04/11/2023 10:52

Mostly an expensive waste of money. DH's Italian relatives don't bother eating it, but will give their English relatives "genuine Italian panettone" for Christmas for a larf.

BirthdayFlower · 04/11/2023 10:55

Also dry and overrated- stollen.

rollonretirementfgs · 04/11/2023 10:57

Toasted, served with stewed fruit (maybe winter berries) and a blob of crème fraiche 👌🏼

Lifeinlists · 04/11/2023 11:02

As soon as you get it, give it to someone else. It worked for meGrin

As you can see from this thread, some people actually like it.
Not the best Italian export imo.

Catandsquirrel · 04/11/2023 11:24

Its enriched bread, not cake so yes you can toast and butter it.

SoddingWeddings · 04/11/2023 11:25

PM me for my address to send all your unwanted pannetone.

Food of the gods.

Eat in thick slices when fresh, add butter if you prefer that or just have with a cuppa. When it's a few days old, toast it and slather with salted butter.

longtompot · 04/11/2023 11:27

We love it here! Freshly opened, the scent from the bag is heavenly, and it's so soft. We keep it in the bag it comes in which helps keep it from drying out. One of the best ways to eat it imo is with thick brandy cream used as butter. Mmm!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/11/2023 11:29

I’m so glad I found this thread. A dear friend just gave us a Panettone and my heart sank, I really want to like it for his sake, but….

I shall slice it and freeze the slices, then we can have them for breakfast as if they are croissants. Phew….

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 04/11/2023 11:31

Agree it’s gross, but makes the BEST bread and butter pudding… (esp with marmelade, but that’s my fave)

Comedycook · 04/11/2023 11:32

Very overrated

youngones1 · 04/11/2023 11:39

I love panettone, one of the best things about Christmas!

mamakoukla · 04/11/2023 11:49

Panettone is not cake. Love the texture and flavour and the scents that waft out of the bag as it is unwrapped. Light and fluffy, smelling of mixed peel and spice. Perfect with coffee. But it’s not a cake and maybe that’s the problem with how it’s often (unfairly) judged. It’s a fortified sweet bread. People need to stop thinking of it as cake and just as… panettone

WeeDove · 04/11/2023 11:51

I agree, dry, tasteless, id rather have a tesco hallowe'en brack.

MonumentalLentil · 04/11/2023 11:52

Someone (Italian) used to give me panettone for Easter and Christmas. It was always dry and tough. One year someone gave me one with chestnut puree which looked more hopeful, it was still dry and tough, I ended up picking out the bits with the puree in and getting rid of the rest.

If I get one now I pass it on to someone else, or the food bank as no-one I know likes it either.

anonibubble · 04/11/2023 11:53

I do like the ones with peel in them, toasted or bread and butter pudding as the top crisps up so nicely. I also make fried eggy bread for my grandchildren. We used to have Italian friends staying who brought those with the lovely crispy outside, in the shape of doves.
But they're all just too big, I either eat more than I really want or end up throwing them away. Our local Italian restaurant gave us one last year, without peel, and we threw it away after a couple of toasted slices. It hadn't occurred to me to slice and freeze them but this is a great idea.
All in all I think I'd rather have a pack of spicy fruity buns.

Also dry and overrated- stollen.

I love stollen, though I agree some are dry and not worth eating.

Mytholmroyd · 04/11/2023 11:57

I make French toast with it or toast it and spread with lemon or passionfruit curd

BaconAndAvocado · 04/11/2023 11:59

There are evidently some strong views on panettone.
Seems like panettone is the new Marmite!

I love a slice of fruit loaf toasted slathered with butter.....is this the same vib I’d get with a slice of panettone?

(Love, love, love stollen btw)

I love it fresh but when stale / dry, French toast with bacon on the side is so good.

SorrowsPrayers · 04/11/2023 12:01

Panettone is, in my humble opinion, the best thing about Christmas!

MonumentalLentil · 04/11/2023 12:03

Fruit loaf is soft and lovely with butter. Panettone is like sweetened cardboard with butter.

BaconAndAvocado · 04/11/2023 12:04

🤣 Maybe not then!
