Panettone.....just a big dry cake?

What do people do with this Italian fare?

I really want to like them but the only one I ever had, given as a gift, was very dry.

Are you supposed to toast it and add butter?

I don’t get what all the fuss is about....

Panettone is not cake. Love the texture and flavour and the scents that waft out of the bag as it is unwrapped. Light and fluffy, smelling of mixed peel and spice. Perfect with coffee. But it’s not a cake and maybe that’s the problem with how it’s often (unfairly) judged. It’s a fortified sweet bread. People need to stop thinking of it as cake and just as… panettone

This is my take.

Pannetone should most definitely not be dry, it's light, moist and delicious. I am the only one in our house who likes it though (along with Christmas pud, Christmas cake, stollen, lebkuchen etc) so one takes a while to eat. I keep it in the bag it comes in and have thick slices with butter.

RainbowUtensils · 04/11/2023 12:06

I used a gluten free one to make tiramisu last year - that was awesome

Precipice · 04/11/2023 12:08

I like chocolate chip panettone. Lidl gets them, only as small ones, from mid October and then I eat one for breakfast and, since they can be stored unopened for months, keep them to have in the new year/spring as well.

I tried this year the chocolate sauce one that Lidl had, in a bigger one, but the chocolate sauce inside was too sweet.

I don't eat the standard panettone, because I don't enjoy raisins/sultanas.

Love the stuff - particularly the choc chip. Slightly toasted with lashings of butter 😃They don't last long in our house.

CrapBucket · 04/11/2023 12:09

I love it. Only have it with butter but now I’ve read this thread I’ll definitely have it with cream in future.

PhantomUnicorn · 04/11/2023 12:10

never had a dry one... i usually just quarter then eat them like i would any tear and share sweet bread.. but i also eat hot cross buns without butter, and chocolate chip brioche instead of sandwiches for lunch.

It is absolutely NOT cake.

For a girl or a boy?

Either! Tony or Toni as a nickname ;)

Panettone is, in my humble opinion, the best thing about Christmas!

Agreed! See also Christmas pudding.

Mince pies, however, can do one 😂 (along with trifle)

MrsBartlet · 04/11/2023 12:26

I slice off the top, hollow out the middle and stuff with vanilla ice-cream. Pop the top back on and stick the whole thing in the freezer. Take out the freezer about 15 mins before you want to serve, then cut into slices and serve with double cream. Makes a very easy and delicious christmas dessert!

Havehope21 · 04/11/2023 12:26

Try it dipped it hot chocolate - and thank me later 😋
Alternatively, use it to make french toast or bread and butter pudding (Italians look away 🤭 ).

NancyPickford · 04/11/2023 12:41

I had a colleague who used to buy everyone in the department one at Christmas, and she bought them from a posh Italian deli. Everyone would be polite but then confess privately to each other how horrible and dry they were.

twistandscream · 04/11/2023 12:49

Thick layer of mascarpone is perfect. Though it was an Iranian woman who told me to try this. I've seen loads of people in Auchan in Italy buying panettone so presumably a fair few Italians do like them. Tre Marie is the best.

Pashazade · 04/11/2023 12:52

Waitrose appear to have started selling these year round, they are lovely never dry. Big panettone are a definite risky buy though, dry they are pretty dire.

gotomomo · 04/11/2023 12:53

They shouldn't be dry, I like it myself.

BungleandGeorge · 04/11/2023 12:58

I’ve had various types including the more expensive ones and agree theyre unpleasantly dry for me. Maybe it’s less about where it’s from and more about personal taste

BungleandGeorge · 04/11/2023 13:00

This might work!

My italian SIL says nobody in her home village eats them, they just pass round the same box round to each other 😂.

😂

AgentProvocateur · 04/11/2023 13:03

Toasted with a blob of cream or ice cream and then dessert wine poured over the top…

CalamityA · 04/11/2023 13:11

I buy them and make dark chocolate and marmalade bread and butter pudding. It's so delish!

ConstitutionHill · 04/11/2023 13:37

I love them. They are moist and yeasty and best served with:

A cup of tea.
Whiskey.
Dessert wine.

Or toasted with butter.
Or in a bread (pannetonne) and butter pudding.

SoddingWeddings · 04/11/2023 14:53

I've never had a dry pannetone and I usually just buy the Lidl ones!

Foxontherun · 04/11/2023 14:56

bruffin · 04/11/2023 09:48

I love Panettone and very rarely have dry one. Pannetonne is lovely dipped in coffee! I buy the mini ones so they dont last very long once opened

Agree. A good one is soft and slightly buttery and lovely with a cup of tea or coffee 😋
