I've been a complete idiot....

I booked a Tesco delivery slot back in November, to arrive on 21st between 5 and 6pm. It included all the meat, drink and other food, and came to £258.

Waited for delivery yesterday, it got later and later and no delivery. We kept telling ourselves that the driver must be running late, loads of huge Christmas orders etc etc

No updates from Tesco, so at 9pm I rang to find out what was happening. To be told the driver had attempted delivery at 5.03pm but no one was in.

After a few minutes of arguing that we were in, that had the driver rung the bell we would have heard, etc etc, it suddenly dawned on me that I'd ordered the food to the wrong address......

We moved house 2 weeks ago. All my lovely food has been returned to the shelf of the store 70 miles away. Worst of all, DH and I are going to have to get up stupidly early and shop before we start work.

Has anyone else messed up their Christmas food shop or am I the only idiot?

I ordered a load of stuff from Sports Direct and just checked out luckily the address was my brothers from when I had sent nephew a birthday present. Good luck with the shopping x

sashh · 22/12/2022 03:19

OP

Sorry but that has made me laugh.

Have fun shopping today.

Fifipop185 · 22/12/2022 03:41

If it's any consolation OP, our local supermarkets have been relatively quiet in the last couple of days, weirdly quiet and well stocked. I hope you manage to get all you need today.

Boonata · 22/12/2022 05:19

No - it's just you 😂

Suzi888 · 22/12/2022 05:21

Oooooh no!!!!!!!! Nightmare! Sorry OP.

TheChosenTwo · 22/12/2022 05:23

Oh crap.
well it’s fair to say you’ve had a lot going on if you’ve just recently moved house. I’m presuming you don’t get charged for this delivery? (Never had this happen to me before so not sure what they would do about the cost.) how many are you feeding on Christmas Day?

Teaandcrumpets95 · 22/12/2022 05:25

I hope you apologised to the person on the phone.

Hoping the shopping is as stress free as possible, and at least you have a funny story to tell this year 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/12/2022 05:30

OH @EmmaGrundyForPM !!!!

Nearly 15 years ago, when I had a 3 month old baby and GiS databases weren't quite as good as they are today, I ordered my Christmas food shop to my street name and number.... but in a city 30 miles away.

somethingdifferenttoday · 22/12/2022 05:42

After I moved I ordered £400 worth of very physically large items to my old address 2.5hrs trip (5 hrs round trip) away. They delivered and left it all in the front garden! Had to drive there!

Rightsraptor · 22/12/2022 05:46

I do feel for you OP and I also think I'd be glad that the people at your old house weren't in as they may have just accepted the delivery..... would you then have lost your money or had to go round and remonstrate with them?

Maybe you'll discover you didn't need quite so much after all and be able to reduce your spend.

I'd also say the supermarkets have been quiet, quieter than usual for this time of year.

Hope it all works out for you and Merry Christmas.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 22/12/2022 05:48

I’m sorry to hear this. Cut yourself some slack you have had a lot going on. 👍

LyndaSnellMBE · 22/12/2022 05:54

I don’t share your political affiliation but I’m sorry this happened to you, OP

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 22/12/2022 05:58

You were lucky that the new residents didn’t take it in OP!

I don’t do online grocery shopping but wonder what Tesco would have done in that instance?

Guessing they just need to suck it up? If this happened at our house we’d likely have someone at home accept it, take it in, pack it away and start hoeing in on the basis they’d assumed I would have actually ordered it all as they take in food deliveries for me all the time. They wouldn’t notice if the con note said someone else and a different address, doubt they’d even look at it.

Same with home deliveries. People are always in and out at odd hours and not unknown for orders to arrive before the person who orders gets home. We’ve had rare occasions where people have all grabbed some and when it’s half eaten someone goes ‘who ordered it’ and we all look blankly at each other. At that point unless it’s branded pizza or burger we wouldn’t even know which home delivery Thai/Chinese/Italian/burger /food place to ring to alert them someone has missed out on their order.

Whattheladybird · 22/12/2022 06:19

If it makes you feel better, when we moved the week before Christmas it was a nightmare getting the address on our shopping ordered changed, even though we’d only moved a few minutes away. Your “slot” might not have been available if it was for your old house.

you’ll have no substititions and get to pick exactly what you want. Hope it’s ok!

Rightsraptor · 22/12/2022 06:36

The thing with moving house, or at least buying one in E&W, is that you can't be 100% sure that it will actually happen until it does. People do pull out at the last minute, removal people don't turn up ... all sorts.

So how can you safely arrange for a delivery at your new address a month before if you can't be absolutely certain you'll even be there? Maybe in this case OP could be certain, it's more of a general comment. And moving house around Christmas and new year is even more horrendous than at other times, so I'm not surprised OP got it a bit wrong.

MishaBukvic · 22/12/2022 06:54

Doh!
Hope you apologised for arguing with the customer service person . I work in a similar role and this week has been pure hell.

What does the store do with the fresh produce ? Does it go back on the shelf or veg chucked ?

HowVeryBizarre · 22/12/2022 06:57

It will be a funny story to tell in years to come but right now I would be kicking myself too.

At our Tesco the drivers have to put everything back on the shelves after their shift. It’s why they are happy to let you keep stuff a lot of the time. An utter pain after driving round trying to find houses with no visible number or name often in the dark at this time of year. £258 worth ….I dread to think how long that took.

Also poor customer services person.

Take a list Op. You’ll be fine. Weirdly 3.30pm has always been a bit quieter. I think because people assume mid afternoon will be rammed. 2pm is crazy 5.00pm is crazy but mid afternoon not so much.

Jimminycricketz · 22/12/2022 07:04

I did something a bit like this recently, and the lovely customer service agent got on to my store and managed to get the order I’d missed made available for click and collect the next day. You could always call back and see if that’s possible?

It’s so easy with everything that goes with a move to forget stuff like this!

Ah, just cross poster with you. It was done before it would have had to go back on the shelf so maybe not possible.

mynameisnotkate · 22/12/2022 07:13

We’re temporarily living elsewhere during work on our house. I ordered DDs main present at the end of Nov, and put our current (temp) address on but with our permanent address post code. Still missing in action. In a normal year there would have been time for it to go back to the shop and be redelivered with a correct address, but with the postal chaos this year that’s not going to happen. DD will be gutted. :(

Sparklfairy · 22/12/2022 07:23

Oh OP! Ice done similar, though not at Xmas. The old address was from 10 years ago and 100 miles away so I'm glad the new residents didn't take mine in!

My DM went Xmas food shopping last night and was able to get stock of almost everything she wanted (except M&S iced madeira cake which she was very disappointed about).
