I've been a complete idiot....

I booked a Tesco delivery slot back in November, to arrive on 21st between 5 and 6pm. It included all the meat, drink and other food, and came to £258.

Waited for delivery yesterday, it got later and later and no delivery. We kept telling ourselves that the driver must be running late, loads of huge Christmas orders etc etc

No updates from Tesco, so at 9pm I rang to find out what was happening. To be told the driver had attempted delivery at 5.03pm but no one was in.

After a few minutes of arguing that we were in, that had the driver rung the bell we would have heard, etc etc, it suddenly dawned on me that I'd ordered the food to the wrong address......

We moved house 2 weeks ago. All my lovely food has been returned to the shelf of the store 70 miles away. Worst of all, DH and I are going to have to get up stupidly early and shop before we start work.

Has anyone else messed up their Christmas food shop or am I the only idiot?

Our neighbours once accepted a shop that was actually for us (I think my DH got muddled doing the order then it was their teens in the house who just blindly accepted assuming their mum had ordered) so I can state categorically that yes, you would be charged once someone accepts delivery.
Luckily for us their mum came home as they were sort of unpacking at a very teenage pace so no harm done and most was still in bags but it was a bit of a pain!

lurchermummy · 22/12/2022 07:25

I went shopping at 9pm last night and it was quiet although they had run out of some things. I did this on holiday once - ordered a big shop to our holiday cottage but accidentally sent it to home 200 miles away! Luckily there was a corner shop where we could buy pasta and a jar of sauce until we could get to the proper shops!

Tangled123 · 22/12/2022 07:27

@Jimminycricketz Also depends on whether the same store delivers to the new address.

I think I had a few calls like this when I worked in online shopping, with people sending orders to second homes, parents delivering to their own instead of their child at uni etc. Usually they would just have to rebook to the correct address but, considering the time of year and how hard it is to get slots, I would ring the store for the customer concerned and asked if they would be able to help. I doubt they would be able to supply everything from the order, but they might be able to deliver something.

fancyacuppatea · 22/12/2022 07:38

I've just got back from Tesco.
Well stocked and pretty quiet.
Good luck, OP...you might find you spend less. Xmas Grin

After I moved I ordered £400 worth of very physically large items to my old address 2.5hrs trip (5 hrs round trip) away. They delivered and left it all in the front garden! Had to drive there!

😂😂😂

MrsMitford3 · 22/12/2022 08:06

When DS was at Uni he'd had a terrible day-knocked off his bike by a car and feeling utterly sorry for himself. He decided on a rare treat and ordered deliveroo but it still had his last years student flat address in the system and that's where his lovely food went!!

I also sent him something on amazon and then the next order I did (giant bag of grass seed) went to him as well.

We've all done it!!!

GraceandMolly · 22/12/2022 08:21

Jup. I got a slot for tonight. To secure it I put a few bottles of wine in it. Went on last night to amend my order with all the lovely things I would need for holidays. Clicked through the checkout and payment. All done! …only I’d not seen that the last confirmation step hadn’t gone through and all I’m receiving tonight will be 6 bottles of wine. Merry Christmas 😆

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 22/12/2022 09:47

I did this too op once. After we moved I forgot to update my address for asda. The driver called saying there is a lady here saying she's not you. Where's your new address. But he said it was too far as the next town. So had to re book🙈 I was mortified and kept apologising to the driver

RiverSkater · 22/12/2022 10:21

I had my shop ordered on a pre paid card.... yep, not enough money on it. They do ring to allow you rearrange payment but we were out and about at pantomime and then dinner out and my phone had died. Got home, charged phone and saw the message but it was too late. Heart sinking moment.

Next day had to do the huge Christmas shop in a very busy Sainsbury’s with two young children as DO was working. Hell. On. Earth.

mynameiscalypso · 22/12/2022 10:26

I very nearly did this as we also moved last week. As it is, I ordered a John Lewis parcel to our old address and they weren't able to divert it. I'm hoping they left it with the porter (our old address was a block of flats) and I'll be able to collect it. It's so easily done though.

Sunshineandflipflops · 22/12/2022 10:33

If it's any consolation I did my meat order from the butchers a while ago for delivery on 23rd Dec then on 23rd Nov while at work I received a call from the butcher saying he was at my house with my order. I had clicked the wrong month! He was very lovely and took it away and said he would re-deliver on the 23rd Dec so I'd better be in tomorrow!

Puppylucky · 22/12/2022 10:43

I did this twice with Brand Alley and H&M just after we moved both for quite expensive items. Both deliveries were accepted - thanks a lot people who bought our house - hope you enjoyed your free stuff! I now double check all addresses before I press pay.

LadyLapsang · 22/12/2022 11:21

If it makes you feel any better, I once moved house on a Friday and was away with work for the following week. One of the guys I had just met offered to drive me home at the end of the week. I directed him to my old home and when we pulled up outside I said, Oh no, I don’t live here anymore. Luckily I hadn’t moved far and he drove me to my new house.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 22/12/2022 11:26

Glad you sorted it. I did an embarrassing thing last week. I had ordered some stuff to my mum for Christmas from Amazon a few weeks ago and it has updated the primary address to hers. I saw the menopause clinic last Thursday and the doctor recommended a particular sex aid , I ordered it from Amazon you guesses to my mum's address.! The embarrassment.

@Greensleevevssnotnose Now I want to know what sex aid helps with the menopause. I feel like I might need it!

I don’t share your political affiliation but I’m sorry this happened to you, OP

Neither do I. Good luck with the shopping, @EmmaGrundyForPM .

itsgettingweird · 22/12/2022 11:52

🤣🤣🤣🤦‍♀️

I'm sure for you that wasn't funny in the slightest.

But it's actually hilarious because it took you so long to even realise!

TurtleTriplets · 22/12/2022 12:10

I have done this, had the driver to ring me saying he is outside and I am saying I am stood outside, you aren't here! wasn't my Christmas shop though luckily enough!

JauntyJinty · 22/12/2022 12:19

Yep another one who's made the same mistake so don't feel too bad about it! We were lucky in that we'd only moved a few roads over and the driver very kindly drove it round to us (which is apprenlty very much against the rules!)

As others have suggested go late or early and it shouldn't be too bad and you can pick out what you want better seeing it in person - Just try not to get carried away and spend twice as much!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/12/2022 13:41

Thanks for all the replies. I'm now sorted!

Yes, I did apologise to the lovely Customer Service guy. He said it had all been returned to store and so we won't be charged.

I don't think the new people have moved into our house yet, but if they had, and had accepted the order, I'm not sure what I'd have done as our old house is 90 minutes away.

I got up at 5.30 this morning and dragged DH to Tesco. We'd never been there before, so didn't know the layout of the shop, but got everything we needed and were home again by 7. Got shopping put away, had breakfast and I was logged on in time for an 8am meeting.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Doh!
Hope you apologised for arguing with the customer service person . I work in a similar role and this week has been pure hell.

What does the store do with the fresh produce ? Does it go back on the shelf or veg chucked ?

I apologised profusely!

Christmaspenguins · 22/12/2022 23:40

Me!
Just came across your post and it reminded me that I hadn't amended my Sainsburys order for tomorrow and now it's too late to make changes. Lots of red wine in the order, cheese, veg and crisps but bugger all else Xmas Grin looks like I'm going shopping tomorrow

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/12/2022 23:47

oh no! poor you, apparently Ocado have some last minute slots in some areas, might be worth a look.

@LyndaSnellMBE and @UrsulaTitchener I was so dozy I didn't get the comment at first and thought "how on earth did you know how I vote?"
By the way, do either of you need any firewood? I can do you a deal.
