Theft from trolley - beware

I’ve just been to Tesco, had a bottle of Baileys stolen from my trolley whilst I was putting stuff in the car. The bottle wasn’t in a bag - I’d used a self scanner so had left it outside the bags so the assistant could remove the security tag. I had other stuff loose in the trolley as i bought more than I anticipated, whilst I was putting these extra things in a bag in the boot must have been when it was taken. It wasn’t particularly busy and there was no one parked on either side, I wonder if someone was watching.
So that’s £10 disappeared just like that.
Thought I’d warn people and yes I do know that there is a cost of living crisis and a war in Ukraine.

Do you think perhaps the bottle is still inside the shop? As the assistant may have taken the alarm off and not placed it back into the trolley? You could ask the store to check cctv.

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/12/2022 14:49

Are you sure you didn’t just leave it behind at the till? Unless your spatial awareness is very poor, the chances of somebody being able to creep up on you close enough to steal something from a trolley next to you and then get away again without you even noticing they’d been there seems slim. Always worth going back to the store to ask if you left some of your shopping behind.

Pootles34 · 09/12/2022 15:09

I would have thought more likely taken as you walked through the store to the exit - someone going the other way could just put a hand out and have it?

Or, as others have said, you've just left it at the till 😁

7eleven · 09/12/2022 15:09

Much more likely you left it behind.

Timepasse · 09/12/2022 15:09

No , she removed the tag without needing to move the bottle, I’d left it so that it was easy to do that. I remember looking at it to check it was removed before I pushed my trolley away from the till area.
It was wedged in between one of my bags and a bottle of veg oil as i went back to the car. It would have been easy to lift it out whilst walking by, I was reorganising my shopping on the back seat so that stuff that didn’t need putting away immediately was all in the same bag. I was thinking about needing to sort out a car problem at the same time so a bit distracted. Glad it wasn’t my handbag.

Oh dear. How scummy of someone.

Salome61 · 09/12/2022 15:13

So sorry, I hope you find it in store, but there are so many desperate people at the moment.

Last Christmas the supermarket was heaving, I was unloading my very full trolley onto the conveyor belt and the cashier was going so fast I couldn't keep up and get down the end to pack. Someone had actually nicked a bottle of my wine off the end just after I'd paid for it, no other explanation. I didn't realise until I'd got home as I'd bought several.

barbrahunter · 09/12/2022 15:13

This has happened to me too after I'd left the checkout. In my case, the thief took a carrier bag from the top of my trolley, probably in one swoop while walking quickly. I would have loved to have seen his/her face when they looked inside to discover a load of my mum's incontinence pads 😁

DenholmElliot11 · 09/12/2022 15:14

Thanks for the warning OP. This sort of thing always happens a lot more at this time of year.

forlornlorna1 · 09/12/2022 15:15

Go back in and tell security. They might have it on camera

solania · 09/12/2022 15:16

This happened to me once with a bottle of gin!

Oblomov22 · 09/12/2022 15:17

Sorry for you OP, that is a bit shit.

Timepasse · 09/12/2022 15:38

I’m going to email the store , I might not be the only person. I posted really as a reminder to be alert , especially when it starts to get really busy, and if you’re using the self scanner to take enough bags.

They should be able to check their CCTV. So sorry - people are shits!

HihungryImMum · 09/12/2022 15:46

@barbrahunter - This made me laugh through my tears (having a bit of a shite day) I'd have loved to see their face too

@Timepasse - I'd email, or call. You may need the receipt to prove you bought it. I know from experience, I bought some baby wipes and nappies for my friend the other day as my friend had hers stolen from a big shop and the Tesco in my area often tries taking the mick

PhillySub · 09/12/2022 15:47

Give them your registration, the time and exactly where you wee parked,

CarefreeMe · 09/12/2022 16:14

Sorry but I don’t buy this at all.

If the person was desperate because they were struggling then they would have grabbed a carrier bag full of food - not the bottle of alcohol.

Be aware of putting your handbag in the trolley too, as I’ve heard this happening a few times.

Desperate people steal bread and formula. This was an opportunistic thief.

Dodecaheidyin · 09/12/2022 16:36

With any luck they'll drink it in one go and throw the fuck up, that'll learn 'em.

Menacingvern12 · 09/12/2022 16:42

This happened to me last year with a bottle of pink gin. I had stopped at the key cutting place in Morrisons. I phoned the store, they told me to come back and they replaced it. It was part of someone's present so fortunately I didn't have to spend another £20. The gin was also loose on the top of one of the smaller trollies. You should phone the store. I guess someone brazenly snatched it as the passed.

Roselilly36 · 09/12/2022 16:55

Tesco have cctv everywhere, go in the store, take your receipt and explain. Don’t bother sending an email, that will take days.

My mum in her 60's just phoned me to say she had been packing her trolley as she went round, got to the front of the store, forgot something small so walked back through the shop to get it, and someone had stolen the whole trolley Shock

She had been packing in M and S bags so someone obviously thought that she had some good shopping in there. The managers checked CCTV and it had been blocked by the display boards so someone obviously knew what they were doing.

Definitely need to be extra careful around this time, it's scary I'd never come across this before.

carefulcalculator · 09/12/2022 17:30

Sorry, that's rubbish Flowers

Desperate people steal bread and formula. This was an opportunistic thief.

Desperate people steal anything, tbh. There is 'I am desperate and I need this item urgently' and there is 'I am desperate for money so will buy things I can sell' or 'I am alcohol dependent and will steal any alcohol'. There is also 'I am a cheeky bastard and nick things if I get chance'.

Stealing is going to increase this year, as more people are skint and pissed off.
