Theft from trolley - beware

I’ve just been to Tesco, had a bottle of Baileys stolen from my trolley whilst I was putting stuff in the car. The bottle wasn’t in a bag - I’d used a self scanner so had left it outside the bags so the assistant could remove the security tag. I had other stuff loose in the trolley as i bought more than I anticipated, whilst I was putting these extra things in a bag in the boot must have been when it was taken. It wasn’t particularly busy and there was no one parked on either side, I wonder if someone was watching.
So that’s £10 disappeared just like that.
Thought I’d warn people and yes I do know that there is a cost of living crisis and a war in Ukraine.

Also I always lock my car while I take the trolley back where it belongs just in case an opportunist is lurking

Depending on where you live, I've had people try and take my shopping bags/shopping trolley off a bus before now (back in the days and in the areas where bus companies used to ask you to put them there and stopped because thefts were such an issue).

If the person was desperate because they were struggling then they would have grabbed a carrier bag full of food - not the bottle of alcohol.
They could have stolen it to sell.

I worry about this. I do my shopping at a supermarket in a high crime area, where there's poor lighting in the car park and various dodgy men always hanging around. The majority of people there don't have cars, so the car park is not packed.

I've been approached a few times for money, cigarettes etc.

It unsettles me as I am usually doing a shop on my own and somebody could easily steal my shopping. It happened to my friend (at another supermarket).

So sorry, I hope you find it in store, but there are so many desperate people at the moment.

Last Christmas the supermarket was heaving, I was unloading my very full trolley onto the conveyor belt and the cashier was going so fast I couldn't keep up and get down the end to pack. Someone had actually nicked a bottle of my wine off the end just after I'd paid for it, no other explanation. I didn't realise until I'd got home as I'd bought several.

Desperate for Baileys...? 🤔

This happened to me a while ago with a bottle of wine.Told Sainsburys as I had to go back to the store .They gave me a new bottle! Customer Service is good there (plus go there a couple of times a week at least!)

I also dont think these types are "desperate" just thieves is all

I'm not condoning the theft, but it's a really silly thing to leave your entire trolley of paid for items out of sight like that 🤦‍♀️

They weren't paid for! That's the weird thing. They must have thought my mum had bought stuff from another shop and had it with her I guess. If she had paid she would have been through the other side of the tills but for whatever reason they chose to take the trolley of unpaid for shopping. I guess it's easier or more efficient to take a trolley of stuff someone has packed? Or my mum thought maybe they thought because she had brought used M and S bags to put her shopping in maybe they thought she had nice stuff in there?

The reason she was upset is because she had a bad knee and had to go all around the store again!

From personal experience there’s no point asking them to check cctv in car park. A few months ago some f**r damaged my car in tesco car park and drove off leaving £300 of damage. I asked Tesco to check the cctv and they said there was none in the car park. I suspect there was but they didn’t want to get involved.

Oh I see. Because you said packing her bags I assumed you meant post checkout, was she doing scan as you shop then?

If they need the food, are they actually nicking it? Isn’t that what it’s for?
.

But surely everyone "needs" food?

Someone tried to steal my number plate off my car in a Sainsburys car park. I had only gone into grab a paper and a few bits so wasn’t in there long. When I came out and got to my car I noticed the plate was lopsided and a screwdriver was underneath my car.
Scary that someone was watching me.
