Theft from trolley - beware

I’ve just been to Tesco, had a bottle of Baileys stolen from my trolley whilst I was putting stuff in the car. The bottle wasn’t in a bag - I’d used a self scanner so had left it outside the bags so the assistant could remove the security tag. I had other stuff loose in the trolley as i bought more than I anticipated, whilst I was putting these extra things in a bag in the boot must have been when it was taken. It wasn’t particularly busy and there was no one parked on either side, I wonder if someone was watching.
So that’s £10 disappeared just like that.
Thought I’d warn people and yes I do know that there is a cost of living crisis and a war in Ukraine.

How awful, also to the mner who's mum has the whole trolley taken. I once bought two rotisserie chickens and had one stolen from the trolley. One the one hand is of course no big deal, but i hate the thought that dinnertime was watching me for the moment when i turned my back. That thought gives me the creeps.

The most common type of theif is actually those suffering Kleptomania, they dont want, need or even use what the steal.

Stealing for nessecity is actually really pretty rare in the UK and more common with abused children than adults.

This time of year likely does bring out all the scumbag chancers though.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 09/12/2022 18:29

It's a good warning OP, especially if distracted or maybe putting children in the car before loading the shopping in. Someone could have been watching, perhaps thieves deliberately hang around store car parks at time of year with gifts and treats being purchased.

Mammajay · 09/12/2022 18:34

Please can people not excuse theft by saying people are poor. It's rather insulting to people struggling to suggest they would go to the local supermarket and nick someone's bottle of Baileys!

nettytree · 09/12/2022 19:05

I work for tesco. How could they take the security tag off while it was still in your trolley? Go back in with your receipt, and they will check to see if you left it.

I was using the self scan - all my shopping stayed in the trolley. There’s a hand held device that you pick up when you enter the store which is linked to the Clubcard. You scan your shopping and pack it as you go round.
As I knew that the security tag would need to be removed I didn’t put the Baileys inside either of my bags, instead I left it in an accessible part of my trolley so that the assistant could easily remove the tag once my shopping had been accepted on the self service machine.

So sorry, I hope you find it in store, but there are so many desperate people at the moment.

Sorry but I don’t buy this at all.

If the person was desperate because they were struggling then they would have grabbed a carrier bag full of food - not the bottle of alcohol.

Be aware of putting your handbag in the trolley too, as I’ve heard this happening a few times.

They could sell the alcohol easier than a bag of bits of groceries #justsaying

Spliffle · 09/12/2022 19:52

I'm not surprised. I think it's only a matter of time before someone is mugged for their food as they're loading it into the car, the way prices are going.

Callipygion · 09/12/2022 20:29

Last year we had a woman nicking out of the food bank donations basket.

If they need the food, are they actually nicking it? Isn’t that what it’s for?

No. It goes to the food bank. If they need food they go there not just fill their bags. They weren’t a ‘needy’ person anyway, they were known to us (in the store) and banned. The collection point was then moved.

Interesting point. I wonder how food banks decide if someone is needy or not.

Foxandfeathers - believe you have to get a referral to a food bank, not just walk in

NCTDN · 09/12/2022 22:38

Thanks for the heads up op. Bad enough a bottle of baileys, but the the poster's mum with the whole trolley - words fail meConfused

ADifferentKindofChristmas · 09/12/2022 23:01

Well Bailey's gives me arse gravy so I am wishing similar on the thief OP.Xmas Angry

badbaduncle · 10/12/2022 07:59

I went to Centre Parcs one Xmas and whilst we were unloading the car someone stole all our M&S food. CP refused to check CCTV or help us. I am still furious 10 years later. I'd speak to the supermarket as it might be a repeat problem.

sandgrown · 10/12/2022 08:08

I am always careful with my handbag as I believe they are often stolen while people are putting shopping in the car.

Trez1510 · 10/12/2022 08:47

@sandgrown

Me too. I put my handbag in the boot first, start unloading the trolley from the side of the boot where my handbag is, move my handbag to the other side of the boot and then unload the rest of the trolley. Basically, maintaining my handbag and trolley in my vision/peripheral vision at all times.

I think, though, a determined or opportunistic thief will always win no matter how careful we are. 🙁

GrazingSheep · 10/12/2022 08:55

Was the security thing one of the msgnet ones?

My mum in her 60's just phoned me to say she had been packing her trolley as she went round, got to the front of the store, forgot something small so walked back through the shop to get it, and someone had stolen the whole trolley Shock

She had been packing in M and S bags so someone obviously thought that she had some good shopping in there. The managers checked CCTV and it had been blocked by the display boards so someone obviously knew what they were doing.

Definitely need to be extra careful around this time, it's scary I'd never come across this before.

I'm not condoning the theft, but it's a really silly thing to leave your entire trolley of paid for items out of sight like that 🤦‍♀️

oakleaffy · 10/12/2022 09:21

@Timepasse I’m always surprised when I see people leaving their 👛purse on the side when packing
I had a purse stolen from a market stall, gone in seconds
no money in it, just a travel pass for the day

hellycat · 10/12/2022 09:29

To all the people saying this doesnt happen, it happened to me in Currys carpark years ago when I was putting the baby seat in the car, an iron (!) was stolen from our trolley. There are opportunistic tea leafs everywhere, though why they wanted a fecking iron God knows. But scumbags can and will basically steal and sell anything new, to buy drugs, booze or whatever. If the carpark is on camera can you ask security to review the footage? They might recognise them it it's an habitual thief.

LikeTearsInRain · 10/12/2022 09:32

sorry to hear OP

once items are paid for you should always be diligent whether that is at a supermarket or in a designer shopping street

at least there is plenty of time to buy another

Justthisonce12 · 10/12/2022 10:49

One of the funniest sites I have ever seen in my life, was somebody robbing a frozen turkey up their jumper from Tesco’s on Christmas Eve ….. the security guard shouted after him “What are you gonna do with that lad”, he turned and replied, roast potatoes, carrots and a bit of gravy

This.

A couple of years ago on Xmas eve there were 5 handbags stolen from trolley seats/buggy handles by 10 am at our local supermarket. All in the car park as people were loading shopping into their cars. I only knew about it as the security guard was going around telling women to be careful. ☹️
