This year we have agreed just to do gifts for the children across all our families.

Usually our budget would be about £20/25 per child, always has been. We have 4 children in addition to our own to buy for (nieces/nephews).

This year BIL and SIL sent across a suggested gift for their DC. It is £50. DH asked if I thought it was a lot (yes), but he bought the gift and has said that it’s acceptable to spend more because this child is an only child. He went on to explain why the nephews/nieces on my side will have less spent on them as he’s treating them as a collective sibling unit.

Am I being a bit mad to think this is a bit off?

@Mamaneedsadrink I can assure you I don’t have 4 kids.

We have 4 kids to buy for, on top of our own.

I have 2DC.

Just clearing that one up, again 😁

I have soon to be 4 kids and my sister one. I normally tell her to get my kids a token present of about a tenner and spend about £40 on hers. Otherwise it seems a bit unfair to only but for kids when we have loads compared to her

Oh I just read it again, properly this time Blush
I think next year ditch the presents and do something fun instead with all of the kids, we started doing it a few years ago and the kids really love it Smile

OP does have 4 kids. She asked if it's fair ... they probably spend about this anyway on OP given she does have 4 kids ...
You're right though, it shouldn't be tit for tat, misses the point of Christmas and spending time with friends and family anyway. It's no wonder people get so stressed this time of the year

LITRALLY 5 posts above you OP clearly says:

'Lots of people not reading the thread. I have 2 DC.I have 3 nephews on one side (mine), and one niece on the other (DH’s). '

mam0918 · 08/12/2022 13:12

posted too soon

OP says she BUYS for 4 children that are not her own (3 nephews, 1 niece) not that she HAS 4 children.

So you expect them to spend £100 over your 4 children? But are not willing to spend £50 on their 1 child? YABU

If you are that bothered about the children all getting equal value presents then each family should buy their own kids presents "from the in laws" and simply exchange the labels to attach.

It is not right that they are expected to spend twice as much as you.

SHE DOESN'T HAVE 4 CHILDREN.

SHE DOESN'T GET £100 OF GIFTS.

That sentence is far too complicated for many on the thread.

TheTeddyBears · 08/12/2022 14:56

I think my sister does that with mine. She has 3 I have 2 I spend about £50-55 on them and she spends about £70+ on my kids. I think she feels bad coz I buy for 3 but she really shouldn't and doesn't need to buy extra.

However I think that's fair in this situation are they spending day £20 on 4 kids so £80 and have asked for a gift that is about £50. I don't see the issue unless u really can't afford it.

Totally read that wrong like many 😂
