If you do stockings and have a partner...

Do they do you a stocking?

It's just occurred to me that I do my own stocking! I have never even questioned it before, did the same in my past relationship and the women in my family did/do their own as well. I was looking at some really thoughtful, small stocking fillers for DP and realised that he doesn't do one for me- he's never done them for anyone and thinks of them as more decorative, whereas I always had a filled one so it falls on me to fill them. Does your DP fill your one, or do you do your own? If it makes any difference, our stockings are mainly filled with edibles, a pair of socks and a few small gifts (all under £10 each- a card game, a key ring, bookmark etc). They don't have big or more expensive gifts in.

We do one for each other, rather than a present so we spend a bit more (but still not crazy amounts) and get nice things. Sometimes they don't fit in the stocking, which does defeat the point a bit...

I wouldn't do my own unless it was the system pp mentioned where he did main present and I did stockings.

BooksAndHooks · 14/11/2022 21:32

We don’t do adult stockings so it’s never come up. If it was an expectation I would be speaking to them about it rather than continue filling my own.

TolkiensFallow · 14/11/2022 21:32

We do adult stockings for each other. It’s just nice to have a stocking! I wouldn’t do my own though.

Chomolungma · 14/11/2022 21:33

Stockings for children only in our house.

Fairislefandango · 14/11/2022 21:34

Only children get stockings in my family and dh's family. None of the adults do.

SilverGlassHare · 14/11/2022 21:40

DS always has a stocking with toys and sweets in, but DH and I haven’t done them for each other in previous years - they cost so much to fill with decent stuff for an adult, and I don’t want to buy a load of crap. But this year I bought 3 tiny stockings (about 8 inches long) and I’m going to fill
them with our favourite sweets and chocolates. I’ll do mine this time because it’ll be a surprise for DH and DS, but I will expect DH to do mine next time.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 14/11/2022 21:46

Yes, DH does a stocking for me.

I do them for him and the kids. Plus my Mum if we are there for Christmas, otherwise Dad does hers.

DHs family never do stockings. Unless they come here for Christmas (very rare), when they get a little one.

KenCoff · 14/11/2022 21:47

We do stockings for each other.
Everyone in our house gets a stocking, even visiting grandparents

QuietYou · 14/11/2022 22:09

A lot of my female friends do their own stockings. I don't really understand it tbh, although I didn't have stockings growing up so have no sentimentality about them, same for DH.

YorkieTheRabbit · 14/11/2022 22:12

i do our stockings, I buy bits and bobs as I see them and put them in a drawer. To be honest, I’m not sure of what’s in said stocking drawer now 😂 I’ve definitely got a colouring book and pencils as they were the last thing I bought.
DP will happily spend £££ on gifts for me but he’s not very good at small stuff like stocking fillers.

NoNamesLeft234678 · 14/11/2022 22:16

He struggles with gift buying but he does do one for me ❤

Squirrelblanket · 14/11/2022 22:18

Sort of.. we've normally bought each other a few smaller gifts and we just put those in the stockings!

AHelpfulHand · 14/11/2022 22:24

Never do them here.

we have them hung for decoration, but they’re never filled.

mainly because I never know what to put in them. I don’t want to buy stuff that will end up in the bin or just buy small stuff just for the sake of filling it up

Didn’t spot this was in Christmas section and was expecting a very different thread!

Were you hoping for something a bit saucier?

SilentNike · 14/11/2022 22:46

Yes we do them for each other with nice things that we think the other person will actually want.

I put "useful" stuff in DH's like woolly gloves, single use hand warmers, shower gel for his gym bag, sports socks, posh jam and marmalade, bottle craft beer, miniature whisky, chocolate.

Definitely no tat in this house

pinkksugarmouse · 14/11/2022 23:44

Stockings are for kids imho. Fair enough if adults want to do them but I thought they were to try and get ten minutes more sleep before the kids descend on you at stupid o’clock in the morning.

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 15/11/2022 00:03

DH and I do one for each other, stems from
when we were in our early 20s and first not going “home”’ for Christmas and it just being the two of us so wanting to have stuff to open but not having much cash. We mostly put stuff in that we need anyway - pants, socks, toothpaste, shower gel, razor blades, plus maybe some chocolates and miniatures. So really it’s a bit of a “waste”
of paper and time, but it’s nice!! Have carried it on since the DCs, who also get useful stuff plus a few more exciting things.

if you’re happy with the status quo then that’s fine, if not either no stockings for grownups or
discuss with DH.

Stockings for everyone overnighting. Started when we moved overseas and was on our own for the festivities and evolved from there. We now have a “formula” of broad categories and it’s great fun opening them together during breakfast, someone always get the apprentice elf in one department who gets a bit confused with the item and you never know if the orange is going to be edible. Upgraded versions of everyday practical things, edible, usable, do-ables, wear-ables. Some silly some luxury. I don’t do my own, it’s all surprises except for one item I organise which is a group participation thing near the top, candy whistles this year for some impromptu tunes. Because the categories aren’t complicated enough there is a very vague theme running through mine and dh’s which we try and guess all day and have got quite competitive about in a fun way.

AllThatAndMore · 15/11/2022 06:43

Yes , my husband does one for me and I do one for him. My parents were the same too. We splurge on our stockings though,
less so now that we have kids as our money goes to them now haha but when I was younger it wouldn’t be uncommon to get a main present in your stocking some years .

ProperVexed · 15/11/2022 07:15

I do the stockings for my adult children, their partners and DH.
We all sit around and open them together on Christmas morning, and no one notices or mentions that I don't have one.
One day they might!

mam0918 · 15/11/2022 11:05

I do them for myself.

My parents and DH parents didnt really do them, they where more decoration growing (well mine always had a bag of nuts in does that count... no toys and stuff though).

I started doing them when I had kids, I dont think the thought ever crossed DH mind though, like even though we all got them he was completely oblivious as if magic forces just made them.

One year I mentioned when tipsy that it was a bit shit that I always did my own, DH must have made a note of it because now every year on xmas day he hands me a wrapped small gift from under the tree along with the other gifts we are opening and looking really proud of himself says 'and heres your stocking filler' lol.

I dont think he gets it, I still make my own stocking lol.

We do them late afternoon on the before bed wind down on xmas day.

I never understood the whole use them to ignore kids and lie in thing... seems really grinch-y, I mean of all the days to get up early and spend the whole day with your kids surely Xmas is the main one.

GettingStuffed · 15/11/2022 11:09

Sort of, we don't have an actual stocking but we do small presents that we give each other when I take DH's coffee up.
