If you do stockings and have a partner...

Do they do you a stocking?

It's just occurred to me that I do my own stocking! I have never even questioned it before, did the same in my past relationship and the women in my family did/do their own as well. I was looking at some really thoughtful, small stocking fillers for DP and realised that he doesn't do one for me- he's never done them for anyone and thinks of them as more decorative, whereas I always had a filled one so it falls on me to fill them. Does your DP fill your one, or do you do your own? If it makes any difference, our stockings are mainly filled with edibles, a pair of socks and a few small gifts (all under £10 each- a card game, a key ring, bookmark etc). They don't have big or more expensive gifts in.

DS always has a stocking with toys and sweets in, but DH and I haven’t done them for each other in previous years - they cost so much to fill with decent stuff for an adult, and I don’t want to buy a load of crap. But this year I bought 3 tiny stockings (about 8 inches long) and I’m going to fill
them with our favourite sweets and chocolates. I’ll do mine this time because it’ll be a surprise for DH and DS, but I will expect DH to do mine next time.

I dont think they cost that much to fill for adults... so far this year I got DH a nice bracelet 99p in sale, a bottler of limited edition beer £2, a themed beer glass £1, hot sauce 99p, big bag of chocolate buttons £1 and going to get a few more sweets and maybe 1 more non edible thing.

overall about £10 and all will get used.

and a chocolate orange of course.

My husband does one for me and it’s amazing. I struggle to put together one as good for him. He is really good at buying presents. He’s by no means perfect but just happens to have a talent for this!

I think it should be reciprocated otherwise children only.

I've never had one and don't do them. They boggle my head a bit. Like whats the point? You get stuff like that in crackers.

If it's what you've always known then I can see how you're used to it. But definitely don't understand them adults. What purpose do they serve other than just costing more coin?

Might be something to set your bloke though if it's important to you. Won't do him any harm to make you happy and put some thoughts in.

What crackers are you getting?

There clearly better than the crap they sell here which only ever have stickers or fancy ones with the same tiny note books for borrowers, single giant paperclips, one tiddlywink frog, nail clippers, some un fathomable metal 'game' thing and a micro screwdriver set once again for borrowers lol.

Why would an adult do a stocking for themselves. I don't get it? Stockings are meant to be from Father Christmas and full of surprises. It's like an adult pretending to give themselves something from Santa. If your partner did it, fair enough, that's sweet. But why on earth would you do your own? For decoration?

Stockings arent from Santa they are a tradition in memory of saint nick... St nick who in reality only gave stocking to adult unmarried women by the way (thats WHY they are called stockings, as in womens undergarments).

mam0918 · 15/11/2022 11:24

swirlypinky · 14/11/2022 21:03

No, they're for kids. they think Father Christmas left it

Get a grip people

Consumerism madness

Or a lack of understand of history and origins for some people it seems.

Divebar2021 · 15/11/2022 11:26

Yes we do them although I’d happily stop them my DH insists. We don’t put crap / tat in them though so it’s not onerous to receive ( just to plan). In ours you’ll usually find consumables from Fortnums and Liberty ( still eating the Fortnums marmalade from last year) small box of chocolates, maybe a fancy bar of soap, a hand cream or body lotions, ground coffee, paperback book, book mark, torch , nail polish, pair of fancy socks etc. I think we probably average 9 or 10 things.

CakeCrumbs44 · 15/11/2022 12:39

We did stockings when we first got together, but not now we have kids. Yes we did them for each other - don't really see the point in doing one for yourself!

BigFatLiar · 15/11/2022 12:45

I get a stocking for Christmas morning. He just puts lots of little small value items in, bar of chocolate, Turkish delight, walnut whip, Christmas socks, little bits.

Moro93 · 15/11/2022 12:57

We do them for each other, I do them for the kids but sometimes he gives little suggestions if he sees something they'd like.
I don't know why so many people get annoyed at adults doing stockings, it's enjoyable for some people getting to fill them and getting to dig through their own. There can be very thoughtful gifts put inside them.

Neither of us had stockings growing up, they were decoration only. We now love doing them for each other, I even asked him this year if he didn't want to do it in case he was just going along with it and he was so disappointed 😂

The first year we done them, I gave him a little list of suggestions for mine as he wasn't sure but now can do it easily. If there's a particular thing I'd like though I just tell him.

bananaboats · 15/11/2022 13:30

We do stocking for each other, no tat though just smaller gifts, chocolate etc. Im not sure why you would do one for yourself?

YouBelongHere · 15/11/2022 15:30

ProperVexed · 15/11/2022 07:15

I do the stockings for my adult children, their partners and DH.
We all sit around and open them together on Christmas morning, and no one notices or mentions that I don't have one.
One day they might!

:( I hope this is the year you finally get your own stocking!

I live alone and will be putting one together for myself this year _ I made one for each of my friends last year and thought the stockings all looked so cute that I'm doing one for myself!

OP YANBU and I think you should speak to your DH about sorting you a stocking going forward!

Tomorrowisalatterday · 15/11/2022 15:36

I can't imagine doing one for myself! How weird - do you pretend to be surprised by it?

We do do stockings for each other but we don't do main presents because we are in a stage of life where we don't really need big things but it's nice to pick out some small nice mostly consumables. I usually get DH: small nice cocktail; nice sweets/chocs/fudge; photo gift - e.g key ring; cufflinks; that sort of thing.

pinkksugarmouse · 15/11/2022 15:40

“Grinch’s” 🤣🤣🤣 to have another ten minutes in bed whilst your child climbs into your bed and opens their stocking. Just so you can open your eyes and maybe even go for a really selfish (call social services) piss before heading downstairs.
Wow it’s a wonder my daughter isn’t traumatised. Now 19, sure that her parents didn’t love her when she snuggled up to them and opened her stocking. 😳
FFS do everyone a favour and bore off! 🤣

Why would you be suprised by a stocking?

They are pretty formulaic and standard (mostly sweets and small 'standard' novelties), I mean its not like your going to get an electric scooter or flatscreen tv or something equally as unheard of in it is it.

However this year I ordered myself something from royal essence so while I know its jewellery it will be a suprise.

Maybe it's about how nice your stockings are! Ours are all small thoughtful gifts - e.g. my DH chooses things for it he thinks I might like to try and vice versa. Doesn't have to be a flat screen TV to be surprising or nice

SilverGlassHare · 15/11/2022 17:19

Well, most of those things are edible. It won’t cost much for me to fill the little stockings I’ve got with sweets and chocolate, which is what I’ve planned to do. But if I were to buy non-edible things for DH, it would be expensive as I wouldn’t want a lot of plastic tat like I put in my DS’s stocking. DH doesn’t really play with toys or puzzles or things like that, and he wouldn’t want eg a new toothbrush or socks which people sometimes put in a child’s stocking. If I were to buy him the kind of things he’d actually appreciate - such as a watch, aftershave, books - it would really add up. I’d rather wrap things like that up under the tree for him.

SilverGlassHare · 15/11/2022 17:19

@mam0918 that was in reply to your post, sorry.

user1471481356 · 15/11/2022 17:23

No. He doesn’t. So I don’t get a stocking. I don’t get any presents at all.

pinkksugarmouse · 16/11/2022 23:39

My reply was of course to mam0918 and it appears she has taken onboard my suggestion and done one. 🤣🎉🍾

@ProperVexed

thats a bit sad! How old are these 'adult' children?? Are they usually so selfish & neglectful of you??

TwoTonTune · 17/11/2022 00:28

I love stockings from Father Christmas but I'm probably the most keen. I do one for myself in order to keep the Christmas universe in balance otherwise it could be assumed I'm not worthy. It makes me feel childlike.
Orange, chocolate orange, a clockwork beetle or spider that get recycled year after year, some socks and ideally something to play with and distract you before breakfast - Lego, paper aeroplane, racing hamster one year.
Kids are 17 & 15,
DH is rubbish at presents and being a husband including the year he failed to bring or do anything, apart from an elaborate work secret Santa. That hurt. so I plan and buy my own. I'm pragmatic.

TwoTonTune · 17/11/2022 00:31

And something to read - used to be a book or magazine - Xmas Viz or private eye. You then have it hanging around the house for people to randomly pick up although the phone rather dominates these days.

NCcoziwannaNC · 17/11/2022 00:38

I did mine last yr as was the 1st time we did them to suprise dh as he'd never had one even as a kid.
I did like car air freshner, nice hand cream as he gets sore hands, chocolate, socks, boxers, one of them card games like football quiz. Belt, keyring sweets.

He was made up.
So i did my own but this year he will. Altho hes not amazing at buying gifts without ideas prior. So no doubt hell just buy every idea i say. But it doesn't bother me tbh
