How long do you keep decorations up?

I'm a bit sad to see so many are taking their decorations down before 12th night, but it has made me wonder...
Are the people who decorate early the same people who get sick of the tree and take it down early?

So, how long are your tree and decorations up ? Ours went up on 17th (a week later than usual as we had COvID) and will be up until the 6th Jan, so they will have been up for 20 days.
How about your house?

Up around 14th or 15th December, usually down on 2nd Jan (after NY house guests have left or after we're back from being away over NY).

I don't think the 12th Night thing is really relevant unless you are superstitious, which I'm not! For me the festive season is over after New Year's Day.

I'll take mine down tomorrow. I'll miss them buy will keep some of the fairy lights up as they are so pretty.

duvetfan · 04/01/2022 17:54

Went up 2nd weekend in December, down on 31st December, all put away for the new year.

Decorate tree on the winter solstice and take it down on the 5th.

This is our best tree ever so I do want to keep it up longer but that's the rule (and we're shifting furniture around the room/house next week so need it gone)

Always interesting to read of the ‘rules’ (prefer to call them customs) different families follow. Ours have evolved over the years and have different aspects of my and DH’s backgrounds. Sinterklaas was a huge part of Christmas when I was little and we have carried on the traditions with our DC’s.

If 12th night is on a weekend, I will take down then... otherwise has to be down before return to work (so took down last night). Put them up around solstice.

We put ours up on Dec 18th, took them all down Dec 30th. Just the 2 of us now, but we put them up for the GC and let them decorate the tree

so, effectively you have had 12 days of Christmas..
languagelover96 · 05/01/2022 10:18

Ours came down three days before.

BSJohnson · 05/01/2022 15:58

Struggling to force myself to take them down today. They’re too pretty!

stargirl1701 · 05/01/2022 16:20

Tree came down this afternoon. We will leave the crib scene up until Candlemas.

GodspeedJune · 05/01/2022 22:16

I meant to take mine down today but ran out of time. Have I made a faux pas?

ImInStealthMode · 05/01/2022 22:17

I'd planned to take the tree down on the 2nd, but somehow it's still here. Work tomorrow and then family coming for dinner so it'll come down either Friday night or Saturday. All the other Christmas bits and pieces have been taken down already though.

foxgoosefinch · 06/01/2022 01:16

Anyone else risking superstition and keeping theirs up a bit longer? MIL couldn't come for Christmas as we tested positive, so she's coming for a faux Christmas dinner on Saturday. DP wants to keep it up but I've booked a charity tree collection. Will we have terrible luck if we don't take it down tomorrow....? Shock Grin

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 06/01/2022 02:07

We took ours down on Twelfth Night in the afternoon.

All vacuumed, dusted and bins out. Halo

lollipoprainbow · 06/01/2022 07:27

@foxgoosefinch I posted on another thread about this as I'm very superstitious and haven't taken mine down yet!! I plan to do at the weekend when I have more time and can clean as well. I took a few bits of tinsel down yesterday but mostly they still up. My tree can't be taken for recycling until next weekend so plan to leave it up with just the lights on Hmm

Yes, we'll have some up through to Candlemas and our gorgeous three kings made their first appearance today. I'm not superstitious at all though - load of bollocks.

It doesn’t make any difference when you take them down - everyone has their own traditions. Some Boxing Day, some NY Day and some later.
Once Christmas is over I like everything down and put away to have a tidy house for the new year.

LillianGish · 06/01/2022 16:23

Up by December 21, down for 12th night. Living in France so just made a galette to celebrate epiphany (which is quite big here). Lots of twinkly lights up until Candlemas (the only way to get through dark days of start of the year). I think the OP is right - the earlier you put them up, the earlier you want to take them down. My lights go up for Advent, but I like to wait as long as poss before getting my tree.

JanuaryBluehoo · 07/01/2022 21:55

Up mid December, down when I feel like it, certainly not any time soon!

poolblue · 16/01/2022 19:23

So I've just taken down our Xmas tree Smile just loved having it twinkling in the corner of the room but finally decided it was time. Everything now in the loft until early December.
