How long do you keep decorations up?

I'm a bit sad to see so many are taking their decorations down before 12th night, but it has made me wonder...
Are the people who decorate early the same people who get sick of the tree and take it down early?

So, how long are your tree and decorations up ? Ours went up on 17th (a week later than usual as we had COvID) and will be up until the 6th Jan, so they will have been up for 20 days.
How about your house?

@NoWordForFluffy definitely not niche. Pringles,Dove, Lynx, Avon, Clarins …

BettyfromBristol · 02/01/2022 20:49

Up on the 20th, down on NYD. We have hardly any decorations though and they are more Yule than Christmas. My cousin used to do 24 to 26 December, now marginally longer for the grandchildren.

DinosaurOfFire · 02/01/2022 20:54

Ours went up late this year- week before Christmas, whereas usually we put them up the first weekend in December. They stay up till mid January usually but I have been known to keep the odd bit out for longer! We celebrate Orthodox Christmas on the 7th Jan as well as "normal" Christmas on the 25th Dec so they are always up till at least the 8th January.

Now. I've not seen any of those. Probably as I don't give a shit about Twelfth Night. And it's just marketing for some companies!

Peasweet · 02/01/2022 20:58

Outside lights up on 1st December. Decorations and tree up on Saturday 11th. All will come down on 5th January. Will then put coloured lights in porch until Candlemas, 2nd Feb.
Love lights through dark January.

wineandchocolateforthewin · 02/01/2022 20:59

Mine come down before work/school returns, don't want that on my to do list alongside other household tasks

DaisyWaldron · 02/01/2022 21:00

They go up just before the winter solstice. I take down the tree and the main decorations for twelfth night, but leave the door wreath and some sparkly lights and small things until Candlemas at the start of February.

pradavilla · 02/01/2022 21:01

Ours went up 5th Dec. One tree was taken down a few days ago and second tree and outside decorations taken down today.

I hate this old traditional thing of 12days and I've never went by that. I go by when we have time to do it which is usually at the wkend and taken down before we go bk to work.

PARunnerGirl · 02/01/2022 21:03

Up on 14th December and completely de-Christmassed on Boxing Day usually, maybe the day after. I don’t know why but I feel like there is something quite depressing and melancholy about Christmas decorations and lights after Christmas! I completely accept this is something a bit unusual about me! I definitely couldn’t come downstairs on New Years Day to start a fresh, lnew year looking at a Christmas tree and Santa decorations!

irishfarmer · 02/01/2022 21:06

Normally 8th Dec - 6th Jan but had to take them down on St Stephens day this year, as we needed to do some unplanned work on the house! I was sad taking them down so early

DaisyWaldron · 02/01/2022 21:08

The 12 day calendars are mostly used as shorter advent calendars, do for the 12 days before Christmas.

I celebrate Epiphany, so for me taking down decorations for the new year would feel weird, like stopping half way through a celebration. I'm still doing Christmas things, and moving the wise men all over the house, and digging out my epiphany cake stuff and am in no way ready to end the fun yet.

Norugratsatall · 02/01/2022 21:08

Up on 5 Dec down today. Would've left tree up till twelfth night but it was looking decidedly droopy and dehydrated so had to go really. Have left some fairy lights up in various places to offset the gloom of Jan and Feb.

ColleysMill · 02/01/2022 21:10

Went up on the 12th Dec and came down today.

No time to do it when kids back at school or back at work.

Dannii2531 · 02/01/2022 21:19

Mine stay up 25 days. They go up on 13th December and are taken down on 6th January.

Angel2702 · 02/01/2022 21:21

Ours have always come down the day after Boxing Day. We need the space, time to put everything away and clean before back to work and I prefer a clean clear house for New Year.

LemonMuffins · 02/01/2022 21:23

Took mine down today but they went up on Dec 01. Tree is now naked but being collected next weekend.

Spreadingtheword · 02/01/2022 21:23

Used to leave them up until mid-jan.

Since DD was born on 31st December a couple years ago we now take them down by the 30th December as it’s pants having a birthday so close to Christmas anyway, let alone having everything surrounding you be Christmas themed on your birthday. So we take them down so they’re not associated.

Also, Christmas wrapping for someone birthday in Dec/Jan is a dick moveAngry

Marimaur · 02/01/2022 21:23

I put it up around 6th Dec, comes down on the 6th Jan

Thesearmsofmine · 02/01/2022 21:25

Ours went up at the start of December and most will come down on the 12th night(we might take the extra bits down tomorrow). Tempted to keep some fairy lights up as it feels so cosy and January is so dreary,

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2022 21:29

We don't put ours up until about a week before Christmas. They usually stay until 12th Night, but this year I'll take the tree down tomorrow. I think I'll leave some lights up for January as they are pretty and cheerful.

Mum2jenny · 02/01/2022 21:32

Till they annoy me and then there are taken down. But I only tend to put them up in the 7 days before Xmas.

Nidan2Sandan · 02/01/2022 21:33

They went up the last weekend of November and came down today. We like to have the house back to business as usual by the time school/work starts and that is 4th Jan here.

Jooox · 02/01/2022 21:37

It seems to be a thing on here to keep them up for as short a time as possible. I’m surprised no one has said 00:01 25/12 - 00:01 26/12.

I usually put mine up mid November and take them down mid January when I’ve finished the table chocolates Xmas Grin

Pyracanth · 02/01/2022 21:40

Decs plus tree went up 21st Dec, tree came down 28th Dec as needles were dropping everywhere, rest of decs down on 6th Jan. I feel like I want to relax and enjoy them for a few days now that the social gatherings are out of the way!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 02/01/2022 21:44

Up on 4th Dec (would have been 28th but DP wanted his DD here and that wasn't his weekend with her). Still up now. Take them down as close to 12th night as possible. This year they are coming down on the evening of the 4th. I'm off on the 5th, but the children are back to school as is DP, and it is a 2 man job to get them back in the loft now (they used to be kept in the shed, but now we have the loft boarded it makes more sense to go up there). So 4th it has to be! I work through Christmas, so our celebrations are spread out. Eg my dad visited 27th/28th, visited my mum on 1st, DP mum visiting 3rd.... so we wouldn't want the decs down when we are still having festive visits. We had a 2nd Christmas dinner today (although it was harder as none of the Christmas food was avaliable!) as SD had Christmas Dinner at her mums, so we did another with her today. So for us it is always going to be up early, down late as possible, but before school returns.
One year (2019) DP took them down while I was at work on NYE. I actually cried. I was absolutely devastated. It felt like my Christmas had been stolen from me before it was finished! I will never forgive him for it. He was mortified though, so I know he will never repeat it! He had a list of things to do before he went back to school (teacher), all of which involved leaving the house. The only one that didn't, was the Christmas decs. However I had been explicit in telling him which day they were to come down. He couldn't be arsed to leave the house to do his other jobs, so he decided to switch the days around in which things were done. I arrived home after a long day at work on NYE to a bare house, and just sobbed! We've still got so much festive food, chocs, drinks, nibbles... it feels wrong to be eating it without the festive background!
