How long do you keep decorations up?

I'm a bit sad to see so many are taking their decorations down before 12th night, but it has made me wonder...
Are the people who decorate early the same people who get sick of the tree and take it down early?

So, how long are your tree and decorations up ? Ours went up on 17th (a week later than usual as we had COvID) and will be up until the 6th Jan, so they will have been up for 20 days.
How about your house?

Well obviously large swathes of people do Christmas differently/don't do Christmas at all etc. I still find it interesting to chat about how and why people like different things!

I personally would find regarding Christmas as over on boxing day as deeply strange, but that doesn't mean I care the anyone else does.

I do find it odd that people bring up 'having to work' during the 12 days as a reason not to consider it the Christmas, yet everyone works December up until Christmas too, and I've never heard that as a reason not to get decorations out?

stingofthebutterfly · 03/01/2022 14:35

Took all mine down yesterday. It'd feel a bit weird to still have the decorations up when the kids go back to school tomorrow.

beautifullymad · 03/01/2022 15:24

Ours go up two weeks before Christmas as down on the 2nd January ready to start afresh.

Well my decorations went up on a weekend because I was off, I took my time doing it with the family. We all return to work tomorrow and won't have a day off until after the 6th, and call me strange but I'm not really wanting to get home at 7pm and start taking decorations down.

I mostly don’t care what other people do about their Christmas trees.

But I do find it tedious to see several threads every year started by people who’ve had decorations up since Halloween finished complaining about them and saying they’re fed up and desperate to get them down first thing on Boxing Day.

Fair enough, put your decorations up really early. And take them down whenever you like. But don’t start whinging about them online because you’re bored on them by Christmas. It’s just annoying.

Longbarn5 · 03/01/2022 17:12

Ours went up a fortnight before Christmas and came down New Years Eve, finishing New Years Day. To be honest it is mostly to do with time for us. Back to work tomorrow and want to get the house cleared up by then, otherwise I would struggle to find time. We do have a lot of decs and so putting everything away takes a long time.

Quornflakegirl · 03/01/2022 17:13

Up on 10th of December and down by the 29th, I couldn’t handle anymore than that.

You don't understand that free time being limited affects when / how / where people do things? If you have to squeeze things into spare time, then that dictates a huge amount of the above.
germsandcoffee · 03/01/2022 17:18

I'm not a lover of Christmas decorations but my partner is so we compromise 🤷‍♀️
He can put them up the beginning of December if I can take them down New Year's Eve.
Our daughter is only 7 so loves the build up to Christmas but our sons autistic and to him once Santa's been Christmas is finished so he likes them all put away like me 🤣

Parker231 · 03/01/2022 17:20

Decorations and tree up the week before Christmas and down on New Years Eve although this year it was Boxing Day as we were going away. Have never wanted them up when Christmas is over. Like a fresh start for the New Year.

MsAgnesDiPesto · 03/01/2022 17:24

Ours went up on 16 December, so not at all early, and have come down today, ready for going back to work. I like to be able to clean and get tidy before the slog starts again. We will keep them up till Twelfth Night if we are on leave still then, but otherwise, it's at our convenience.

I'm enjoying being able to reach to shut the curtains again!

HeyUpits2022 · 03/01/2022 17:41

Ours went up early this year (1st Sunday in Advent) and came down yesterday. Normally I would take them down on twelfth night, but the timings were awkward.

I am back to work tomorrow, DD is back to school on Wednesday, and DH is on nights so yesterday was the most practical day.

Iamanicepersonreally · 03/01/2022 17:44

I usually put it up about a week before Christmas and take it down at the end of December. It's still up now though and it looks so pretty, I don't want to take it down

chipshopElvis · 03/01/2022 17:45

I would like to leave mine until the Epiphany but won't have time on a week day so they have come down today.

DyingForACuppa · 03/01/2022 17:48

Sorry! I must have worded my comment spectacularly badly if that's the meaning you took from it.

Obviously if you work weekdays doing things the nearest weekend etc makes sense if you have hours worth of decorations to put up or down (I don't have time for that personally!).

I meant people say stuff along the lines of 'I can't abide the decorations still being up when I'm back at work/kids at school', when they've had the decorations up for weeks before Christmas when they were also at work/school but somehow it wasn't a problem then.

Again, do what you want, it's just a perspective I find odd!

NoWordForFluffy · 03/01/2022 17:53

It's not about them being up at that time - for me - it's finding time to put them up / take them down / do other Christmassy stuff etc. That's how I read people saying they want them down before going back to work; it's timings, not them being up.

iatetoomuchcheese · 03/01/2022 18:05

Decs up on the 11th. Tree went down today (a few other bits packed away 2 days ago). I often take it all down between Christmas and New Year but this year I loved my tree so it stayed past new year. I think if depends how cluttered the house feels and when you have the time to pack it all away. It takes me a few hours and I need a second pair of hands to help me put it in the loft - no time to do that when we are back at work.

Crabwoman · 03/01/2022 18:54

Up the weekend before my birthday which is mid December.

Down the weekend before we go back to work school.

My DD's birthday is the 12th night, so they are taken down before then. She's so over Christmas by that point, but I keep some lights up for her birthday.

Squirrelblanket · 03/01/2022 19:10

We put ours up the last weekend in November and take them down in the days between Christmas and New Year. This year they came down on 29 December.

It's nothing to do with being sick of them though. I just like a clean house for new year.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 03/01/2022 20:57

I'm not sure I understand the whole clean house thing. I still clean mine with the decorations up? Do you all mean clutter rather than actual cleaning?

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 03/01/2022 21:45

Mine came down yesterday, I normally do them on new years day, it's easier than waiting until 12th night due to work. Love, love , love them and the house is now so bare, boring and its lost its cosiness. Feels like the bleak mid winter again! Granted I have more space but I need something to jazz my front room up again

Fink · 03/01/2022 21:54

Decorations and tree come down on Epiphany and presents for children are staggered so they get at least one every day until 6th January (we don't do Father Christmas). They go up gradually between mid December and Christmas Eve.

Sometimes we don't have time on 6th to take everything down so it might stay up till the weekend, but the 6th is the earliest it will start to be taken down.

Mine go up the weekend before Christmas and come down the day before I go back to work. I work through to Christmas Eve and then usually at least one day between Christmas and New Year depending on how the Bank Holidays fall.

However, it's different having decorations up during advent when you are looking forward to Christmas, and between Christmas/New Year when even if you are working, you still have some holidays to look forward to; from when it's all over for you and you have nothing but work for weeks to come, even though it's still officially Christmas for a few more days.

Onionbhajisandwich · 04/01/2022 17:19

I put ours up on 27th November and took it down on 2nd Jan. It’s all decided around what’s planned in November / December and when I’m back at work after Christmas. If I didn’t work I’d put the tree up mid November and take it down on the 12th night.

cryingcatmeme · 04/01/2022 17:36

Up on the first weekend of December and down on the twelfth night.
