Presents left discarded for days

The pile of presents that SIL opened on Xmas day are still laying strewn where they were opened on Xmas day, untouched. I just can't get my head around the lack of care or organisation.
All my presents are sorted into a neat pile as they are opened, and then put into a bag or stored out of the way.
After 24h of her books, biscuits etc being stood on by excited children, I broke... and pushed them all together out of the way under the tree. They are still there, and clearly won't be moved until SIL leaves. AIBU to think people should take a bit more responsibility and care for their gifts?

We all have decorated cardboard boxes for out presents for this very reason.
I like to keep my presents in one place for a while for easier gloating and admiring ❤️😍Xmas Grin

YANBU. Left in a pile to be admired would be one thing, but strewn around randomly suggests she doesn't care about the gifts very much.

WakeUpLockie · 28/12/2021 11:27

YANBU my sister and her family left all their new presents cluttering up the living room until they left this morning. Annoying space-wise and also uncaring of their new possessions. Not my house so I didn’t say anything but did pointedly tidy our stuff away upstairs with a lot of flourish 😄

Ylvamoon · 28/12/2021 11:28

Just tell her to move them as they get trampled on, you need to clean, ... whatever. If she isn't responding, they would be moved out of sight! But then I can be pretty mean if someone else is messing up my home!!

IncompleteSenten · 28/12/2021 11:58

I'd have left them to get trampled on. If she doesn't give a shit then fuck her.

Whitefire · 28/12/2021 12:03

Who's house is it?

TwinkleTwinkleLittleStarFightr · 28/12/2021 12:10

Possibly she is like me and gets overwhelmed by new things. I do tidy mine into a pile and put them to one side though, but I know it upsets people if I don’t either start using them or put them properly away straight away.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 28/12/2021 12:57

Did you tell her where you'd like her to put them? It's difficult in someone else's house when you don't know what their Christmas routine is. Some people would be annoyed at kids tramping up and downstairs to get another toy every 5 mins.

Maybe there's just too many presents - my present pile is about 12 inches cubed because it's books and chocolate!

Grandmotherschina · 28/12/2021 12:59

Jesus. Presume she’s staying at yours? Where is she supposed to tidy them away to?

shoofly · 28/12/2021 13:02

My Dad used to nag us on Christmas day to tidy presents away in our bedroom. It always felt annoying and immensely irritating. Our house it's now tidied into neat piles and put away gradually over a few days.
I can see how annoying it would be if people were walking over stuff and if you had a few guests. I think shoving them diplomatically into a pile and under the tree is probably the best option.

Fairylights25 · 28/12/2021 13:08

The fact this is annoying you so much probably means it is time for her to pack and leave before you get the bin bags out Grin

You are deserve a medal for putting it up with it for this long! My tree and presents and every last scrap of Christmas is already in the attic, thank you notes now being written!

Time for her to go home

My inlaws took their presents up to the room they were sleeping in at ours house. My dad left his scattered on the floor until I had a word, then he said I was ‘bullying him’ 🙄

This is genius and I'm stealing the idea for next year.
Nishkin · 28/12/2021 13:25

@Trumpton please can I steal your box idea -genius

DueyCheatemAndHow · 28/12/2021 13:32

@Trumpton we never had stocking when we were kids we had decorated cardboard boxes too! It was great, you could tidy up your presents when we had guests but didn't have to put them away. I've converted DH now we have our own children

Trumpton · 28/12/2021 13:48

When our children were small it was part of the run up to Christmas that they were given a large empty box with paper, tinsel and baubles to decorate their own box.

gogohm · 28/12/2021 13:50

Mum gives us gift bags each year for this very reason. (I folded them before leaving and handed them back for reuse)

WeaninWoes · 28/12/2021 13:52

Rude if at your house. How old is she?

OP, I mean this kindly but... you sound like a pain in the arse!

wetotter · 28/12/2021 13:56

The boxes is a great idea!

Some people just won't 'see' the issue because it's not something that mattered in their own home (I bet a lot of Christmas family strife is between in-laws for that reason).

Mu only hard rule is that anything and everything containing chocolate or grapes/raisins must be put out of reach of the dog immediately and stay out of reach at all times. Strewing of other stuff I'd barely notice, and if something got broken because it was trodden on, it would be the fault of the person who left it lying around, not Bigfoot

How much longer is she there for? Can you grit your teeth that long?

OverTheRubicon · 28/12/2021 14:32

This isn't one of those 'different households' things like whether you open presents as soon as you wake up, or watch the Queen's speech, this is really disrespectful to the people who've saved up and carefully bought you presents, as well as to your hosts. I'd be pissed off and asking her to tidy up.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/12/2021 15:03

I didn't have guests staying over so it's a bit different, but I had a large bag (the sturdy paper/card type) for each person to take home or take up to their bedroom at the end.

Thelovelyflower · 28/12/2021 15:05

I gave our guests a big bag to put their presents in and then I took them up to their rooms after present opening ;)
