Are there shortages?

I was just wondering if anyone has actually noticed shortages, as were predicted earlier in the year?

I've noticed that a lot of stuff seems to be out of stock in our Argos, and not available for delivery. But the same stuff is available C&C from Smyths or Entertainer, so is it just that Argos is a bit rubbish? Annoyingly I live really close to Argos but nowhere near the other toy retailers!

Argos has always been rubbish. Even if they have stock it’s normally more expensive

senorafridgidaire · 13/12/2021 07:32

@RedSquirrelsAreAwesome apparently the Walkers shortage is to do with some kind of IT glitch at their main factory. I've been struggling to get Wotsits for ages round here!

@Opal8 I didn’t vote for Brexit I’m sure half the people on this chat didn’t so saying “you were warned” means nothing. I didn’t want it but it’s done now and we can’t go back what gets me is the public just meekly plod along pretending they can’t see the changes in their shops and choice. Then you get the whole well it’s a good thing consumerism is evil buy knitted toys etc.
I’d prefer balance less consumerism maybe but I’d like the choice to buy things still.
I don’t think those that vote Brexit wanted empty aisles no point being divisive now.
My DF voted Brexit do I gloat that he can’t get his old cat the cat food it needs? No.

I need a new condensing tumble drier, Currys only have the v expensive Germany models in stock, with long delivery times.

Generally, i was amazed how much stuff they didn't have in stock.

Fortunately, local euronics have what i want, 1st world problems!

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 13/12/2021 08:19

There's still a crisp shortage

GrandDuchessRomanov · 13/12/2021 08:58

Well Argo have been great for me.

Ordered the new fitbit charge 5 for DH at 23:30 on Saturday night, collected it just over 12 hours later yesterday.

Best of all there was £40 off it, plus cashback, making it considerably cheaper than many other places.

I can't fault them.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 13/12/2021 08:59

Argos obviously!

@ilovebagpuss

I have found that the Christmas aisles in places like supermarkets and M&S are very small. The usual cards and wrapping and generic gifts type stuff. Can’t find nice cards anywhere they are all soulless and dull unless you spend a small fortune in paperchase say. I also find in Wilko the usually tons of choice chocolates aisle was about 3 shelves. So there is stock but not much choice. My local Sainsbury’s was also looking sparse again this week in the meat and deli aisles. Primark at the weekend hardly any Christmas bits no cheapy jewellery earring sets etc and I mean nothing that section has gone. No fluffy socks or Xmas PJ’s. Yes we can survive without all this but that’s not the point I’m sick of people saying there are no changes when there clearly are many to choice and abundance.
I can see how this would be frustrating and disappointing but I don’t think it’s such a bad thing that there’ll be less waste being sent to landfill sites this year.

@LondonGrub

Where are all the salt and vinegar crisps?????
In my house. We buy multipacks but no one here likes S&V crisps so they just accumulate.
LondonGrub · 13/12/2021 09:48

I'll pm you my address. Thanks 🤪😁

MintyCedric · 13/12/2021 09:56

Argos has been crap since the beginning of the pandemic.

I must admit I've got lucky with a few things recently but for over a year I couldn't get anything I needed locally or delivered.

A596881B · 13/12/2021 10:18

I work in retail and the crisp shortage is due to an IT glitch at the Walkers factory a few weeks ago, apparently it meant they were working at 10% capacity. Christmas tree chocolates will start disappearing (if they haven’t already) because it has a limited life span … once Christmas is over nobody will be buying it! Literally everything else we have in stock and the only delays we currently have is actually getting on the shelves because loads of staff are off with this blasted cold bug that’s doing the rounds.

A596881B · 13/12/2021 10:31

I know that the Supermarket chain I work for are actually ordering less Christmas stock in. The days of buying all your Christmas food half price on Christmas Eve are gone, we would get hoards of people in a hour before closing snapping up the bargains (not knocking it) but supermarkets are tightening their belts too and with sophisticated ordering and consumer purchasing forecasts are adjusting how much is actually in store ….. basically what’s on the shelves reflects what is actually going to be bought.

PraiseTheSunshine · 13/12/2021 10:32

Argos never seem to have anything that I want in stock, I haven't noticed shortages elsewhere though.

This is a step in the right direction
iheartredsquirrels · 13/12/2021 10:51

I hate to be a kill joy but come on, a lot of this is a first world problem.
I'm grateful to live in a safe country and not a war zone. Christmas is fun but let's keep it in prespective.

Fairylights25 · 13/12/2021 11:19

No the shelves are creaking here. Nothing missing.
The biggest problem is resisting buying it all.

witsendeverytime · 13/12/2021 11:24

My son kept track of the availability of a PS5 console on several sites which would say when they had any. He got on a waiting list at his nearest GAME store but still ended up going in daily (luckily around the corner from work) and bagged one. Other than that haven't noticed any shortages but my kids are teens and so beyond the latest toy craze.

JustWonderingIfYou · 13/12/2021 11:45

Argos has been shit since sainsburys bought it a couple of years ago.

No huge food shortages, of course some things sell out, that always happened but then they are restocked the next day. Not had any problems getting any of the things mentioned, only thing I can't get hold off is a good truffled brie.

thevassal · 13/12/2021 11:55

I remember reading in September that there would be NO PIGS IN BLANKETS available anywhere this Christmas due to shortages in factories being able to prepare them -aldi now has 11 different types advertised in their christmas leaflet plus PIB pizza and quiche....

BiddyPop · 13/12/2021 12:01

Very little wrapping paper anywhere, M&S has a VERY small range this year and very low stock of what they have.

In the supermarket:
Brown sugar (light and dark)
Organic milk
Natural yoghurt, creme fraiche
Mange tout
Cos or romaine lettuce
Lower stocks of various meats than usual - hard to get lamb chops or any decent sized joints of lamb/beef/pork, the rashers I like are constantly OOS past couple of months
Easi cook rice, and certain pasta shapes
Pasta sauces that we like are no longer stocked, but there are other options there (just not to our taste), also shortage of tinned tomatoes
Coke/Coke zero
Mint imperials and bags of decent jellies

I'm finding a lot of brands changing - but that we can find other items as an alternative.

But there are definite holes in shelves/fridges at times.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 13/12/2021 12:07

I'm a retail manager. Non food though

We are noticing shortages due to supply issues

Some warehouses are striking over pay
Still have haulage problems
Staff shortages due to illness/covid/isolating
Smaller suppliers have gone out of business leaving vendor issues

All adds up

This means I will have to make a special trip to get it First World Problems

dontcallmelen · 13/12/2021 13:05

Long delays on many electrical appliances/reduced choice.
Furniture has very long delivery times from many stores.
Yy cards & wrapping paper, my local Sainsbury’s often have very little bread or milk,/fresh veg/fruit large gaps in the cleaning aisle also.
