Are there shortages?

I was just wondering if anyone has actually noticed shortages, as were predicted earlier in the year?

I've noticed that a lot of stuff seems to be out of stock in our Argos, and not available for delivery. But the same stuff is available C&C from Smyths or Entertainer, so is it just that Argos is a bit rubbish? Annoyingly I live really close to Argos but nowhere near the other toy retailers!

I have found that the Christmas aisles in places like supermarkets and M&S are very small. The usual cards and wrapping and generic gifts type stuff.
Can’t find nice cards anywhere they are all soulless and dull unless you spend a small fortune in paperchase say.
I also find in Wilko the usually tons of choice chocolates aisle was about 3 shelves. So there is stock but not much choice. My local Sainsbury’s was also looking sparse again this week in the meat and deli aisles.
Primark at the weekend hardly any Christmas bits no cheapy jewellery earring sets etc and I mean nothing that section has gone. No fluffy socks or Xmas PJ’s.
Yes we can survive without all this but that’s not the point I’m sick of people saying there are no changes when there clearly are many to choice and abundance.

@MissConductUS

Cream cheese is in short supply in New York for some reason. I managed to buy some today anyway. I need it for a Christmas mashed potatoes recipe.

That's interesting.
I was just at the store and bought some but I'm in Texas. There were loads. I wonder why there's a shortage where you are 🤔
My sister is in South Carolina and she hasn't been able to find "Flaming Hot Cheetos" for months.

Twopenny · 12/12/2021 21:55

I've not noticed any shortages here. Stock levels seem pretty normal - if something's missing in one supermarket, it's available in another in walking distance.

We picked up some Christmas bits ahead of time in anticipation that things might run out quicker than usual...guess it remains to be seen if that'll come to pass.

TuftyMarmoset · 12/12/2021 21:58

I haven’t noticed any general issues but I’m not convinced Argos actually sells anything anymore, as nothing has been in stock for the past few years!

NotAshamedToFancyTheGrinch · 12/12/2021 22:06

Argos has been shit for years, it’s not a recent thing for them to have nothing in stock.
I’m in the north of Scotland and I haven’t seen any shortages in a while. There was a shortage of fizzy drinks for a few weeks or months and I had to change cat food brand because it was consistently out of stock but shops seem normal now.

LondonGrub · 12/12/2021 22:12

Where are all the salt and vinegar crisps?????

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 12/12/2021 22:17

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

I haven't been able to get imperial leather soap for months
We buy it routinely in our mini Sainsbury’s. Definitely seems like any shortages are regional/patchy!
TuftyMarmoset · 12/12/2021 22:19

@LondonGrub I got some in Lidl recently (deluxe ones, big sharing bag)

goingback · 12/12/2021 22:19

cant believe people cant find any cola in any supermarket for weeks..

Riverlee · 12/12/2021 22:20

@ilovebagpuss

I’ve noticed the same. There doesn’t seem to be the usual array of Christmas food around this year, apart from the essentials. Ie. Fewer Christmas themed cakes, ice cream, desserts etc.

My online supermarket has sold out of Christmas tree chocolate.

Went to a local outlet centre last week and was hoping to pick up stocking fillers, Christmas gifts etc. my friend and both noticed they were missing.

The best Christmas selection I’ve seen recently was in a garden centre.

Brexit:
Less choice
More expensive
You were warned 🤷‍♀️
Sadly, covid is a gift to brexshitters as they will blame brexit issues (which have been predicted and well documented for years..) on covid.
It'll be like the 1970s again...enjoy!

Opal8 · 12/12/2021 22:28

But to answer ops specific question:
I cannot find apple and mango J20, chocolate tree chocolates, pasta sauce or my sons favourite frozen pizzas anywhere

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 12/12/2021 22:36

@LondonGrub

Where are all the salt and vinegar crisps?????
In hell where they belong. Sorry
ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 12/12/2021 22:38

Why can you not believe it? The carbon dioxide shortage was talked about quite a bit on the news
gogohm · 12/12/2021 22:39

There's no cava at my local supermarket, disaster! I had to buy the inferior tasting prosecco Confused first world problems Grin

AdoraBell · 12/12/2021 22:43

Popped into a Morrison’s today, Somerset, the veg in the middle isle was cleared out but they seemed to have everything else. Although I was only buying breakfast items for this week, so didn’t look at all the shelves.

Nomorepinkcurtains · 12/12/2021 22:43

No crisps, matches (for the fire), doggy do bags which I then bought on eBay and if they reckon they are strong I only wonder what their take on flimsy would really be.

I froze chopped root veg, parsnips, celeriac, and brought a bag of frozen Brussels a month or so ago in cases there were shortages.

gogohm · 12/12/2021 22:43

I bought broccoli, French beans and cabbage today, also 6 bottles of cote de Rhone. Bought own brand crisps as usual, and bin bags - shortages must be localised

Buy a bottle of refillable spray bleach and washable cloths, far better for the environment.

WarmthAndDepth · 12/12/2021 23:23

Meh. I occasionally notice the odd empty space on a shelf, but pay zero attention to what's missing. It never seems to be anything I've come to buy. But then I'm not a big shopper. I tend to think: "I need something for a stew on Thursday and a soup on Friday; what have they got in?", and just buy what's there.
In fact, here's a good reason to turn our backs on buying so much new stuff; you know where you are with second hand items. I buy most of our stuff second hand, including Christmas gifts, and I've yet to be outdone by a shortage of what I am looking for.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/12/2021 00:23

@MissConductUS

I read an article (Apple News?) that mentioned the cc shortage on the East Coast. From my poor memory; apparently there's some problem with some dairy in NJ that's a major supplier to some cc processing plant. I don't remember what the problem is.

At any rate DH went scurrying to the store to buy cc for the caramel cheesecake for Xmas dinner. No shortage here, at least not in my corner of No Calif.

I'd read before Thanksgiving that they were predicting a shortage of pork products due to supply chain problems and I am noticing a shortage on smaller hams. There seem to be plenty of big hams, but not so many under 5 lbs. I only need 4 lbs for our ham balls. I'd hate to have to buy a 7-10 lb ham just to get 4 lbs.

CoffeeRunner · 13/12/2021 00:25

White Zinfandel.

Out of stock in Aldi for about a month. Available in larger supermarkets but a reduced selection of brands & higher prices.

RedSquirrelsAreAwesome · 13/12/2021 00:28

The crisp shortage situation around our way is dire, absolutely dire I tell you. Walkers are virtually non existent, it’s getting very serious.

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 13/12/2021 06:19

I've noticed a reduction in choice of crisps with many out of stock. Also have struggled to get the required number of a particular XO brandy that DP usually buys to give as gifts to his employees along with their bonus.

2022TheYearofMe · 13/12/2021 06:57

There has been shortages round here for months but nothing essential has been gone for months. It’s just been a case of shopping differently or trying somewhere else Ora few weeks later.

My favourite brands might be lacking but I could usually substitute with a similar item.

Agree about the crisps though, that Walkers problem seemed to wipe out the UKs crisp aisle for weeks.

Anyone else think Argos got rubbish since it became part of Sainsburys?

Tabbacus · 13/12/2021 07:10

I find Argos really frustrating how they just use local shop levels and deliveries, stuff is always in stock, just not close to me. There's been a few gaps on the shelves, but there's usually a similar alternative ie when walkers crisps when funny due to their software glitch other crisps were available.
