Do you do a Big Clean before Christmas?

I don't usually. Just do things as they need doing. But today it struck me that the kitchen cupboards were pretty filthy so I've given them a good scrub and cleaned the windows. Need to tackle the oven 😱

Just realised how dull this thread is

Yes. I tend to clean for visitors: oven, cupboards, on top of cupboards, windows. Last year, nobody was coming but I did it for Father Christmas.

yourfavouritemuggle · 11/12/2021 14:44

Yes we do! I've turned the sofas over this morning and vacuumed underneath them, steam cleaned the floor and put our cushion covers in the washing machine! I did blinds last week, need to tackle the oven tomorrow! I'm not sure why, my mum does it so I've just followed as it's seem like tradition 😂 x

Yes, well sort of, not myself. We had cleaners in last Saturday, 3 people for 4 hours, they do everything, windows, blinds, move all of the furniture, inside cupboards, etc, and the place is sparking from top to bottom.

TrickyD · 11/12/2021 14:46

We are having a small 'gathering' this evening, every one was asked to take a lateral flow test before arrival. So the downstairs is pretty shipshape and the first floor fit to receive coats etc as we have been dusting and wiping for a week.
But we still need to sort out top floor so that DS1's MIL from abroad who is coming with the family to stay for Christmas has a nice clean area.
We stayed with her three Christmases ago and her standards are high,

AmIBeingsillyy · 11/12/2021 14:49

Yes I love it. I do bits here and there throughout nov so the decorations can go up then in December more and 22/23 I do a huge deep clean change bedding etc I love it.

Planning to send dh out with dc on 23 for a bit so I can have a coffee and get on with it as it feels so cost and festive Xmas music on , nice candles , mince pies and being able to focus on the jobs

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/12/2021 14:49

I need to declutter DS room. Tired from kitchen cleaning now though. Have also been to Lidl today. DH is entertaining DCs, sorting out bins and cooking dinner. I've ordered oven pride so it has to happen now.

Yes always.....and will do another big clean when it all come down.... I quite enjoy cleaning tho 😁

Pegasussnail · 11/12/2021 14:52

Oh love a bit of oven pride magic Grin
I do a bit od a clean but I have a good daily routine so I don't have to do too much more.

Yesterday I did a huge declutter of dcs room (might paint it in January)
A tip - buy oven bags for cooking meat etc so you won't have to deal with a dirty oven too often (you get them in asda or pound shops)

Nidan2Sandan · 11/12/2021 14:58

Not really as I tend to keep on top of anything as we go. Xmas eve I'll hoover through and mop through as well.

WhatDidISayAlan · 11/12/2021 15:01

Yep - in the middle of taking a break from mine. I also do one on NYE daytime so I can start the new year with a clean house. Yes, I know it’s sad.

LastStarFighter · 11/12/2021 15:34

I usually have a week off in October and do it then, but I had flu when I was off so didn’t get around to it.

I think we’ll just have to live with it this year because I just don’t have time or energy. But it just doesn’t feel Christmasy without it.

I’m finding it quite anxiety inducing that additional things are going to be coming into the house without me having de cluttered and cleaned beforehand Xmas Hmm

HemanOrSheRa · 11/12/2021 15:46

Sort of. I (very loosely) follow the TOMM. So it's generally cleanish here. I do like to do a bit extra around 23rd Dec so it's nice and fresh. We put the Christmas tree and decs up last night so I gave the lounge a good going over afterwards.

Plus!!!! VERY EXCITING - I received my new vax spotwash machine today so I've just had a go at a couple of marks on the lounge carpet. I do shampoo it with the big vax cleaner but I really can't be arsed doing it before Christmas. I'll do it when the decs come down so it's fresh for new year. I am now casting my eyes around for any other marks/stains to attack. Rock N Roll Grin.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 11/12/2021 15:50

Yes, every year!

We move all the dining room and front room furniture and cleaned behind it all at the end of November, plus I cleaned all the windows / window frames etc at the same time. This was so the trees could go up in clean rooms. We've decorated the kitchen and bathroom this last week, so they look lovely and fresh, and the windows will be cleaned on 20 Dec when I deep clean / tidy the rest of the house.

Orangedaisy · 11/12/2021 15:50

I cleared out the DC’s rooms last weekend and hoovered behind furniture etc. so I guess so yes. And last time I did bathrooms and mopping (fortnightly here, with a quick once over the week in between) I made sure I did it really well. So this Friday before DP’s family come it should be easy to do it all again. And the same the week after when the next lot come.

I do find it full on though, it’s annoying that you still have to work out what to eat on Tuesday and clean the loo/do washing etc AS WELL as sort out all the Xmas stuff.

Orangedaisy · 11/12/2021 15:51

I’m hoping for dull weather so windows not being spotless won’t show. I don’t think anyone cares but it annoys me if they are smeary.

peboh · 11/12/2021 15:58

We don't have visitors really over christmas, only people popping in with presents or for a cuppa, so I don't do anything specific that I wouldn't do on a normal week cleaning wise. I do a 'big clean' every 3/4 months and only just did one early November.
I do however do a big clear out of clothes, toys, toiletries etc.. all the things that we can usually expect to find new versions of in gifts. I also clear out my fridge/freezer and cupboards to allow for the christmas food and all the junk to last up to nye.

Peridot1 · 11/12/2021 16:03

My mum always did so we were brought up with it. But until 3 weeks ago I’ve always had cleaners! I’m having to do it myself this year and I hate it. I’m queen of procrastination.

Having people over for dinner tonight so I’ve done downstairs. Will focus on upstairs next week.

Windows desperately need doing all over the house so that’s also on list for next week.

My plan is to get whole house cleaned by end of next week so it’s just daily upkeep the following week.

ivfbabymomma1 · 11/12/2021 16:12

Yes!!!! We have a cleaner yet I still do a big clean before Xmas Confused (I'm aware this is pointless)

Lacedwithgrace · 11/12/2021 16:16

This weekend is my cleaning weekend- shelves, cupboards, drawers everything! Finished upstairs and the kitchen today and tomorrow we'll do the rest. Booked a window cleaner and washing the cars next week too.

Sundancerintherain · 11/12/2021 16:19

Yes I do, between 22nd and 23rd ( small bungalow, just one and DH)
Each room gets a new scented candle once done so on Xmas eve it smells all Christmassy
.

NameChangeCity123 · 11/12/2021 16:21

Yeah I do it before putting tree and decs up as it's hard to clean round them and clear the cupboards to make space for food/presents etc

ExD1938 · 11/12/2021 16:21

Toowicked Is this is a one-off annual event, or do you have a regular cleaning contract? I would love a cleaner but would feel awkward having someone clean up my mess, dunno why really.

AdoraBell · 11/12/2021 16:34

Usually yes, this year we moved house 🤣 not because of Christmas though, just the way it worked out.

Leftbutcameback · 11/12/2021 16:35

I don't think I've ever done a big clean. Not just at Xmas. And not even when I couldn't leave the house for weeks!! Grin I used to tell myself it was the time that was lacking but clearly not.
