Do you do a Big Clean before Christmas?

I don't usually. Just do things as they need doing. But today it struck me that the kitchen cupboards were pretty filthy so I've given them a good scrub and cleaned the windows. Need to tackle the oven 😱

Just realised how dull this thread is

Dear Lord. Just started on DS room. I removed 2 huge boxes of lego, 2 further binbags of lego and 2 binbags of rubbish. Sorting the lego vs rubbish took 2 hours and I can't face doing anything else today.

Where does old lego go? Can't be arsed with ebay. Facebook marketplace? No full sets or boxes just millions of pieces. It's really heavy! Must be worth something.

Stick it on Marketplace / your local selling pages. It'll definitely go!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2021 18:45

Yes, and I’ve done it already, since we just had far flung family staying 2 nights, for the ritual present-swop.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 11/12/2021 19:44

Big, thorough clean every year, and then top up clean on NYE day. Its a tradition I picked up from my mum. Would usually do it next weekend but we're going away, so I have to fit it in Christmas week, in between beauty appointments. I love having a clean tidy house for Christmas!

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 11/12/2021 19:48

No op it's not dull! Well I suppose it is if your a regular cleaner?
We aren't so sure we do need to to do a Christmas clean

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 11/12/2021 19:52

Lego is now listed in marketplace. Dcs will get a 5% cut each. They are chuffed 😀

Not for Christmas per se, but I clean if I have visitors coming, and at Christmas there’s always someone staying over so I can’t get away with warning the dc off taking nana upstairs

I rearrange furniture to fit the Christmas tree so the living room naturally gets a bit of a clean before the decorations go up.

But in the less important areas I just take advantage of soft winter lighting

MynameisWa · 11/12/2021 19:57

I have been cleaning and painting/decorating for Christmas since October.

The more you do, the more you find to do. Even though I’ve been hard at it for weeks, I’m still not satisfied. It gets to be a compulsion - at least it does for me.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/12/2021 20:14

Someone once told me that the best Christmas present she ever had, when she was working flat out and had family coming to stay, was her dh paying for a whole team to come and clean absolutely everything - windows, inside cupboards, paintwork, oven, carpets, the lot.

YourVagesty · 11/12/2021 20:18

I just keep looking at my dusty skirting boards and thinking I'll need to do them at some point this week (before the family starts arriving).

You'd think this wouldnt be a huge job but I'm heavily pregnant so it's going to be a bit of a challenge.

godmum56 · 11/12/2021 20:24

I usually do but its been a mad year here for various reasons so I've chucked it in the fuckit bucket

GinnyBee · 11/12/2021 20:32

Yes, habit from growing up. It's pretty much tradition where I'm from and everyone I know does it, but now that I live in the UK people think I'm mad. But I like ti squeaky clean and fresh for Christmas! back home we would chuck even the mattresses out onto the snow to freshen up, all bedding gets aired on the balcony, floors washed, sauna scrubbed clean, rugs cleaned... My grandma would even wipe down walls and ceilings but that was never done in my house.

oohyoudevilyou · 11/12/2021 21:18

Yes, I do a big clean before Christmas. Cleaning is the single thing that calms me and makes me feel in control when stressed (and having the DH's parents, sister and partner and their spirited 3 yo little emperor and "high needs" baby for 5 days WILL be stressful!). I will probably send them all out for long walks while I set to with the Vax every day during Christmas too!

LaurenKelsey · 11/12/2021 21:21

I have my regular cleaner come a few days before Christmas to do a regular cleaning. After Christmas when I’ve put all the decorations away and it’s a new year, I’m motivated to deep clean.

How depressing, that she thought this was a great gift. If my DH arranged that as a Christmas gift, I would seriously question how he regarded me / our roles
TurnUpTurnip · 11/12/2021 21:36

Yes I’m planning to as I need to get rid of stuff to make space

WalkingOnSonshine · 11/12/2021 21:36

I’ve been decluttering and selling things since September. It’s cleared a load of stuff, paid for most presents & bought all of DS’ clothes in the next size up.

We have cleaners every week, but they are coming a week on Monday to do a deep clean. We leave for Christmas in the Wednesday so I’ll change the bedding just before we go so it’s all nice for us when we get back the week after.

You could be sitting on a goldmine OP Grin Some lego is worth it weight in gold!

TheOrigRights · 11/12/2021 21:36

Nope.

Oldraver · 11/12/2021 22:03

I do tend to yes as we move things around so clean some areas that maybe don't get done often

Today was the ' what's actually hidden under/behind DS's bed, as we have to move it to get into the loft

PegasusReturns · 11/12/2021 22:24

Yes. Well not me the cleaner plus specialists.

Everything gets an extra deep clean on the run up to Christmas. Plus ovens, windows and rugs all get a professional clean. Spare glasses, crockery and silver all get done.

Bed linen all changed to Christmas sets so that’s all washed and ready to go. Pantry and freezers cleared out ready for cooking/left overs.

The order is relaxing Smile

peaceanddove · 11/12/2021 22:31

We're lucky to have an excellent cleaner so house never gets grubby anyway. But I always book her for a few extra hours the last week before Christmas to get everything sparkling.

OfMinceAndMen · 11/12/2021 22:31

No. The house is always clean anyway, so I don't have to do anything extra to prepare. My ILs bring a massive (and very loved) great big slobbering labrador with them, and don't give a crap about the effort I've gone to, so I actually clean when theyve left and christmas is over!

Minniem2020 · 11/12/2021 22:40

Yes but more so for the clearing out of toys, clothes etc. Everyone has to have clean bedding for Xmas Eve too although I've no idea why. I think my mum may have done this and I've subconsciously picked it up

ohreallynotreally · 11/12/2021 22:41

Absolutely not . I really cannot be bothered. Kids back from Uni so have changed bedlinen and dusted their rooms . Generally keep the house fairly clean so not a priority.
