@NadiaVulvokov

kilties, skirlie

What are they?
Kilties are like pigs in blankets and skirlie is oatmeal fried with onions in dripping.

TheUndeadLovelinessOfDemons · 25/10/2021 09:33

Roast pork, roast potatoes, at least 3 veg, gravy, cranberry sauce, apple sauce.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 25/10/2021 10:25

I absolutely love making Christmas dinner. I usually cook it all on Christmas Eve morning and then we just plate up for dinner each day as wanted so we have a full dinner for several days running. I do it all in take away size foil trays (don't shoot me) and so certain elements are cooked fresh each day but are prepared in the freezer, it's just to transfer to the oven.
Boxing Day is always a Moist maker sandwich a la Friends.

Turkey - cooked in cider
Ham - slow cooked in cider and finished off in the oven
Gravy - made from the pre mentioned cider and port

Pigs in blankets
Stuffing - breadcrumbs, sausage meat, brambly apples and a jar of whole cranberry sauce and some apricots

Chanteney carrots in orange and roasted in honey
Honey roasted parsnips
Sprouts with bacon and chestnuts - roasted
Cauliflower cheese

Childhood traditions
Mine:
Tin of processed peas - fried in butter
Fried egg 🥚

My partners:
Onion rings

Roast potatoes
Mash with cheese
Carrot and swede mash

Yorkshire puddings
Cranberry sauce

So for some parts of it, there is only enough in the trays for 1 ladel full (small tray) as need to leave room for everything else.

Roast parsnips
Stuffing

Don’t generally have starter (same as the rest of the year) and normally nit enough room for dessert so, for supper, we’ll have cheesecake, meringue roulade, trifle, cheese & biscuits all available.

shinynewapple21 · 25/10/2021 15:00

Normally it's

Turkey and PIBs for meat eaters
Nut roast or similar for me
Roast pots
Mashed pots
Parsnips
Brussels sprouts
Carrots
Peas
Two kinds of stuffing
Cranberry sauce
Turkey and veggie gravy

We don't have a starter.

This year however , we are going out for Christmas lunch and it appears we eat canapés, starter and sorbet before we even get to our Christmas lunch . I'm considering going for a non-traditional lunch choice (fish) as I am not sure I can eat a full Christmas meal when I've already eaten 3 types of starter . That's the definition of a first world problem I think !

@youvegottenminuteslynn

I'm a non Christmassy person and last year had THE best Christmas ever because I had a delicious spaghetti bolognese using my favourite recipe. I know, I know - sacrilege on here but after years of battling PTSD for various reasons during Christmas time my counsellor suggested a me day and I bloody loved it! Favourite films and shows, favourite music, favourite meal, longest bath ever and no triggers. GLORIOUS it was!
that sounds fabulous!

If Christmas was just an oven tray of sausage rolls I would be happy as a pig in a blanket Grin. Ready rolled all butter puff pastry and some sausages from the butchers laid end to end and flip over the pastry. 40mins oven.

Ping! Christmas dinner is served. It's heaven.

Turkey crown - with the best will in the world, no one in my family likes turkey enough to give over 3/4 of the oven for a whole bird, or to be eating it in curry for weeks afterwards. If only a few meat eaters, possibly spatchcocked chicken or quails instead.

Vegetarian Wellington/nut roast - whatever recipe I fancy experimenting with each year

Gammon joint slow cooked with cider & cloves - leftovers end up as Boxing Day buffet

PIBs/vegetarian sausages

Roast potatoes with rosemary & garlic salt

Roast parsnips glazed with honey

Carrots & sprouts - usually just steamed (in different layers) as no one except me really likes them faffed with. Frozen peas &/or fresh broccoli also steamed for the sad sprout refusers.

Red cabbage, slow cooked with apple, port & onions.

Stuffing

Gravy - a vegan version & another jug with the turkey juices added

Cranberry sauce

(No cauliflower cheese as we usually serve that as a meal in itself quite regularly & it really doesn't go with gravy. Also no yorkies unless I'm serving beef/lamb/venison as the meat - I'm quite trad in that respect).

KatherineJaneway · 25/10/2021 20:22

Goose, loads of pigs in blankets, our butchers sausage meat and cranberry stuffing, roast and mashed potatoes (daughter makes heavenly roast spuds), roast parsnips, broccoli and cauliflower cheese, peas, Brussels, carrots. Onion gravy.

Generally no room for pudding, but have Christmas tea of gammon sandwiches, smoked salmon sandwiches, sausage rolls, cheese board and Christmas cake....

I accept this makes me sound like a right wanker, but, if I can’t boast anonymously on mumsnet, where can I..?!
We are having sprouts, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, red cabbage and roasted onion gravy all from the garden (my first year of growing veg!) and I’ve been foraging massive wanker bit nuts all September and October for a home made nut roast - hazelnuts, walnuts and sweet chestnuts.

I’m not making my own wine… maybe next year Grin
