May be specific to my family but I would say beware of what you're getting into with DNA testing kits.

I got one for my Dad one year as he was interested in his family tree, and it turned out (to cut a very long story short) that his dad was not actually his dad (triangulation of data - completely unrelated to cousins on his "dad's" side).

The Christmas present that keeps on giving...
