Very Tricky Gift To Buy

TedTookVows · 30/09/2021 22:47

There is a member of my extended family who I really really dislike. They are a horror and I feel like I could go further but I won't. I severely limit all contact with them, but (usually) can't get out of Christmas.

I tend to operate a "if they go low you go high" principle with them but I am worn down by the way they continuously deliberately passive aggressively insult me via gifts. Recent past include : a single wrapped sweet that only comes in a larger multibag, amongst a box of tat, regifted shot glasses that someone else bought them (I don't do shots) and airfreshener.

Believe me this person is the worst.

So basically I need a "poison chalice" gift.

Please list gifts that looked good and you thought would be good but were in fact the worst eg bath salts that gave you thrush Grin

(lighthearted)

A single BOGOF item with the BOGOF sticker still on

Last year’s Beano annual. In fact I have one, PM me if you want me to send it to you 😂

Chubbybum · 01/10/2021 20:42

Whatever you get them be sure to cover it in A LOT of glitter before you wrap it

Beefmeupscotty · 01/10/2021 20:42

I'd regift the crap they gave melast year.

MerylSqueak · 01/10/2021 20:46

I think you should do the charity of your own choice gift this year, then keep the gift they give you this year to repackage and give back to them next year, meanwhile taking a selection of photos to choose from for a mug for the next year (and possibly sitting down to entertain their child by drawing with them to take the drawing for the next year).

TedTookVows · 01/10/2021 20:53

Some of these are making me crease Smile
I'm now working with :

  1. Tacky rendering of childs artwork
  2. a regifted accessory I dont like
  3. Nuisance voucher
Grin

Any new ideas welcome. I did see what I thought was the ideal gift for someone you hate in B and M and that was gift sets by Bisto and Super Noodles but they are too shamelessly pointed

Anti aging cream from the pound shop
Foot socks that leave your skin hanging off after a week
Fancy tissue box cover, but no tissues
Shampoo/conditioner set for hair that's not like her hair type
Mug with a picture of an animal she doesn't like
A long night dress with a horrible pattern
One pair of tights in a colour she'd never wear

Go to a charity shop and you'll find any amount of things you could get her - 2nd hand books about things she wouldn't be into (sport, fishing, history..)/a cardigan in a size too small/a 2nd hand purse or handbag and make a small rip in the bottom of it so things go missing in it

The possibilities are endless ... I almost wish I had someone like that to buy for now Grin

My friend had a SIL who used to buy her passive aggressive gifts for no reason. Friend had very many miscarriages over a number of years and was desperate for a child. She couldn't get past 20 weeks and chances of her carrying full term were very very slim. Her and DH continued to try and began to not tell anyone when she was pregnant, unless they HAD to know. She also requested nobody buy anything or even acknowledge her pregnancy if we did know. We could ask "how are you?" but we didnt mention the future or go into specifics. She was pregnant one Christmas and turns out MIL had told SIL. the "need to know" reason was, so SIL didnt buy friend alcohol for Christmas. She got my friend a "mother and baby photoshoot" experience day, which was opened in front of a room full of people at MILs. Friend lost the baby early in the new year.

(friend eventually adopted 3 wonderful little boys)

Haven't RTFT but how about a charity donation certificate that provides Christmas dinner for a starving family in Namibia or something? (plus something small, a chocolate bar maybe?)

You don't have to recycle tat that way and at least someone gets something they want!

titchy · 01/10/2021 21:32

Could you make one of these Grin

The actual cuntery of this.

The Horror gets off on being rude and hurtful, gets a visible thrill from it.

Doubt even they would go this far.

Its a superiority/inferiority thing with them, its all about letting me know I'm not important and should definitely have no notions that I might be.

Floral enamel design single wine glass.

Ugly, impractical, cheap and will fall apart, impossible to regift or sell on. Also purchasing one implies that they have nobody who wants to drink with them (in my mind, on this occasion anyway!)

mafted · 01/10/2021 21:53

Something with a photo of you on, a cushion or socks perhaps.

A gift experience for something a long way from where they live.

A mug with 'to the best whatever relation they are to you' on.

A voucher for a restaurant they don't like.

mafted · 01/10/2021 21:54

One of those glittered wine glasses or bottles of zoflora, unless they like that kind of thing.

TinselTime21 · 01/10/2021 22:29

Soemthing like one of them tacky sewing kits from the poundshop.
My ex got me one once.. Because I said I couldn't /wouldn't sew his work trousers. That was one of my Xmas gifts.

Also a laptop bag when I didn't have a laptop

ilovepixie · 01/10/2021 22:59

Why even buy them something or spend Christmas with them! Life is too short just ignore them and spend your money and time with people you love.

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 01/10/2021 23:06

A coprolite. It’s a fossil, some are polished. It’s formed from dinosaur poo.

HerkyBaby · 01/10/2021 23:09

Some odour eater shoe inserts

NoTimeToDye · 01/10/2021 23:15

A 6 month subscription for something you know they dislike such as a political magazine opposite to their views. You get the passive aggressive joy on the day of them opening the subscription voucher and the added joy of knowing a little bundle of irritation will land on their mat every month for the next six months.
