Bread sauce - yes or no?

Blablabla1984 · 03/12/2020 17:42

I've never made or had bread sauce. DH says it's amazing so I want to give it a go. From pics the consistency looks a bit lumpy though, can I blend it to make it smooth? Also, does it freeze well?

Yes,yes,yes.

CoffeeSTAT · 03/12/2020 17:44

I love it. DHs family claim they don't like it but that's because they have dreadful taste.

lazylinguist · 03/12/2020 17:44

Yes! Smooth bread sauce would be wrong though. It's not supposed to be smooth.

Madbengalmum · 03/12/2020 17:44

I love bread sauce with a chicken dinner too. I don’t make from scratch and use colmans packet, i actually like it better than any i have made from scratch and it is smooth too.

ipredictacarrot · 03/12/2020 17:55

OMG yes!

StartingGrid · 03/12/2020 18:19

At the thought of bread sauce I am actually salivating! The lumps are necessary though, don't ruin a good thing

LooneyLovefood · 03/12/2020 18:20

Even the thought of bread sauce makes me gag so it's a massive no from me.

TeddyIsaHe · 03/12/2020 18:21

Don’t blend it! It would be like baby food, yuck.

Use Delia’a recipe if you want to make it yourself, failing that Colman’s with extra butter, seasoning, cream and nutmeg has never let me down.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 03/12/2020 18:22

No, it's like eating Ready Brek with clove flavouring. Or at least my mum's is.

bestbefore · 03/12/2020 18:24

Oh hell yes! And agree Delia has the best recipe. I just full fat milk. Buy a proper farmhouse loaf a week before Christmas, when it's a bit stale, cut the crusts off and blend it to make crumbs in the mixer. Then freeze the crumbs in a bag ready to use whenever

I loooooooovvvve bread sauce. I do the delia one. My MIL does a packet one that gives me the rage, but she doesn't like homemade one so I have to pretend to like the packet one every other year. Do NOT blend it.

AuntieStella · 03/12/2020 18:26

It's not supposed to be smooth.

Not that I'm one to advise - my annual Great Bread Sauce Disaster is stuff of legend, but I will not be defeated!!

PragmaticPrinciple · 03/12/2020 18:26

Oh, this is major Bleugh to me - but members of my family love it. And wouldn't have Christmas dinner without it.

Yes, you can freeze it.

Frazzlefrazle · 03/12/2020 18:28

Bloody love bread sauce!! I eat a bowl full to myself every christmas because none of my family like it.

olympicsrock · 03/12/2020 18:29

Bread sauce is delicious. Needs lots of flavour a la Delia onions , cloves etc. It is not smooth though. A thick texture. Freezes well . From the fridge afterward it is almost solid and great spread on a turkey sandwich. Have a practice run with a chicken dinner

TabbyStar · 03/12/2020 18:30

Yes, I'd happily just eat bread sauce with all the trimmings and not bother with the turkey. I just buy it from the chiller cabinet though.

AdaColeman · 03/12/2020 18:38

I love bread sauce! I make Mrs Beeton's recipe, infusing the milk with onion, herbs & spices. It shouldn't be too smooth, though a spoon or two of extra cream works well. It's great on turkey sandwiches too!

IsFinnRogersDead · 03/12/2020 18:42

Soooooo nice.
I made it once with breadcrumbs from irish soda bread. Brilliant.

missmouse101 · 03/12/2020 18:46

Oh it's delicious! Absolutely must NOT be blended smooth. Do you blend porridge? Of course not. Neither should bread sauce.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/12/2020 18:53

I haven't made Bread Sauce for years !

I used to stud the onion with cloves (loads of them) add peppercorns , bayleafs and heat then leave to infuse.

The onion was nice and soft , took out the cloves and liquidised the onion with the milk for added flavour .
Good breadcrumbs, butter, fresh nutmeg.

Its a faff but worth it .

NovemberR · 03/12/2020 18:53

I love bread sauce. Like others say - DO NOT blend it. It's really easy to make in the microwave too.

Lazysundayafternoons · 03/12/2020 18:54

Yes!

I dont have it year round but will be making it on Christmas day.

jambeforeclottedcream · 03/12/2020 18:54

Yes even the packet stuff where you add milk is so good. Even better cold on Boxing Day with cold cuts

TFSRM · 03/12/2020 19:13

Bread sauce is lovely. Put lots and lots of cloves in and DO NOT blend it!

Skipsurvey · 03/12/2020 19:15

oh YES, best thing , one of the best things, is bread sauce
