Bread sauce - yes or no?

I've never made or had bread sauce. DH says it's amazing so I want to give it a go. From pics the consistency looks a bit lumpy though, can I blend it to make it smooth? Also, does it freeze well?

Love bread sauce. It tastes great cold on a turkey sandwich as well.

HighHeelBoots · 03/12/2020 19:38

I love bread sauce, easy to make
My friend eats bread sauce sandwiches, that may be a step too far Grin

Secret to a good bread sauce is getting the mace balance right. Too little and it's sloppy tasteless goo. Too much and it's like soap. Just the right amount it's amazing.

teddybearsbear · 04/12/2020 14:13

Yes yes it's not Christmas dinner without the bread sauce and I confess to making extra to have cold in sandwiches on Boxing Day

I also do the packet mixes with roast chicken dinners

It's a strange thing I was brought up with it and my parents were too we all love it but most people I tell about it have never heard of it let alone tried it

SomewhereEast · 04/12/2020 16:24

I'd never even heard of bread sauce till I moved to the UK and now I totally love it! Fresh is best but M & S do a really good one (ready to go not packet mix) if you're feeling lazy.

NoWordForFluffy · 04/12/2020 16:25

Hell, no. I have issues with the texture of it.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/12/2020 16:29

Oh yes, but don’t do as my friend did and smother your whole Christmas carvery dinner in it, only to realise after the first bite, you’d mistakenly covered it in horseradish sauce instead. 🤢

NeedToKnow101 · 04/12/2020 16:31

It's a yes from me!! Delicious and so easy to make.

GarlicSoup · 04/12/2020 18:30

Oh Yes baby YES Xmas Grin

KittenCalledBob · 04/12/2020 18:32

Bread sauce is my favourite part of Christmas dinner!!

butterycooler · 04/12/2020 18:33

I'd eat a whole bowl of the stuff smeared on paxo sage and onion stuffing balls.

I could actually cry that I now have to be gluten free and can't have either Sad

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2020 18:34

No, I think it’s disgusting..

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 04/12/2020 18:35

Never had it, never known anyone who eats it. We have cheesy baked leeks with Christmas Dinner so cheese sauce serves a similar purpose I imagine.

RyvitaBrevis · 04/12/2020 18:43

You have to have grown up with it to appreciate it. The consistency is unholy. Would you want to put thin porridge on your turkey? It's like that. Blech.

Cheese sauce is nothing like bread sauce,,,trust me 😃
MrsPnut · 04/12/2020 19:27

Bread sauce is so easy to make that the packets are unnecessary.

I infuse milk with an onion studded with cloves, bay leaves and some blades of mace.
Stale good bread, I save bits during the year in the freezer cut into chunks. Dissolve the bread into the milk by heating it and then season with nutmeg, salt, pepper and cream. Fish out the onion, bay leaves and mace blades.
It is brilliant on poultry, and leftover sandwiches, or just dipping pigs in blankets in it from the fridge.

Delia is your friend here.

BEST PART OF CHRISTMAS DINNER

userxx · 04/12/2020 19:38

How are you meant to swallow the turkey without bread sauce ? Couldn't entertain a Xmas dinner without.

princessbear80 · 04/12/2020 19:53

@CoffeeSTAT

I love it. DHs family claim they don't like it but that's because they have dreadful taste.
I could have written this myself Grin

Leftover bread sauce (if there is any!) also goes really well in soup.

I throw the turkey carcass, veg, any left over stuffing, sausage meat, bread sauce, gravy into a pan with stock. The best soup ever.

VestaTilley · 04/12/2020 19:58

It’s not meant to be smooth- be careful how you treat it else it’ll end up like wall paper paste.

Delia’s recipe is delicious- follow that and you’ll be fine. I always make it.

VestaTilley · 04/12/2020 20:00

@butterycooler I’m coeliac - you can still eat it- just make your own bread sauce using GF bread (Schar is best) and Paxo do a gluten free stuffing, find it in the free-from aisle.

VikingVolva · 04/12/2020 20:16

Waitrose do a gluten free version - could you try that? Perhaps with a bit of extra spice

Chocolatechocolatechocolate · 04/12/2020 23:06

Not a fan myself - lots and lots of gravy all the way though

butterycooler · 04/12/2020 23:33

Thank you 😊 I've tried other GF stuffing mixes and they were disappointing. I haven't seen the paxo one. I'll keep an eye out.
