We try and get ours up 12 days before. But in your case, I would probably put it up sooner as you are likely to be too busy with new baby. However, you don't want the spirit of christmas to be lost if the tree is up for too long, IYKWIM?

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 16/10/2007 11:28

Well, I am very excited as I have never hosted Christmas before so have never done "proper" decorations. Am currently printing out snowflake patterns

Put them up before, you will be glad that it is done when you get back.

Ds and dd have advent calendars which I make up for them every year so I have to get them down at the beginning of dec. When it was just me and dh, waited till mid dec, but the dcs love it so much, I now put them all up at the beginning of dec.

1st Dec.

Always

barnstaple · 16/10/2007 11:30

Christmas Eve. It's all part of the ritual and makes the day more special as the decs are 'new', we haven't had time to get used to them.

dc's always want them up asap in December, so try to do it around the first or second weekend

Slubberdegullion · 16/10/2007 11:34

2nd saturday in Dec. I would love to hold out until Christmas eve, but the need for twinkly lights overtakes my desire for a elegant and traditional Christmas.

JARM · 16/10/2007 11:34

Im thinking the same things fifi - im due 26th November, so knowing me, will have baby beginning of dec.

I think im going to wait until he is born and play it by ear - and get DH to do it all while i sit and watch!

Probably 12th-14th dec

Lauriefairycake · 16/10/2007 11:34

When the schools finish or the weekend before Christmas.

Budababe · 16/10/2007 11:36

Am hoping to get away with not doing it this year as am going home to Dublin on 19th. But suspect DS will want them up in which case maybe first weekend in Dec.

Nbg · 16/10/2007 11:37

I forgot I was due my baby 28th Nov

Well if I'm still around, they will be up on the 1st

SoMuchToBats · 16/10/2007 11:37

JARM - my ds was due 25th November, and he was born 5th December. I put up decs about a week before Christmas as usual, but had bought and wrapped all presents by mid November (and was I glad I had!)

Gobbledispook · 16/10/2007 11:38

5th December because it's dh's birthday and it's been a tradition for him since he was little.

I like them up for a while too because it takes so long to do it in the first place.

Also, I remember as a child coming home from school with the tree lights on etc - so I like them to be up for the last few weeks of term for the kids.

JARM · 16/10/2007 11:39

i will admit most of the presents have been bought already... i love the internet!

Only thing i will need to get from town will be wrapping paper and xmas cards i think (i like to choose those myself!)

I plan on having EVERYTHING sorted by mid november!

CovenOVeneer · 16/10/2007 11:39

I to am hosting my first christmas. Am planning to put decorations up the weekend before the children break up. It is ds's birthday the weekend after they break up so we will be busy with his party.

I fear I may be going rather over the top. Have bought great lengths of (rather expensive) garlands which will be adorning the bannisters (all 4 floors of them), outside lights (twinkly white ones) for the outside bannisters and trees and we are having 2 trees. . I have hidden it all in the garage, but dh will be shocked when I bring it all out

Budababe · 16/10/2007 11:42

LOL Cov - you are enjoying this Xmas lark aren't you? Good for you. I hope that it is all you want and more.

NomDeBroomstick · 16/10/2007 11:44

First Sunday in Dec chez NDP

claricebeansmum · 16/10/2007 11:45

We do the day DC break up from school - around 19/20th.

NomDeBroomstick · 16/10/2007 11:45

although last year we had a lovely real tree but it dropped 70% of its needles by xmas day despite keeping it watered. I think we'll probably put our general decs up on the first Sun and put the tree up properly about 2 weeks before xmas.

fifisworld · 16/10/2007 11:46

Well im going in for c/s the weekend of the 7th Dec i think, so i think i will do them before i go, i cant trust dp to do it he has no co-ordination

CovenOVeneer · 16/10/2007 12:42

I know Buda, I'm a bit sad, but after 34 years of having christmas at my parents I feel it is quite a big deal to be taking over. My mum set very high standards

Charlee · 16/10/2007 12:44

1st Dec its a family thing me,dp and the kids get really into its great.

ToadieG1 · 16/10/2007 12:45

We follow tradition and do it on Dec 1st.

spookyspice · 16/10/2007 12:45
