Every day is a skool day. 😉😎

BiddyPop · 29/09/2020 14:14

Peels and slices, boils with carrots and mashes - but often forgets to mash, or to season, or boils them for 2 hours instead of 20 minutes..... Envy (not envy). We've even had periods when just sliced and boiled and served unseasoned and watery blobs alongside heavily oversalted and slushy mashed potatoes (the very watery kind - not the nice buttery creamy kind), and a chicken breast grilled with no seasoning and made leathery by the slow speed of the grill.....

I only grew to love parsnips when I got my own kitchen. I did grow them a few years on the plot - warty organic mini-parsnips were the result, but quite tasty. (Whereas carrots were always attacked by carrot root fly so I could never get anything edible from those - at least small parsnips are edible!).

I'm looking out the window at sunshine and wondering if I should go out for milk, a school book and a walk before I get stuck in again, or be good and get my head down. I'm thinking my list of jobs is getting long so I really ought to tackle a few ….

pussycatinboots · 29/09/2020 14:27

Biddy My mum used to do the same with turnip instead of parnsip. Boiled to death for hours, then chopped into some sort of orange puree.
And the watery mash with no seasoning or butter.
And the Chicken you could use to replace the sole of your shoe.
Have you tried Chantenay Carrots, they're stumpy so will grow well in a pot and if they get big enough they're fab roasted.

CrazyBaubles · 29/09/2020 14:31

Fluffy I used to buy veg from a farmers market and their parsnips were always misshapen but so so tasty. I'm assuming that's how yours are?
I love them roasted, especially if you add a little honey 😋
DH is talking about making some sort of parsnip soup next week (he's experimenting with flavours - I've just eaten a sweet potato and chilli soup for lunch which was delicious).

Biddy my dm likes her veg to be cooked to mush but she cooks hers in a saucepan separate to everyone else's so she's at least learnt how to do it in an acceptable way too Grin

Course is done for the day. It was intense so I walked the dog in my lunch break and am now treating myself to a small bar of dark sea salt choc (from Aldi, they're lovely) and getting back into some work. Roll on 4:30

WreckTangled · 29/09/2020 14:59

My dad boils broccoli for about twenty minutes 🤮 I don't like boiled anything apart from frozen peas!

NerosFiddle · 29/09/2020 15:04

My dps boil all beg for at least 2 hours. I'm not even joking

pussycatinboots · 29/09/2020 15:06

wreck DH likes his broccoli pulped overcooked like that. I only do it with a roast, so just smother it in gravy and hope for the best. Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 29/09/2020 15:08

Grim, Neros. My parents boil everything for about 20 minutes. We use a steamer here.

Boots, I do my swede by boiling, with butter and salt in the pan, then adding pepper when I mash it. It's really lovely!

Crazy, yes, ugly but SO tasty! They'll taste even better when the frost has been. 😋

fluffy I always buy the wonky veg from morrisons. It's cheaper too.
I've tried freezing a bit of colley and broccoli from last weekend - I didn't bother par-boiling it and cooling then double freezing, so I'll let you know how bad it is (not holding out much hope, but it was that or the bin).

NoWordForFluffy · 29/09/2020 15:32

It'll go into soup, even if it's not ideal for eating with your dinner!

I got the medium fleece and it's going to be too big. Annoyingly you have to pay to return unless you return to store so not sure what I'll do yet.

TheWoollybacksWife · 29/09/2020 16:35

Wreck I posted your parcel today

WreckTangled · 29/09/2020 16:53

Just got back from football it's so warm outside was boiling in my coat

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/09/2020 20:13

DH likes roast parsnips but I find them a bit sweet (even just plain roasted )
Sometimes I par-boil then roll in breadcrumbs and vegetarian style hard cheese ( Parmesan stylee) then roast . A faff but delicious .

I love the Matalan "Winter Animal" plates and the Fir Tree kitchen towels (they'd go in the bathroom)

I had a look on the John Lewis Christmas site there are some very very odd decorations this year , no connection to Christmas whatsoever .

As it's Octov=ber 1st this Friday I can see some Christmas shopping on the horizon .....Xmas Grin
