Christmas cross stitch

Hello all! I’m thinking of taking up cross stitch this year, I used to love doing it as a child but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any recommendations for good cross stitch kits? I have looked on amazon but the designs look really complicated! I want to do some Xmas designs and maybe make them into coasters (or at least decorations I can use).

Has anyone else done this?

The same houses, different people.

I love some of the Prairie Schooler Christmas designs. I'm working through the Nutcrackers booklet at the moment. They stitch up quickly and not too tricky for a beginner. I've bought a lot of nice Christmas bauble patterns from ebay this year, cut outs from past issues of cross stitch magazines. I enjoy these threads, there's lots of talented stitchers on Mumsnet.

@AllTheWhoresOfMalta

Ooh shamelessly posting for a placemark. I want to make some Christmas decorations for friends this year. I just made this for a girl I know who’s off to university to study English Lit.
That's lovely. Can you tell me where you got the pattern from?

I heard that quote on a podcast the other day and I know someone that it would be perfect for.

Love all of these! This is the one I am currently working on.

I love yours, Most. What are the finished dimensions?

I'm on a non-Christmas one at the moment, but will probably do my Historical Sampler Advent one next.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 03/10/2020 06:26

30 by 40cm fluffy, biggest one I have ever done :)

NoWordForFluffy · 03/10/2020 08:38

I checked mine of the same brand, which is the same as yours. I'm getting that for my birthday.

My JC ones are 31 x 22cm, so a fair bit smaller in total area.

What have you decided to make OP?

I started cross stitching last year and really enjoyed the Bothy Threads Christmas card kits for beginners.
Am attempting a Merejka kit now. Not as big as themostwonderfultimeoftheyear but still biggest / most difficult one I've done (I've managed the snowman so far)

Have you looked at The Geeky Cross Stitch Company ? They have some adorable little designs/kits and around this time of year offer a ‘12 days of stitchy Christmas’ box which contains 6 little Christmas themed cross stitch kits with hoops to display them, plus 6 other packages of stitchy goodies. I had one last year and thoroughly enjoyed it 😊

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/10/2020 13:06

I love Satusma Street (on Etsy). She's just brought out some stocking kits too.

Residentdove2020 · 09/10/2020 13:55

@Maisieme Wow, your houses are amazing. I had no idea there was 3D cross stitch! Just been lost down a wormhole Grin Thank you for sharing.

Residentdove2020 · 09/10/2020 14:08

@Clutterbugsmum Your second link took me to this cross stitch on Amazon. Which is weird as I'm doing a paint by numbers of this exact image ShockGrin

@Residentdove2020

If I was to do a paint by number it would like a 3 yr old did it Grin.

Hope your painting turns out good.

Residentdove2020 · 09/10/2020 14:15

Clutterbugsmum I have a neurological condition & my efforts so far are pre-school! Grin But it's the taking part right? Wink

Good luck with your cross stitch! I can't do the big jobs Grin

Clutterbugsmum · 09/10/2020 14:18

Yep definitely the taking part is the best part.

As for the large cross stitch my lovely children were taking guesses on how many YEARS it's going to take me Grin.

The Frosted Pumpkin stitchery has just released their Christmas Stitch-a-long for next year if anyone is interested! It looks great. Fyi as its an American company, The Homemakery is selling the kits for UK customers :)

Lonelykettleshed · 09/10/2020 22:14

Off to look at The Homemakery website now. I must resist (who am I kidding).

Winterfellismyhome · 10/10/2020 07:18

Haha @Lonelykettleshed the fabric is beautiful on there

Forresttheout · 10/10/2020 15:14

It's a good job I can't get delivery or I'd be giving the home makery all my money. That fabric is beautiful. Also love the selection of even weave linen. Cross stitch on linen is the next challenge I want to take on

Winterfellismyhome · 11/10/2020 12:37

Just popping on (again) to recommend Barbara Ana designs and Country Cottage needlework who both have lovely Christmas designs :)

Forresttheout · 11/10/2020 14:25

How do you all finish off your design's? I cut out one of my baubles and its frayed so quickly the stitches have come out

Winterfellismyhome · 16/10/2020 18:20

Just finished this by StitchingHousewives on Etsy. Lovely quick little stitch. Going to put in on the tree!

@Forresttheout I usually leave mine in hoops
