Christmas cross stitch

Hello all! I’m thinking of taking up cross stitch this year, I used to love doing it as a child but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any recommendations for good cross stitch kits? I have looked on amazon but the designs look really complicated! I want to do some Xmas designs and maybe make them into coasters (or at least decorations I can use).

Has anyone else done this?

@IfeellikeaJoan

That's lovely kirstos!
Awesome thank you. It was a lot of work but I am really pleased with it. My friend talked me into doing 2 different ones for her children which I am slightly regretting now!
IfeellikeaJoan · 22/09/2020 19:29

That's nice of you to do that, I imagine it will take a lot of time!

SaltyAndFresh · 22/09/2020 19:36

All my cross stitches include the word fuck Grin

Not a kit but check out stitchrovia patterns she has a book but not Xmas ... But I'd highly recommend as it tells you what to buy with the patterns

John Lewis have got some nice cross stitch kits of Robins, some small ones for cards or book marks, one larger one of a delightful fluffy robin!

@CottonHeadedNinnyMug

Thanks for mentioning Satsuma Street - I saw some of their designs in an ad on Facebook ages ago and then couldn't find them again.

OP - don't be put off the Satsuma Street designs if they look bigger than you want, as they seem to be made up of smaller motifs and components you could easily do separately as a coaster or similar.

@Wolfiefan

I always wanted to do a HUGE Christmas cross stitch so I could hang it and feel like I had nearly finished decorating the house!
I do relatively big ones. I wouldn't say huge. They're hung up though!

I framed these 3 the other day. (Yes, they're on the wonk; the screws need levelling you!)

Great work fluffy!

Wolfiefan · 22/09/2020 21:34

Oh @NoWordForFluffy those are lovely. What amazing work. I always wanted a wintery and atmospheric Christmas evening village scene or Father Christmas somehow. But that middle one is lovely too!

ChequerBoard · 22/09/2020 21:37

Oh yes, great idea for a thread! I only do cross stitch for Xmas really, although I have occasionally done things for Halloween and Harry Potter / Hunger Games things for the kids.

Here are some of my Xmas bits and pieces..

ChippyTea16 · 22/09/2020 21:39

@Kirstos1 and @NoWordForFluffy I love your works! They both look lovely and festive!

I have ordered some bits from Amazon and going to give it a go and work up to the bigger ones - I love the Xmas scenes like Fluffy's!

@ChequerBoard love those! The deer one is adorable! For the ornaments do you just do them on normal aida and cut them out? Or do you have to buy specifically sized/shaped fabric?

@Wolfiefan, there's one in the same series as the Christmas scenes called 'Santa's Job Done' where he's resting by a fire. It's gorgeous (and I still need to buy it!).

I love your stocking, @Kirstos1.

Wolfiefan · 22/09/2020 21:46

I haven’t done cross stitch in years. You’re tempting me!!

elQuintoConyo · 22/09/2020 22:02

Ho ho ho placemarking Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 22/09/2020 22:25

I love Bothy thread designs. No idea if they make any Christmas ones but their other designs are all lovely.

Wolfiefan · 22/09/2020 22:30

I may need help! It’s been YEARS! Blush

NoWordForFluffy · 22/09/2020 22:35

I love Bothy too, @CrochetBug. The Wrendale collection has a Christmas donkey with robins and there's also a group of robins (I have both in my bag waiting!)

I got back into it a couple of years ago, Wolfe. It's like riding a bike...

Winterfellismyhome · 22/09/2020 22:50

I stitched this one last year. Ive just ordered Santas workshop from Heaven and Earth designs and it is massive Confused

Tiny modernist has some lovely Christmas patterns. She did a house two years ago which is really fun

Christmas donkey sounds lovely @NoWordForFluffy. Ds1 loves donkeys so i might have to do it. If i ever finish the giraffes Grin

Lonelykettleshed · 22/09/2020 22:56

These are by the Historical Sampler Company which sells kits and charts. I've used charts and changed some of the colours but they are relatively simple if you are re-starting and not too large.

@CrochetBug

I love Bothy thread designs. No idea if they make any Christmas ones but their other designs are all lovely.
CrochetBug, this was a Bothy Threads. It is lovely but there was a lot of metallic thread and that is horrible to stitch with and makes me want to hit things.
