Christmas cross stitch

Hello all! I’m thinking of taking up cross stitch this year, I used to love doing it as a child but I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any recommendations for good cross stitch kits? I have looked on amazon but the designs look really complicated! I want to do some Xmas designs and maybe make them into coasters (or at least decorations I can use).

Has anyone else done this?

I made something with metallic thread a few years ago and remember it being horrible stuff!

Foresttheout · 23/09/2020 06:29

fluffy those are beautiful, I always mean to do a wintry village scene but I'd need to start in January to have it finished in time

NoWordForFluffy · 23/09/2020 06:49

Here he is, @CrochetBug!

@Winterfellismyhome, I love yours! Which company is the sleigh one? And how big is 'massive'?! I'm sure you'll get it done. Xmas Smile

@Lonelykettleshed, I love Historical ones. I did a baby sampler recently and have a Advent one to do too. My only complaint with the one I've done was how tiny the chart was! I think it warranted A3 paper / two sheets of A4. 😂

@Foresttheout, the church was my first and took 3 months, the toy shop took 2 1/2 months, but with some trips away where I forgot to take the damn thing, it was more like 2 in total.

I'm doing something more simple once I've given my eyes a break for a week!

Can i have a little proud moment here? I started making a cross stitch advent calendar when dd1 was newborn (and i was full of optimism).

I finally finished it just before her 4th Christmas last year, but i don’t get to show it off to anyone because it only comes out for our family at Christmas.

There are pockets for each of our (small) extended family, which is why many of them are a little idiosyncratic (eg space invaders, doctor who, cats) but i have never completed a big project like this and i am so so proud of myself Smile

A few more of my favourites (the Robin is a Wrendale for pp who was looking for that sort of design).

This is gorgeous, well done. I am envious of your perseverance, I never stick with a project for that long!

@Winterfellismyhome, 50 pages? I hope it's massive font! 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 23/09/2020 13:27

That's adorable, @RubaiyatOfAnyone! Xmas Smile

ChequerBoard · 23/09/2020 15:38

OK I've just ordered some more Christmas tree decoration kits and some pre-punched card gift tags I can personalise for the family's gifts and I'm blaming this thread!

Parkandride · 23/09/2020 15:49

Ooh I love this thread, I'd love to make something for for future dc, they're not arriving until 2021 so I have time! You're all very talented

PickAChew · 23/09/2020 16:09

Somr lovely stuff, here. My poor hands struggle a lot with cross stitch but I love some of the wrendale designs. We have some wren Dale placemats which Ds2 loves.

CrochetBug · 23/09/2020 16:13

Oh that donkey is adorable @NoWordForFluffy

I love the advent calendar @RubaiyatOfAnyone! Love the personalised touches.

I've got to finish this and eleventy million crochet projects before I start anything new

Loving everyone's work!

This is embarrassing with all the amazing pieces on display here. But these are a couple of the small Mouseloft kits for any beginners (like me!) that might feel the bigger kits are too difficult to start with.

I haven't attached them properly to the cards yet, as I think I'll try to find something more Christmassy looking. But I'm happy with the designs for cute little cards this year.

I aim for bigger things next year!

I would love to do something like your advent calender RubaiyatOfAnyone!

ChippyTea16 · 23/09/2020 19:37

@IfeellikeaJoan they are adorable!

I've ordered various bits now so hoping they come soon! Including beginner's kits and a larger one that hopefully won't be too complicated. I can't wait to start now!

I have made my DH grandparents a cross stitch with theirs, their kids, grandkids and great grandchildren's names in the style of a scrabble board all interconnected. Not particularly Christmassy but makes a lovely keepsake gift for someone

They are beautiful. I have done the last one too - it's a good job that I like french knots.
NoWordForFluffy · 23/09/2020 22:06

Is all the snow French knots?! God, no; not one for me! 😂

Foresttheout · 24/09/2020 10:20

I love the wrendale designs but sadly I'm not in the UK and can't get anything delivered I messaged them a while ago and was told they've no plans to offer patterns only anytime soon.
Any suggestions for christmas scenes available as digital downloads? I can access DMC threads locally so if they come with a colour chart I just make up my own kit

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/09/2020 10:53

Thank you all so much for the kind words - I know it's not as fancy as many of the ones on this thread (and badly in need of an iron after being rolled up since last advent) but I luffs it Grin

@Zofloramummy I love that Noel one of yours - truly beautiful.

BiddyPop · 24/09/2020 12:39

The World of Cross Stitching magazine have a website with some free small patterns, including a few Christmas ones. Home page here

I know I have some angels printed from a website where the lady does a new design every year, but can't find those now. But while looking, I came across this website which seems to be quite interesting for patterns and techniques. I'm going to go back myself later for a good browse.

The DMC's own website is also good for some interesting patterns, some are paid and lots are free. DMC

ChippyTea16 · 24/09/2020 14:15

@Foresttheout where abouts are you? I am also not in the UK and I just ordered some patterns from 123Stitch.com they have some kits and patterns like this winter scene one Winter Scene

@Zofloramummy they are beautiful! Love the one with the snow
