10 and 7 year old. Both enjoy board games.
I'd like to get them one decent game each that they will manage and we can play as a family.

Ideas are-Cards against humanity family edition
Ticket to ride - first journey Europe
Catan- junior
Carcassonne
Operation

We already have and enjoy Dobble, Labyrinth, Monopoly, Quirkle, Exploding kittens, Zombie dice, pass the pigs.

I don't want to frustrate them with overly difficult games. If you could pick one game each for the 10yo and 7yo which would you choose?

MNHQ Update
We appreciate this thread is a little old now, but if you’ve come across it while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability and new releases. It’s been compiled based on advice from Mumsnet users as well as consumer reviews with fun for the whole family in mind. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

I was going to suggest Carcassonne!

Rummikub is a good one, from age 7+. My 8yo regularly beats DH and I and is quite sneaky and tactical! Little bigger! It's basically the card game rummy (sets of three numbers) but played with tiles like Scrabble. It comes out regularly.

My boys are 10 and 14 now, both enjoyed Carcassonne and adult Ticket to Ride for several years. If you want other suggestions I'd look at Azul (which is 2-4 people, simple enough for my 6 yr old to play, enough strategy to keep adults interested) or Skyjo.

My kids like The Game of Life, also Monopoly but it takes hours. Connect four, Othello, but they are 2-player only. We have Cluedo but they don’t love it. Uno is very popular.

Ricekrispie22 · 19/08/2020 07:01

DS loves Cluedo at the moment.

LazyDaisy10 · 19/08/2020 07:47

Mine like the london board game at the moment also scatergorries gets played alot, 6 year old can be on a team and enjoys this even though it says 13+ I'd say 7 -8 would be fine

Horizons83 · 19/08/2020 07:49

The London Game is great.

BikeRunSki · 19/08/2020 07:49

Ticket to Ride was a big hit last Christmas when the dc were 8 and 11.

brackengirl · 19/08/2020 07:56

We play a lot of games, I'd recommend Ticket to Ride- junior is good for 7 yr old and to play independently but my 7 and 9 year old have got the hang of the adult version during lockdown, they also love Zooloretto, Jaipur, Monopoly Deal and Skyjo.

I really enjoy Azul and think kids could learn relatively easily and other possibles could be Kingdomino and Niagara- there are so many good games out there! Board Game Geek is a good place to start and we often watch YouTube videos to get the hang of a new game which is much easier for kids than reading all the rules which seem really complicated at the start.

abouttogoon · 19/08/2020 08:03

Sequence is good

MeanMrMustardSeed · 19/08/2020 08:05

We love ticket to ride first journey. My game loving 30 year old brother loves playing it as a quick TTR even though it’s aimed at children. I think we’ll keep playing it alongside proper TTR when we have half an hour and want something not too involved.

Operation is an awful game (I had wanted it throughout childhood) and was delighted when I got rid of it unnoticed one day!

One2Three4Five6 · 19/08/2020 10:23

Fluxx is a good one, quick to learn and lots of different versions (pirate, wizard of Oz, Cthulu etc)
Munchkin is another fantastic one that we enjoy, very competitive at times.
My DC really enjoy Sheriff of Nottingham, you have to lie bluff and get your goods through the market without being caught with contraband. Great to suss out your kids 'tells' when they are lying for future too ;)
Tsuro, very quick game, last man standing wins. 5-10 min play time, so great if you want to fit in a quick game.
King of Tokyo.
Takenoko is a lovely game.
Throw throw burrito is a fun, quick based game, it's like a combination between card game and dodgeball, you throw foam burritos at eachother if you get certain combinations of cards. It can be hilarious.
My 8 year old has been playing all of the above from 6+ and has no issue with them. Plus the ones you've already mentioned.
We have stacks of games in my house so I love threads like this :D

Have a look at Wil Wheatons tabletop youtube channel, gives loads of ideas for games.

One2Three4Five6 · 19/08/2020 10:24

Ultimate werewolf is great too, my DD8 absolutely loves this one.

Carouselfish · 19/08/2020 10:36

We buy ones from our 80s childhood. Go For It, Bird in the Hand, for ten and seven yr old respectively?

Jackparlabane · 19/08/2020 10:54

Fluxx and Carcassonne are popular with my 8yo (ignore the farmers in Carcassonne).
For 10yo adult TtR or Catan, but also Sushi Go, Chrononauts or Mapominoes

TalesOfStepford · 19/08/2020 11:31

We are huge boardgames fans. My two are teenagers now but our favourites when they were the age your two are were:

Rat a Tat Cat : a card game but there's a new great board game version called Rat a Tat Roll which is just as engaging and easy to play.
Forbidden Island : a co-operative game where you all play together to stop the Island sinking.
Survive! : get your people to safety via boats before they're attacked by sharks or the Volcano explodes.
Carcassonne : as others have said it's great fun, addictive and easy to learn, plus there's a Junior version which we still occasionally play.

Enjoy falling down the rabbit hole of board game research!

Voiceofreason92 · 19/08/2020 16:48

Try Pyramids of Pengqueen
Zombie Kidz evolution

Both are great family games

We love carcassonne and TtoR but the ones above are amazing too

Avoid Operation. Absolute pile of crap. Will last 10 mins and you wont get it out again

FlySheMust · 19/08/2020 16:51

All the versions of Ticket to Ride are very good.

Bluewavescrashing · 19/08/2020 16:52

Thank you!

Avoiding Operation 😁 I've gone for Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride first journey. Looking forward to playing them!

Monopoly Deal is a card based version of (what we now call) Big Monopoly. You can play a game in15 minutes and lose everything on the laying of one card.
My DGC - 7,9,10 love this game, only occasionally getting a strop 😂.

LoeliaPonsonby · 19/08/2020 16:56

Kingdomino.

latticechaos · 19/08/2020 16:59

We love Agricola, Fluxx, Harry Potter Cluedo, Port Royal, Mapominoes in addition to the other suggestions above.

pinkbalconyrailing · 19/08/2020 17:01

azul is a very pretty, tactile game.

latticechaos · 19/08/2020 17:01

Had this recommended by two people, next on my list!

Whathappenedtothelego · 19/08/2020 17:19

I like threads like this.
My DC (13 and 9) are big board games fans, and are always going back to Ticket to Ride.
We also like really Articulate kids, Zooloretto, Labyrinth and Cluedo.
And another surprising popular one is A La Carte - it involves flipping pancake cards with little mini frying pans, and I always lose, much to DCs delight.
