10 and 7 year old. Both enjoy board games.
I'd like to get them one decent game each that they will manage and we can play as a family.

Ideas are-Cards against humanity family edition
Ticket to ride - first journey Europe
Catan- junior
Carcassonne
Operation

We already have and enjoy Dobble, Labyrinth, Monopoly, Quirkle, Exploding kittens, Zombie dice, pass the pigs.

I don't want to frustrate them with overly difficult games. If you could pick one game each for the 10yo and 7yo which would you choose?

MNHQ Update
We appreciate this thread is a little old now, but if you’ve come across it while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability and new releases. It’s been compiled based on advice from Mumsnet users as well as consumer reviews with fun for the whole family in mind. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

Love letter (simple card game,), labyrinth, forbidden island, uno, are family favourites here

TFSRM · 19/08/2020 21:28

Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride are excellent choices. Both get played a lot in our house.

I'd add Scotland Yard and Harry Potter Cluedo plus Banagrams has been a surprise hit recently for us.

Camel Up is fab. Also like monopoly empire and the monopoly passport one (think it’s here and now or something like that...). All nice length and straightforward. Ticket to ride is awesome though!

Bluewavescrashing · 19/08/2020 21:39

We already have Camel Up but have never played it as the lengthy instructions put us off! I will look up a YouTube video for it and actually try it out though.

Think I'm going to try Christmas Monopoly this year. Smile

winterisstillcoming · 19/08/2020 21:44

Monopoly empire is good. I second Rummikub too. Milleborne is good too.

Settlers of Catan is great, but you don't need the junior version. My 7&8 year olds play the adult version with no problems.

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/08/2020 13:05

Ages ago there was a guy on The Chase who was a board game nerd and Bradley asked him what he though the best board game was. He recommeneded this one..

Takenoko

I'd never heard of it but got it for my nephews for xmas, they're all big board game players. My brother says it's excellent.

thetrolleywitch · 20/08/2020 13:19

This is going to be an expensive thread for me! Have added so many of the suggestions to my wishlist. My suggestions in return are Narnia risk which is very different to the adult version but brilliant and a second (or third) for Labyrinth.

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2020 13:40

For people who like Labrinth, did you know about Magic Labrinth? It’s 3D, there are hidden walls under the board.

BrieAndChilli · 20/08/2020 13:44

The London board game
Pandemic (quite complicated though)
Sherlock Holmes
Banana grams
Family edition trivial pursuit (has kids and adult questions)
Exploding kittens
Ramen fury
Wikipedia board game
Split second

Flatpackback · 20/08/2020 13:45

Linkee - good fun, very simple, no complicated rules.

Shock exciting!

Agree this could be an expensive thread

latticechaos · 20/08/2020 13:59

Failed to wait for Christmas, just googled Narnia Risk....

Exposition · 20/08/2020 14:02

Noooo- don't get the Junior versions of anything at their ages!
Junior ticket to ride is far too simple for a 10yo (additional needs aside, obviously).

I'd recommend Sheriff of Nottingham, Cash and Guns, and Machi Koro.
Or Takenoko.

Exposition · 20/08/2020 14:04

Scotland Yard is really good too....but so flipping tense!

pinkbalconyrailing · 20/08/2020 14:15

one for up to 6 players:
www.amazon.co.uk/Ravensburger-26425-4-Hexentanz-Game/dp/B000MVZXFE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=hexentanz&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1597929279&sr=8-1

it's a bit like ludo, but the colours are hidden.

4forkssake · 20/08/2020 14:38

Scotland Yard

WendyHoused · 20/08/2020 14:48

King of Tokyo was a big hit with ours. We have most of ther others mentioned and like them too.

Equimum · 20/08/2020 15:43

I would definitely recommend TTR first journey for the seven year old. My 7 year old loves it, and he likes many of the games you have. He also loves Rummikub.

Your 10 year old might like Risk. My 7 yo has just started playing. He doesn’t have the patience etc for a full games but is getting the idea (he usually starts playing with one of us, then we finish the game after bedtime).

LazyDaisy10 · 20/08/2020 17:13

I just ordered scotland yard will a 6 year old be ok to play?

thismeansnothing · 20/08/2020 17:22

Game of life
5 second rule
Monopoly
Labarynth

Mol1628 · 20/08/2020 17:37

Big board game fans here! One of the kids favourites is Blockus. You can get it in two or four player versions. It’s one they often pick up and play independently without needing parental input.

CrooksAndNannies · 20/08/2020 17:41

Just come in to recommend Blokus. But I see someone has just beaten to it!
