When do you put up your decorations?

I am sat here just itching to put mine up! I probably would of already if I didn't have a dog and small child sprawled across me effectively restraining me from the oh so tempting call of the twinkly lights! 😁

Where does everybody else stand on this? Are yours up already or are you waiting?

1st December for the decorations, around the 12th for the tree as always have a real one.

AppleBlossomArseCheeks · 25/11/2018 09:40

I normally put them up on the 1st but putting them up on the 12th this year after having a particularly bad year I don't want any more bad luck so 12 days before and then taking them down 12 days after

BarbedBloom · 25/11/2018 17:26

We will be putting it up next weekend (1st). We normally do second weekend in December but have plans this year

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2018 17:29

Ours go up no sooner than a week before Christmas. This year it'll be the 20th or 21st. If DH had his way the tree wouldn't go up until Christmas Eve but I overrule him. They stay up until 5th or 6th January.

HelenaJustina · 25/11/2018 17:32

Usually around the second Sunday of Advent

MiddlingMum · 25/11/2018 17:43

Ours go up on maybe the 21st or 22nd, and come down before breakfast on the first. I like them but only for a very limited time and they just make the house feel more cluttered.

Having said that, I love seeing other people's up early as I often go running after dark.

Bearbehind · 25/11/2018 17:48

1st December and down before New Year.

Unless you are very religious I genuinely don’t understand why you would want your tree still up in January.

Much better to have it up for longer in the run up to Christmas than hanging around when Christmas is over.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 25/11/2018 17:58

Up on the 1st December and down by the 30th. I also dislike my tree being up for New Years.

Kemer2018 · 25/11/2018 17:59

1st December

DuploRelatedInjury · 25/11/2018 18:02

Literally the only good thing about DHs insistence on a real tree is that I don't have to decorate until well into December.

Christmas songs and films are acceptable from December 1st. As are mince pies and other Christmassy snacks. The only exception to this rule is for festive menu hot chocolates, which are fine as soon as they appear in coffee shops.

Onecutefox · 25/11/2018 18:14

We will put the decorations on once we buy the tree and that will happen when the prices go down. Not in a hurry.

Onecutefox · 25/11/2018 18:15

We keep the tree nearly up to the end of January Grin.

OutPinked · 25/11/2018 19:04

Always the first of December.

Petalflowers · 25/11/2018 19:07

Usually around 10-14 days before Christmas, whenever the weekend falls. This weekend will probably be around 15th December.

If we re home, we have a real tree. If we are away, then we’ll have the fake one.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/11/2018 19:09

15th for us this year. I leave them up until Twelfth night.

Taffeta · 25/11/2018 19:43

8th/9th Dec and take them down 2 Jan

ItsJustASimpleLine · 25/11/2018 19:45

1st December and down 27th or 28th. DD birthday New Years Day so what get Christmas all cleared away before her day. Also, I have always thought the tree looks a bit sad after Xmas, it's fulfilled it's purpose and is just waiting to be put away.

Onecutefox · 25/11/2018 22:15

What's the point of buying a real tree if it's only for a week or two? Such a waste.

PerverseConverse · 25/11/2018 22:31

@Onecutefox the choosing and buying of our annual Christmas tree is s family tradition that I've loved since as far back as I can remember. I can't imagine just getting the same tree out of the loft each year. Artificial trees have no soul in my opinion. My tree is like a guest in our home and is THE focal point. It's decorated with baubles from when I was a little girl (I'm in my 40s now), ones I've collected from New York on various trips, ones made by the children, newer classier ones, old favourites etc but each one hold a memory. Each year the tree is different in many ways but the same in the story it tells except with a few new chapters. It wouldn't be Christmas to me without a real tree.

Onecutefox · 26/11/2018 07:57

@PerverseConverse, I know what you mean and that is why we also buy a real tree but keep it for a bit longer as it is still alive and beautiful.

JemSynergy · 26/11/2018 10:11

I used to put it up a few days before Christmas but it has been going up earlier and earlier every year. We usually put it up the second week of December but I like to keep it up until the 1st Jan because I love the lights up for NYE and for my birthday on the 30th Dec. I never understand people who put the tree up in November and then rush to take it down on Boxing Day. I don't like putting it up too early as it just feels like a long waiting game until Christmas for the children otherwise.

tenlordsaleaping · 26/11/2018 10:15

We are all different, as a kid I remember being so excited I could burst the evening we got the tree and decorations out of the loft - made not one jot of difference to my excitement that it wasn't a real one. We always did it in the evening so we could switch off the lights and switch on the tree lights, mum always baked sausage rolls and mince pies - it became an event!

I switched to a fake tree ten years ago after 20 years of a real one in my own house and wouldn't go back because it works for me. A ££££ Balsam Hill tree owes me nothing at this point in its life.

fromtheshires · 26/11/2018 11:04

I normally do the first Sunday of December as this was my grandparents and my parents tradition also so I have just followed suit. It was put up with Chritmas music on, followed by a christmas film.

With December starting on a weekend this year I may hold off putting the tree up until 9th as it really does seem to early. I dont want to break the tradition though!

giveovermypreciousss · 26/11/2018 11:23

I caved last night. My dc had been watching our neighbours put all the decs up so I gave in. would normally do it on the 1st Dec. The dc are very happy and we now have more time on Saturday to do advent stuff. 😂

PerverseConverse · 26/11/2018 11:24

@Onecutefox sorry, yes, just read your previous post in context and realised what you were actually saying. I shouldn't post when half asleep Blush
