How do you decorate your tree and with what colours?

I've never had my own tree, always been at my parents. Getting one this year and I think I'm gonna get mainly silver decorations with a few blue for some colour and use warm coloured lights. Can't wait to decorate. Grin

I have black and silver decorations (including tinsel!) but have multi coloured led lights on it too

Meet0nTheIedge · 11/10/2018 14:05

Bright multi-coloured lights and decorations here, mainly gold, silver, green, red, blue. I'm not keen on white lights or colour schemes.

Buddyelf · 11/10/2018 14:09

We have 2 trees. We have one real one that has white lights with silver and white decorations. No beads or tinsel. The other is an artificial tree and more colourful, we have warm lights and a whole mix of decorations, ones the kids have made and ones we have collected over the years.

EdinaMonsoon · 11/10/2018 14:10

The tree in the sitting room is gold and silver but all in muted/antique tones. The one in the den has a scandi theme: red gingham ribbons & silver baubles/bells etc.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 11/10/2018 14:18

We have a very eclectic tree with decorations that I’ve picked up over the last few years. Any time we had a big event happen that year (got married, had dd etc) got a decoration to mark it, and it’s lovely looking back as we put them on the tree.
I’ve got a few off Not On The High Street which are lovely.

Talcott2007 · 11/10/2018 14:18

Our tree is a real eclectic mix - decorations collected over the years and made/gifted by others, nothing matches bright and just a bit of fun..... DM on the other hand takes Xmas REALLY seriously. It genuinely takes her 3 full days to get all of her decorations on their tree and 3 days to remove and meticulously pack away it all....you can barely see of the actual tree. It makes mine look positively restrained and sparse!!!

GoingNuckingFuts · 11/10/2018 14:19

we have a 7ft artificial tree i got in the January sale for 7 quid one year, i tend to decorate my tree to coordinate with my living room last year and this year it will be red with gold i use a wide ribbon and burlap instead of tinsel i have a few large statement baubles and figures and fill in the gaps with smaller ones something along these lines

@Talcott2007 i am exactly like your mother my tree is my pride and joy! i may be even worse i wont let anyone near it only my son and husband once it is decorated to put the star on the top as its a little tradition every year i take a photo of them doing it he is 11 now and that is the only time anyone is allowed near my tree! im the same with my Christmas day dinner table! yes i am a bit anal!

Buddyelf · 11/10/2018 14:28

GoingNuckingFuts that tree is beautiful!

BluePheasant · 11/10/2018 14:35

I love the traditional reds, golds and greens with warm white lights. Our tree always makes the room feel so cosy in the evenings.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 11/10/2018 14:58

Our main tree is just glass ornaments and lights. We have a weird mix of traditional christmas things like santas, snowmen, trees, owls wearing santa hats, nutcrackers and non traditional things like flamingos, crocodiles, dinosaurs and gnomes.

In the playroom, we have a tree covered in tinsel and random decorations, quite a lot of which dc1 picked. It's topped by a pink glittery elephant that one of my aunts bought me when I was very little.

We also have one in the front hall which is all red gingham, snowflakes and unpainted snowmen/reindeer.

This is making me want to put them up already.

GoingNuckingFuts · 11/10/2018 15:23

@Buddyelf thank you very much, that isn't actually my tree but its sort of how it looks, different ornaments and such but the ribbon is the same and is attached the same way,

@Dinosauratemydaffodils a house in my DMIL had their decos up last week!! i mean REALLY!!

MirandaWest · 11/10/2018 16:08

We have one real tree and many artificial ones. With all sorts of colours on each Smile

MsSquiz · 11/10/2018 16:25

Our tree is decorated with a real mix of baubles, mainly reds and browns. We started off with a cheapish generic pack of baubles and have added lots of individual baubles. We always get at least 1 new bauble each year so our tree tells a bit of a story.

We have one that we bought in the airport in Mexico - all bright colours and heavy ceramic
2 small glass bottle with cork stoppers that hold little white feathers from the Imaginarium in York
3 small white angels from the York Minster shop
A small wooden bell with a tiny nativity scene carved in it from the Edinburgh Christmas market
6 small hand decorated ceramic gingerbread people from the Newcastle Christmas market

There are also a few decorations we have that used to be my Nana's, my Auntie's and my Mum's, which I love

ileclerc · 11/10/2018 16:34

I had beautiful trees until the kids came along. Now I have to sit on my hands and let them decorate with a load of random stuff that they've chosen. I need a big enough house for two tees!

Guiltypleasures001 · 11/10/2018 16:46

Hi

I've been looking for unusual/luxury/sparkly novelty tree decs
I wonder if the Xmas mafia have any pointers or tips?

Cheers

Ohanabanana · 11/10/2018 16:47

I have two and I think my taste is pretty similar to Edina’s- one with gold decs but all muted and non-shiny plus a few cream ones thrown in. Main tree is mainly red and white, lots of painted wood and little quirky toy decs, we love it 😍

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 11/10/2018 17:06

@Dinosauratemydaffodils a house in my DMIL had their decos up last week!! i mean REALLY!!

Oh stop, that’s hilarious!

I mean if you need to start dusting your Christmas tree, isn’t that an indication you’ve put it up a bit too early...?

SymphonyofShadows · 11/10/2018 17:23

I usually get a couple of new baubles each year, my tree is quite eclectic. I make rock star angels for the top of the tree, with wings, I've had Lemmy, Bowie and Prince Buster. This year it will be Chas Hodges. I'm going to get some of the retro kitsch 50's glass decorations that are everywhere at the moment. I've already bought the phone/cassette player etc ones from M&S and I fancy the sugar skull ones from Paperchase.

Santaclarita · 11/10/2018 17:54

I've changed my mind. Had a look at some trees with silver and blue decorations and it looks nothing like how I pictured in my head. Looks too cold. Going back to red and gold. Grin

Our overriding style is "mismash". Decorations collected for over 30 years, including some much-loved ones made by the DC when they were small.

We love getting them out of the box and unwrapping them all each December, I can't imagine going out and buying a whole set of new ones, but if I was starting now, I'd go for traditional gold and red with some natural materials. I might not choose to have a violently pink Hama Bead angel on the top Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 11/10/2018 18:15

@Santaclarita what about midnight blue and gold baubles? For example blue baubles from here.

I have my main tree which is red, gold and ivory. The small tree in the dining room is Cadbury purple and gold. I have moved house this year and have enough room for a tree in the hall which I plan to be loosely peacock colours - teal, green, fuchsia, purple and gold.

purplecorkheart · 11/10/2018 18:21

I decorate mine with stain glass angels from a local craft shop. I have been buying them up for years in the January sales. I use clear lights behind them

dementedpixie · 11/10/2018 18:22

This was mine last year

TheWoollybacksWife Blue and gold looks nice but I'm loving the nostalgia of red and gold now. By Christmas it will probably have every colour on it though. Grin
