Sorry to hear that IHeartPineapple but I'm sure she'd appreciate a little pick me up. Do you know if she prefers sweet or savoury?

MrsLoveChristmas · 12/12/2013 12:01

ILiveInAPineapple sorry not heart

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 12/12/2013 12:04

She doesn't eat white choc but eats anything else!

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 12/12/2013 12:05

And she likes sweet and savoury

lilylaville · 12/12/2013 12:05

What about the flavourly boxes? You could get a three month subscription for during the recovery?

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 12/12/2013 12:06

Ooooh Lilly that's a nice idea, will have a look now

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 12/12/2013 12:12

My box of OMGWHYDIDIBOTHER finally turned up! It contained 2 wristbands, 2 packets of moshi stickers and a sample of a JW book that's quite old!
I know it was free, but it's a big disappointment nonetheless! The box was the same size as a DVD box from Amazon.

Ilive - I've been in your friend's position and would say definitely go for little pampering things for her - nice lip salve and hand sanitiser and cream if she is in and out of hospital lots as it's very hot and dry in there. Is there something she likes to drink - travel cup/water bottle and a nice bottle of squash? Box of coffee bags so she can just pour hot water on them and have a decent coffee rather than hospital coffee. A magazine or book of short stories - something that you can dip in and out of as chances are that she will be in shock and won't want to have to concentrate for long.

Does she have any dc? Any practical help - picking them up, helping do a load of washing, a meal for the freezer and so on would all be really helpful. A telephone number and the assurance that she can call at any time for anything - to talk, a lift to the hospital even in the middle of the night, or looking after kids at short notice so she can do something - even it it's just so she can escape for a walk by herself or wander around somewhere that's not the hospital is good.

Don't get flowers though - they are one more thing that needs to be looked after and if you don't then they die. Which is something that you really don't want to be thinking about when you are all on edge about your dh is fighting for his life - you start seeing silly parallels in things and you don't want to but you can't help it. (my dh was 40 and he's now fine so fingers crossed it's the same for your friend's dh.)

They'll also need support after her dh is released, they really aren't supposed to do very much at all to start with - even lifting a fork is an effort - and you just worry about them lots so you don't want to go out and leave them on their own - but knowing that somebody could be in the house with them to look after them so you could go out for a short while and do your own shopping, have a walk, helps you to keep your own sanity otherwise it's very easy to become tied in to the house which isn't good for either of you!

Bluetinkerbell · 12/12/2013 12:22

I'm buying a gift card of a champagne afternoon tea at Fortnum and Masons for my amazing brother and his partner. I wanted to get a little something from there to add to the gift card. Are there any free delivery codes knocking about? I've seen a tea towel on eBay but not sure Hmm

TheOneWithTheHair · 12/12/2013 12:37

Yes Reastie, except now we're all buying chocolate! Xmas Shock

Maybe we should resurrect MM in the new year. I know I'll need it!

Aintnobodylovesnanbetter · 12/12/2013 12:38

Zipzap - thanks for the ideas, have given her permission to call me day or night already and she has family to help with her girls.

I think I will make her up a little box with some of your suggestions, she would like that, and i will send her one flavourly as well as a treat.

thanks, and good point about the flowers Sad

Reastie · 12/12/2013 12:41

wanna - how about this red florist's ribbon - it's about 2 cm wide and you can get a 100 yard roll for £4 including delivery. Tie it around your present, leave plenty at either end then split the end into a few strands and twizzle it against a scissor blade and you end up with a big mass of ribbon ringlets on your present. My mum had this when I was little and we used to help her do the twizzly bits from about the age of 4-5 so it really isn't difficult to do despite my somewhat convoluted explanation Grin (and I still do it now, I have a stash of a range of colours...)

Then you could team it with some thin gold metallic curling ribbon that could work as one or two stripes along the red ribbon and would also curl so you would end up with red and gold ribbon twizzles... (the gold ribbon is £3.79 for 250m)

Looks very pretty, very traditionally festive! And buying the big reels makes it much much cheaper than buying it in the little 40m rolls on the high street!

If you like the thin curling ribbon but are happy with the matt version rather than the metallic one, it's lots cheaper - just search on ebay for curling ribbon 500m and there are loads of rolls in all sorts of different colours from about £2.60 a roll...

lilylaville · 12/12/2013 12:48

What great plains dress?????? Aargh I think I'm losing out on something here. Lol

3bunnies · 12/12/2013 12:51

Finally gave in to my inner twitch and got some more story cubes I got three different types with three dice each. They were only slightly bargainous once postage was added but they had all three types in stock so one for each stocking and they do all play with the one set we already have so will hopefully make interesting additions.

Also ordered a hair turban for their swimming theme presents. Must stop twitching!

dandelionsRflowers · 12/12/2013 12:53

Just recieved my Body Shop stuff from wherever it was, so pleased as I'd given up hope and cancelled all my subscriptions as it was almost the end of the trials. The mini tool kit turned up before the magazines and has been used already. i'm off to Aldi for some slippers and whatever else finds it's way into my trolley

zipzap · 12/12/2013 12:54

Ilive - I've just thought of something else. When in that position you tend to get told loads of information so a nice notebook with a couple of pens would be good, something that can be used to keep all the info in one place. Plus a file to put it all in - just one of those plastic wallet envelope type things or the ones with the elastic holding the corners together rather than a ring folder or a lever arch one, so that you can add the myriad of leaflets, forms and whatnots that you get and have them all in one place.

You will know the size of her handbag - might be worth getting an A5 sized one if it will fit in her bag? Or sticking it all into one of those reusable tote bags (especially if it has a zip or fastener to keep it secure) so that she has a hospital bag she can grab and know that it has what she needs in it.

It's worth sticking a page of numbers into the back of the book - or front - it doesn't always occur to you at the time when you are thinking about everything else - but if she has a page which has all the telephone numbers you can think of that will help, and that she start to actively add to - things like the hospital, ICU, local taxi companies, friends, GP's surgery, cardiac recovery ward, pizza delivery, British heart foundation (lots of useful info on their site and in their leaflets) - really, numbers for all situations - it becomes very useful. And also means that it acts as a prompt for collecting the numbers. And if she is tired or whatever, she can just hand the book to someone to ring for her. hope that makes sense! Everyone obviously has their own way of dealing with things but sometimes having somebody point out the obvious (in a nice way!) is really helpful because your brain is so focused on the other stuff you forget the ordinary stuff.

Also are there any sweets she likes - mints, jelly babies, fruit pastilles etc - the sort of thing that you can use to have one every now and again to stop your mouth from drying up even if you're not hungry.

zipzap · 12/12/2013 12:56

Amazon deal of the day is DKNY fragrances - between 50-78% off. No idea what they smell like though - might make sure I pop out and check as I need some new perfume and they've stopped doing the old perfume I used to wear...

DifferentNow · 12/12/2013 12:56

Does anyone have a spare M&S code I could have please? Thanks

Thank you so much Reastie and everyone else who has contributed to these amazing threads.

Frozenatchristmas · 12/12/2013 13:03

Right, getting mightly pissed off with Beer52. Did my subscription a month ago. Still not got the first lot of beer. Damaged or missing in the delivery process apparently and now they have taken the second full payment of £24 from my account!

Their phones never work and they take days to answer e-mails. Not best pleased at all.

NotSoNewNow · 12/12/2013 13:09

These threads are amazing! Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed!! ThanksWineThanksWineThanks I've picked up a few of the amazon bargains. The colour change flowers finally arrived and are fab!!

Wondering whether anyone has any inspiration for me era gift for my dsis-in law? She's very into her brands and luxury goods but my budget is max £20. I usually cop out and get her candles(or similar). She had very neutral (bland taste, very main stream). Help??!??

notsomuchroomattheinn · 12/12/2013 13:10

I think Beer52 have been struggling to meet demand Frozen someone started a thread about them yesterday as they had had no beers yet.
