I always feel a bit nervous of Xmas craft threads as most people on them are very accomplished and talented! Whereas I am neither :o

So if you are attempting craft for the first time this year come and tell me about it.

This week I made a costume for DD (had to be a superhero for children in need) and I am so proud of myself as it turned out pretty good. I've always wanted to do stuff like that but am only just coming out of a several-years-long phase of hideously low motivation/self esteem etc. Am actually a bit sad to think of all the things I could have made for my young DCs if only I'd tried!

Anyway I'll stop waffling now. What are you making? My main wish is an outfit for DS - he adores Fix It Felix so I'll be hopefully making that.

I got mine from eBay, I can't find the exact ones on there now but there are loads of different ones on there :)

IsThatTrue · 18/11/2013 20:53

whistle I never knew what to do with my Nan's old button tin I inherited! :) I've just ordered blank cards so me and the kids can get making :) thanks for the idea!

OneUp · 18/11/2013 21:04

I managed to make LO an apron this year which is the first thing I've sewn since I was about 9. I'm trying to do Christmas stockings too but lost the material.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 18/11/2013 21:33

I am going to try and make own bauble but keep loosing links, clear baubles that fix together...

enormouse · 19/11/2013 11:54

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm a newbie crafter too. I've started making an advent string. A bit like this one:
www.dotcomgiftshop.com/string-christmastree-advent-calende
I've bought some lovely beaded string and some mini pegs from sainsburys. I've used some of DSs old baby socks for some of the pockets. He has some little fair isle ones that are perfect. I think I'm going to make some salt dough decorations for the rest of the string.

IsThatTrue · 19/11/2013 14:10

I made some Christmas trees out of Hama beads this morning and glued them onto some of the brown parcel tags, they look fab, not sure who to use them for yet though Grin maybe if I make a few different shapes I can do a shape each for the dcs and DN? Hmm

TicTacZebra · 19/11/2013 14:16

I'm going to make my DC a stocking this year. I want to have a go at making a garland too but I have no idea where to start.

TheYamiOfYawn · 19/11/2013 14:54

I have just made a prototype fabric covered notebook and it is looking pretty good.

I will have to go and get some ribbons and buttons to decorate the ones I'll be giving as presents and am about to start work on some bunting, tree bunting and a felt garland from the mantlepiece. For the felt I am torn between doing hearts or snowflakes.

IsThatTrue · 19/11/2013 18:24

Ooo snowflakes for a tag design, I wonder if I have enough white Hama beads?! So trees, snowflakes, er.... Not sure a bauble would work in Hama beads it's just look like a circle Hmm any ideas anyone?

Decorated notebook, now there's since little gift, where did you get the books from Yami?

Lovely thread!

TheOneWithTheHair · 19/11/2013 20:39

Hama bead shapes on the tags is genius. I'm doing that.

I've just made my first ever Christmas wreath. (pic on profile). Now I'm thinking it needs some small, silver baubles sewn on too. Opinions greatly appreciated.

fuzzpig · 19/11/2013 20:54

You can get bags of 1000 Hama beads in single colours. Including stuff like silver and glow in the dark!

I'm glad the thread is proving helpful :o

I started the fix it Felix outfit tonight. Have glued the felt for the logo together and will stitch it another day when it's dry. That's for the hat. Then I did a test run of embroidery (it's been a long time!) as I need to do the word Felix for the shirt badge. Amazingly I can still do a mean chain stitch :o

raisah, the snowflakes in that thread are the ones I plan to try when I make my last few candy canes over the weekend! Thanks for the reminder to get some white paper in town with the girls on Saturday Smile

Hama bead tags sound fun to maybe do with my girls...if there's any time.left in between all the other bits I'd like to try & sorting the shithole house out Grin

IsThatTrue · 19/11/2013 21:25

theonewiththehair I can't see your pic (only what appears to be a fighter jet cake?!) but instead of small baubles have you thought of silver bells instead? May be slightly smaller and give a nice jingle sometimes.

The Hama bead shapes on tags was a Pinterest idea. I spend way too much time there!

I have got 8 trees done and I've just started the snowflakes. Ds2 is not cooperating though and won't sleep.

fuzzpig · 19/11/2013 21:30

For those snowflakes I'm thinking of using newspaper or something else old (although we do have 2 whole reams of paper)

OP posts:
lucysmam · 19/11/2013 21:36

ooh, newspaper is a good idea fuzz, I have shedloads of blummin metros lying around that really should either be put to use or in the recycling Grin

TheOneWithTheHair · 19/11/2013 21:59

Blush That is a Star Wars x-wing for ds2's b'day.

I think it's on now. The poinsettia flowers are at the bottom. Bells is a great idea but might drive dh mad.

IsThatTrue · 19/11/2013 22:44

It's lovely theone I'm not sure it needs anything else tbh!

Well I've made 8 Christmas tree and 8 snowflake gift tags.

I've been riffling through my sewing bag and found a load of ribbons that will be great for wrapping the presents with. I found my button tin and they will be great for the cards I'm going to make with the kids. (Use the buttons as baubles or make a button wreath/tree).

TheOneWithTheHair · 19/11/2013 23:04

Thanks IsThatTrue, it's my first one and I was worried it was too simple.

You've been productive tonight. :)

SolidGold · 20/11/2013 19:49

Great thread Smile

I'm trying to make as many gifts as possible this year. I think I will knit fingerless gloves for the dc.

I'd like to take a nice photo of dd and frame it for MIL but last time I posted a photo frame to her it broke in the post, so I'm hesitant. I thought of sewing something padded, but am not very good at sewing.

Last year I made a little felt cushion for dd with blanket stitch round the edge and her name on in chain stitch and a ribbon flower sewn on at two corners. She loves it. Smile

lucysmam · 20/11/2013 20:23

Could you cross stitch something lovely SolidGold? and put that on a padded frame?

My candy canes are almost done, will have done six with two types of bead and six with two different ones when I buy my last lot of beads at the weekend.

Next job is snowflakes for the windows....I am stupidly excited to try those out Grin

(And I'm going to make each dd a pretend packet of baby wipes for their dollies...possibly nappies too if I cba to get my machine out - it doesn't like me much Sad , tends to break whenever I touch it but works fine for dp or his mam Confused )

SolidGold · 20/11/2013 20:40

Lucysmam, I'm not sure where I'd get a padded frame?

lucysmam · 20/11/2013 20:44

hmmmm, no idea off the top of my head....is there a Boyes or market near you? they're where I've been getting my bits.

Or maybe hobbycraft

lucysmam · 20/11/2013 20:52

Have googled and amazon-ed with no joy. I wonder if you could diy one somehow Confused
