So, dedicated bargain hunters, do you think its worth "investing" in a Playmobil advent calendar now or waiting until nearer the time (by which I mean Sept or Aug rather than Nov when presumably prices must rocket)?
I am already getting excited about how excited DD will be to have one!

Oreocrumbs · 01/07/2013 22:26

Murtette, I bought mine a few weeks ago, do you know how to use camelcamelcamel?

I bought it when it dropped to £8 odd. You can set a price alert for products so it emails you when items drop to your desired price.

You can also use it to see what the previous prices have been for all amazon products, so you know when something is a good price or not.

I started watching the advent calendars around the end of the summer hols last year and they didn't really drop below the £14 mark until Christmas, so I have bought mine early this year!

Murtette · 01/07/2013 22:43

No. But it sounds exactly what I need. I've just signed up for it. How does it actually work though? And any tips so I'm not bombarded with information all of the time?

Oreocrumbs · 01/07/2013 23:42

It is an amazon price tracker site.

Select the UK page and register (just email etc). Then just put a product into the search bar, e.g I put in playmobil advent calendar.

That takes you to a list of suitable products, just like amazon does. Select the one you are interested in and click on it. That will give you the page I linked to.

Have a look at the chart, you can select form amazon or 3rd party sellers, and see how the price has charted over the last few months.

If you can see it is, say £20 today, but the chart shows it drops to £10 at certain times, then you may decide not to buy it now but to wait, so you can track it at the top of the page. Just put in a price that you want and click track, when the item drops to or below your set price camel with email/tweet you.

You can do all kinds of other things, porting your wish list from amazon etc but I'm not that technical!

Also, on the home page it has info on what are the best % price drops in popular/your favourite categories. So sometimes you notice something at a good price and buy it, even if you don't need it Grin.

Someone posted about it on this thread last year and it is a great site. I started thinking about what sort of things I would probably like for my DD's birthday and Christmas (she is only 3 so still up to me!!) and tracked them in January.

I bought the calendar in May, and will buy things like playmobil, lego, sylvanian familes as and when they drop to a good price through out the year.

Oreocrumbs · 01/07/2013 23:44

Oh and it only emails you when you have an alert that you have to manually set, so no daily spamming!

blondieminx · 02/07/2013 00:24

Good lord I've blown a fortune on Amazon tonight thanks to this thread Blush

stocked up on various Playmobil bits, Thanks Thanks Thanks and also spotted that they have some Sylvanian Families discounts [[http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sylvanian-Families-Games-Gymnastics-Set/dp/B0062VCFPO/ref=sr_1_138?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1372720718&sr=1-138&keywords=sylvanian+families like this gymnastics set was £17.99 now £13.29). Although, I can't beleive they want a fiver for a teeny tiny plastic Sylvanian Families loo Hmm

DTismydoctor is it worth ringing customer services to see if any local stores are holding that item at all? Some retailers (thinking here of Debenhams) will do that for you as it's win-win - you get your item and are pleased they've gone the extra mile, they get your spend!

blondieminx · 02/07/2013 00:30
