dd3 has been unwell for almost 2 weeks now. she saw a GP last saturday who said she had a virus. we went on holiday to great yarmouth on monday, and came back today. she slept 12 hours a night, and then was sleeping during the day as well.

i am getting really concerned now, as this is not like dd3 at all. she usually polishes off 2 bowls of porriage in the morning, loads of lunch and demands food all day long as is hungry. now she is eating a couple of spoonfuls of food only.

i am also not sure, but think she may have a lump on her neck. at the front, not where you usually see glands up.

not sure whether to take her back to out of hours docs tomorrow, or childrens a+e.

she isnt vomiting, or having tummy troules. but is having random high temps, which come and go.

It sounds a bit like glandular fever to me .... did they do a blood test at the hosp as that would pick it up?

In adults if you have a lump in your neck isnt it something to do with thyroid? Think that makes u v tired but not sure if kids can get thyroid trouble

misdee, the symptoms you describe (lack of appetite, weight loss, excessively sleepy) can be signs of coeliac disease - I would ask GP about this if it recurrs

misdee · 23/05/2010 07:07

she is ill again. same thing. back off to out of hours today.

OP posts:
pantaloons · 23/05/2010 07:21

sorry to hear she is struggling again.

If it is any consolation DD1 who is 6 had a UTI and was poorly on and off for about 6 weeks. The initial infection was a really nasty one like you describe and we eventually paid private for a scan. It turned out that the infection was gone, but the UTI lining was damaged from the infection and "just needed time" to recover.
She is fine now, but it was a miserable fews weeks.

Having said that I think camping at the docs is the way to go when they are this little and feeling so unwell.

Let us know how you go on, and I hope she feels better soon.

misdee · 23/05/2010 07:41

as this will be classed as her second infection, they will organise a scan soon as well. dd1 had to had one done after her second infection. that will have to be arrnaged through the GP rather than out of hours though.

Aw misdee, poor DD . No advice really, just wanted to say I hope she is well soon and that you get some answers. Bumble was ill for over three weeks there and it was horrible.

misdee · 31/05/2010 17:41

well almost 6 weeks since her original onset of symptoms dd3 is no better. we went back to a+e oday with me in tears as i just dont know what to do anymore.

the good news is, that we finally have the correct antibiotics based on last weeks urine sample.

she will be referred for a kidney scan due to the risk of permanent damage as this has been going on so long

so 3rd lot of antio biotics, 3rd bottle of calpol. hopefully this will knock it on its head and dd3 can get better.

Just spotted this msdee. Poor dd.

My uncle used to do something in a lab ( no idea what!!) and my mum had a bad infection years ago and it took soca ages to clear it. Uncle reckoned it is vital to treat utis with specific ab for that infection rather than broad spectrum. I remember all this as uncle lived on our road and every month or so I used to have to take my mums sample up to him and he would take it for testing to make sure still clear! I hated doing it.

misdee · 31/05/2010 21:38

they had given her two anibiotics before which are usually used for UTI (trimeptrim? and amyoxcillin) but have given her augmentin this time based on last weeks test results which they managed to access (GP last week gave her the amoxcillin just in case).

am exhausted with it all. i cried in a+e as i just didnt know what else to do.

BudaisintheZONE · 31/05/2010 21:49

I amnot surprised youcried. You have seen enough hospitals to last a lifetime.

Hope this works. I think some people are just more prone to utis than others.

winnybella · 31/05/2010 21:55

How's her her gland, misdee? Has it gone down?

misdee · 31/05/2010 22:01

yes, thats all gone down. they gave her a full check up today, ears nose and throat just to make sure they werent missing anything else.

she had 3+ of leukozikes (sp?) in her urine but no nitrates or blood, which i think is a good thing.

am really worried about her still, as she is so drained and grouchey, which makes things hard for her. she is the sort of child if she is ill, then EVERYONE knows about iyswim. no-one is getting a break from it, and its very hard on the whole family.

OP posts:
winnybella · 31/05/2010 22:05

Did she have a blood test done?

misdee · 31/05/2010 22:07

no. i did debate internally about whether to push for one today, but am happy now if these anti biotics work. if they dont, and we are back in the same place in 2 weeks will be demanding blood tests and anything else.

OP posts:
winnybella · 31/05/2010 22:14

Ok, hope she'll be feeling better very soon. If not, make sure they do it.

misdee · 31/05/2010 22:24

oh i will.

felt bad today as am usually calm and it helps keep dd3 calm. but because i was upset she was really upset.

OP posts:
Rollmops · 01/06/2010 10:52

Did she have the complete blood works done? If not, request it immediately.
Hope she'll feel better soon, poor thing!

orangina · 01/06/2010 11:05

Sorry to hear about your dd misdee..... for what it's worth, dd had a run of UTIs for a while a few years ago, which totally knocked her out. no pain or stinging when she wee-ed, we only worked it out when she started wetting herself (normally trained and no accidents). First lot of ABs didn't work, so had to try something different and specific to her type of UTI.

as it's been going on so long, she will need a fair amount ot time to recover won't she? And yes, you are right to push for bloods etc the next time youj have to take her in.

Oh, and when dd was finally put on the RIGHT abs, she bounced back fairly quickly. But not unitl she was on the right ones.

Really hope she is better soon.

stealthsquiggle · 01/06/2010 11:10

Poor DD - that sounds so miserable - and 3 weeks is forever when you are 5.

I would continue with the crying in A&E strategy IIWY - at least in A&E they have to have a duty pediatrician which means you get to see someone who knows what they are talking about.

misdee · 02/06/2010 21:42

well fingers crossed, dd3 had a much better day today, and ismost back to normal. however as this has happened before, i am not uncrossing my fingers just yet. 2.5days left of anti biotics.

she is still saying her side hurts. towarsd the back where her kidneys are

then need to get a kidney scan done

OP posts:
Alouiseg · 02/06/2010 21:45

Please push for blood work to be done.
