Bleeding both ends

I am very lost on where to go. We are in A&E for the 3rd time in 2 weeks. On Monday DD who is 8 started to vomit coffee ground vomit, had an emergency endoscopy they found ulcers and started her on IV medicaion and admission for 3 days, went home, she had 2 days on a drip not able to eat or drink, was back on food and sent home. We lasted 48 hours at home she started vomting blood again back into hospital just spent time in a bed, had 2 bags of drips some tummy protector and anti sickness. Since then she has become so bloated. She was a child who hardly meets the weight scale for her age.

She is back in hospital tonight she is now bleeding from both ends. Her vomit has blood in it and her poo is just blood, she is just lifeless in bed she is not even moving when the doctors and nurses come to see her. She has never ever had bleeding from her bum. Google is scary

Sending strength OP, hope she’s much better very soon

Defrostedmariahcarey · 19/07/2026 23:25

Hi, how is she?
has she had blood tests, an ultrasound, xray? Does she have any swellings anywhere? Any other symptoms?
I ask as I’m a specialist paediatric nurse. Just trying to think of what I’d suggest if it were me

Can it just happen like this?

Yes, it can. Unusual in one so young but does happen. The good thing about IBD is that it is a condition which can be managed and given that they've asked the on call consultant to come in they're are taking it seriously.

Don't be afraid to ask people who they are and keep a note. It's very useful to have a small notebook for this purpose (you can use your phone of course but keeping it charged in a hospital isn't always easy).

Sliperzzzzz · 19/07/2026 23:44

I'm not a doctor but please do ask the actual doctors about the risk of sepsis, and ask for a second opinion if necessary.

Can you also ask who is the doctor who has primary responsibility for her care?

She is not very good! They have taken so much blood they have just put in a 2 more drips in her hands and elbows, they have just started giving her blood. We only came to a&e at 7pm. They did an ultrasound, her tummy is very swollen and bloated. We are waiting for a ct scan. She was fine up to 2 weeks ago this is all of a sudden happening. The doctors 2 weeks ago said it was stress related. Granda (my ffather in law) died last month and they were best of friends.

Stress doesn’t cause bleeding. If it was just her bottom I’d be worrying about haemorrhoids or considering constipation -one of mine had this and it looked dramatic but actually resolved once we worked out what was contributing to it. But both ends sounds more serious and she sounds quite unwell. I really hope you get some answers and she gets the right treatment.

Mischance · 19/07/2026 23:53

I am hoping that she is comfortably settled in a bed where she can rest. Poor little scrap.

I have a GD with Crohn's Disease and it was all very scary to start with and getting the right treatment was not speedy, but she is now on 3 monthly infusions and is doing fine.

I hope that they can make your little one comfortable while they get a diagnosis. She must be sick of all the needles.

Sending a hand hold.

I have ulcerative colitis and mine was started by stress and came on very fast and furious. Hopefully she’ll be seen by gastro and get the. Plans in motions. She’ll need a colonoscopy at least and then treatment dependant on what they find.

LoserWinner · 20/07/2026 00:08

Just a question - are you certain she hasn’t swallowed a button battery?

Franjipanl8r · 20/07/2026 00:15

Gosh how terrifying, sending lots of strength.

Boreded · 20/07/2026 00:21

Don’t google, there is no way this can help right now.

you guys are in the best place for her, they will sort this out. Sending well wishes

FlamingoFloss · 20/07/2026 00:23

Nothing helpful to add but sending love and strength x

Floppyearedlab · 20/07/2026 00:24

Poor poor child.
Was she otherwise healthy before this? Hope she gets some answers and gets better soon.

LadyGAgain · 20/07/2026 00:29

This is awful and sending you a lot of sympathy OP.
crohns disease is classic bleeding from mouth to anus. Has this been discussed? Wishing you well.

TheEarlofButties · 20/07/2026 00:31

Do you have someone with you in real life? Or is there someone you could call? You need to be strong for her but don’t be afraid to ask someone to be there for you.

Sliperzzzzz · 20/07/2026 07:16

How's she doing this morning op? Wishing you both well

Antihistamine62 · 20/07/2026 07:55

Hope she had a settled night and feeling a bit better after her blood ❤️ Hope you managed a sleep too OP!
the gastro consultant will hopefully come see her today if they’ve not already and you can get a concrete plan in action x

RecyclingSal · 20/07/2026 09:50

Oh bless her little heart. Sending you love and strength 💐

AllLeft · 20/07/2026 11:14

They took her to surgery earlier this morning she is not out yet. They said they really don't know where the bleeding is coming from till they go in with the camera. Watching the clock waiting is horrid. The last update was she should be back soon at 1130

OP posts:
stayathomegardener · 20/07/2026 11:16

Thinking of you both.

Mulledjuice · 20/07/2026 11:17

Sending best wishes. The waiting is so hard.

Nephro · 20/07/2026 11:33

Thinking of you all.

Ilovesshopping · 20/07/2026 11:39

It sound like it could be an ulcer with those symptoms. Did they test for h. Pylori?
Hope she’s ok and you get answers soon.

Mischance · 20/07/2026 11:42

Waiting with you with a hand hold.
